Anybody have schematics or link for schematics of HP 3488A switch control unit?

Tim hughes

Keysight website only has operator manuals and similarly BAMA has operator/programming manuals like 03488-90002 or 3 etc.

The manual numbered? 03488-90009 is supposed to be the repair manual. But I could not find a free download.??
From the title it sounds more like a block level repair manual. But it does have some sort of schematics.?

I am only really interested in schematics particularly the power supplies.

Any help appreciated.

I did some more searching and found this website which has a bit of information on the switch mode power supply and lots of pictures:

Hi Tim,
I have this document ; HP-3488A-90012 3488A Service manual
I downloaded that from the Agilent website .
I do not know if it is still available there.

Look for it and if you do not find it I am happy to upload it to KO4BB.

A number of now have people sent me copies of 90012nservice manual,? thanks for? all replies on and off list!

The manual is actually on the Agilent keysight website, but it does no come up if you do an official search on the sight. It appears they took the link down, but it is still on the site and the link can be found via a general google seach.

This was from Nigel GM8PZR :

Keysight does have the service manual, the one you need is 03488-90012, but for some reason it doesn't seem to show in their document list for the product, although a google search on "HP3488A service manual" does find it.
Another link :

Thanks again.

I have two of these units and downloaded the manuals direct from the Keysight site.

This includes the schematics for the main unit and the various switch cards.

These are useful bits of kit
Good luck with yours.

The psu is a module which is likely to have been a 3rd party module so schematics?
may not be available.

George,

Nice work. I still have a few, one of my sons used a couple for a High School project with a 3456A to plot the discharge curves of several different types of cells.?

These are a great bargain right now.?

Hi George,

Congratulations on a nicely executed design. I love it... simple to use and straightforward to fix.

As i said,i have two chassis with various switch or i/o cards in each.

What i don't have for 3 of the relay cards is the rear plate and connector plus its associated cable clamp. Do you have any of these? Mainly required for the 44470A relay cards. If you have any to spare and can ship to UK for not too expensive the i could be interested.

Great bits of kit though, well done.
Regards
Nigel

Nigel,
I will see what I can do.? The same connector blocks were used on the HP3421A portable data acquisition unit so look out for those.? Unfortunately when you purchase cards, the connector blocks and housing are missing.? Best to look for completed units with cards stuffed into them that have the external cables cut at the blocks.

There is a chance I will be in the UK within the next 20 days on business.? If that goes thru and I find spares I will bring them along.? Will be flying into Heathrow.

Some people earlier were looking for floppy drives for the 9122/9133 series of disc drives.? If there is a need in the UK, I could drag some of those along with me.? ?Let me know and we can work out a price for the units.

George

Brilliant George,

Sounds good and if you have a small amount of time during the visit we can potentially meet up. I am only in Stevenage/Luton area (approx 30 miles north of London... simples.

Understood about the back connectors as any unit taken from a rack either had the rear panel plate removed or the cable cut...

Useful to know about the 3421A... i didn't know that.

Nigel

Yes and thanks guys, the 3488A is a very robust instrument - virtually indestructible.? Never was an I/O card ever sent back for warranty repair or for out of specification replacement.? Those Aromat relays were well qualified and life tested with plenty of margin.? Nothing in the specs was ever cut close -- everything I speced was for 3-sigma uncertainty and guaranteed to work in a class B environment.? Never did a card ever fail final test for being out of spec.---? the design of the circuits will work with components at the extreme ends of the selection bin of typical manufacturing variations.

Not sure how many main frames were finally produced but probably in the 50K range.? They were very popular for use in manufacturing test systems.? We were told the big users like Motorola would describe their test systems by how many 3488a frames would be required.? We talked about making an expander to give users more I/O slots but told by the users it was not necessary because the units were cheap enough as is and they would just purchase multiple units if needing more slots so an expander was never seriously considered.? It is indeed amusing the industry rated test systems by how many 3488As would be required.

It has now been replaced by the 3499 and 34970A data acquisition unit.
