Was :Oh Keysight! Now: HP82357B with KE5FX

Reading the thread, have experienced similar problems. Have several 82357B from HP, have installed drivers, etc, can use the Keysight S/W to talk to them and do simple things over the 488 bus like set RF switches, etc. However, for the life of me I cannot get Johns (KE5FX) s/w to work with them!?

I know Johns stuff works well, one of my students uses it in my lab with his own Prologix adapter, running my gear.
I cannot figure out how to make it work with the HP USB to 488 unit.? I have limited time and skills on the job to play with it so it has been a back burner item but would like to get it going.
Has anyone had success with this? Any suggestions?
Also: Really like RMB but have only old copies of Transera HTB for DOS. I am afraid if I bring one of my 9826's in to run the gear, the students will go into convulsions laughing at it!
Really miss using the '26, so simple to talk to the gear.
I still like BASIC because of its simplicity and relative ruggedness/stability (and also I am an old guy..). Would really like to have a modern solution that would run on a laptop and control my gear...
I know someone has figured this all out. If only I could get to that person...

Thanks!

TILT!? As others have hinted, prologix.exe is from KE5FX, not
Keysight.? It should not be running, and no wonder it barfs if you try
to use it with an HP 82357B.

It's probably time to uninstall everything and start over.

Hi Jeff,

I am pretty sure that John only supports Prologix and NI for his
various 488 utilities.

Why not just buy a Prologix adapter? As you already know, they
work very well, and are certainly affordable.

As to your old DOS copies of RMB, and Transera, they should run
very well on a Linux DosBox. Or the equivalent for Windows.

... Unless they are locked with a dongle, or some silly copy
protection.

I have been using DosBox to run my old DOS utilities for years.
The only time there is a problem is if the DOS utility needs to
get too close to the hardware... stuff like EPROM programmers that
use DOS to do the pulse timing are never going to work.

The latest version of the Keysight IO Libraries Suite is terminally broken
for the 488.2 APIs even though this code should have been stable for
decades.

Hi Jeff,
I've run an HP 82357A with KE5FX's software and I think the only change was this one:

* Open Connection Expert
* Go into Settings (gear icon at top right of screen)?
* Click on Keysight 488 GPIB Options
* Tick Enable Keysight GPIB cards for 488 programs

(Note that my install of the Keysight IO software is probably a year or two out of date. It has a version of 18.1.22924.2 in Settings | About Connection Expert)

There is also a place where you can switch between the VISA implementations that you have installed - i.e. Keysight or National Instruments - which I have set to Keysight.
Can't find that setting right now though.

Cheers,
Roger

Greetings,

?

??? I use John's software and the HP 82357b with:

?? ??????8753d, 8568b, 8566b, and E4406a.?

???

??? System:

?? ??????HP Z-440 with Windoze 7, 64b

??? ?????Keysight Connection Expert installed from Keysight_Instrument_Control_Bundle_6.2015.exe

?

?? ??????I use MATLAB extensively and the 82357b works fine with all manner of GPIB instruments. ?

??

???????? Finally, I picked up 2 of the 82357b's from eBay a few years ago for about $100 a piece.

???????? Can't say if they are counterfeit or not, all I know is they work very well.?

Further to my earlier post, the way to choose VISA implementations?is to:

* Open Connection Expert
* Click on the gear icon in the top right corner
* Select Tools | VISA Conflict Manager
* Select General VISA settings

In there you can choose the VISA COM implementation. I have NI and Keysight VISA installed, but only Keysight is set to Enabled in that screen.

Cheers,
Roger
