HP 70004A with Video DRAM error

Hello all 70000 users,

I am the luckey new owner of a really clean 70004A that is throwing a video dram error. Does anyone know how to narrow down where this fault could be coming from? There are 16 Drams all hanging on the data bus(s) (dual port ram) so it is hard to determine if it is one chip causing the issue. All the other tests pass fine so I think the busses are ok. Acording to the service manual, on power up it write to then reads a bit pattern to all the memoy locations.

?

Any ideas? I looked at all the pins on all the rams and do not see any stuck logic levels.

?

Does anyone have a good A5 board as that is the service manual recommendation for this fault.

?

?

Regards,

Tom

I can't offer any suggestions for this, but please keep any info about
this on this mailing list. My 70004A does this as well, but only about
one out of every four power-ups. I hit the key indicated by the arrow,
the video test pattern blows by, then it comes up normally and is perfect.

Hi Dave,
?
I also see a strange?pattern blow by when it is going through? the test. Tonight I will make a short video of the process and you can compare it to what yours does.
?
I did pick up some new DRAM from American Microsemi for a good price. The part number is M5M4C264AL-12 fyi.
?
?
Thanks for replying,
Tom

Ok, sounds good. I'm pretty sure that's just the memory test pattern,
likely nothing to worry about...it just happens to make it out to the
CRT while the CPU is checking for retention.

Ahh ok, I will make a note of that...Thanks!

Follow up-

?

I replaced all 16 DRAM chips but no joy. Has the same problem.

?

So plan B,

I scored a replacement A5 board on ebay for reasonable money and now the unit is working fine. Now to start collecting modules :).

?

Regards,

Tom

That sucks. I wonder what's up with that board.

Great! What's the part number of that board? I may take the same
route. Mine is still working great, but every few power-ups I get the
same error you were getting.

Hi Dave,
?
The board I got was a 70004-60043 with '93 version firmware. I installed the '07 chips from the bad board and all worked. I am now waiting on a 70001A I got for $70 + shipping. Now I just need to make up the MSIB cable to stack them up.

Don't forget, you will need two of the interconnect cables. It's a loop. And not immediately apparent that you need two. At least it wasn't to me.?

Yeah, the code for that diagnostic is SOL. ;-)

Let's see:

pre-existing condition, but that is fine.

your insurance is 1000/month, with a 10,000 deductable.

The good news is that it's covered, but your only in-network repair
station is somewhere in North Dakota (which is a bit far frm where *I*
am).

LOL. You guys are a hoot!. Thanks for the laughs, I needed that. My 70001A should be here today.
?
Can anyone email me the pdf from the 70000 group files area that covers the MSIB cable details? Neocrap will not let me download any files from the groups.
?
Thanks and regards,
Tom

I recently encountered an “A5 graphics DRAM error” on my 70004 display and while web searching came across this thread.? Initially my inclination was to try replacing the 16 VDRAMs on the A5 processor board but seeing the original posters lack of success I decided to do a bit more debugging.? The service manual, 70004-90046, on page 4-43 describes the procedure to test each DRAM type.? When running these tests I found that the GSP VRAM of which there are 16 was fine but the GSP DRAM test showed an error on bit 4.

Consulting the 70004 CLIP showed bit 4 to be on U102, after replacing this 64kx4 DRAM my 70004 display is now working fine.? I hope this might help someone else.

I had exactly the same problem on my 70004A, using the same procedure to fix the issue i had to replace one defective D41464C (in my case U103).
Don't loose time to look the VRAM section because their failure will generate different error (VRAM error), the infamous A5 graphics DRAM error will come only from issues in the DRAM section (U101-U104).
Just few days ago i was really surprised because after about one year i got the same error again, then i decided to replace the other three chips and now the unit work fine.
Looking at the numbers of failure from different users and my experience with two failures in a relatively short time seems that this series of memory (made by NEC in my unit) it is very prone to fail due to their age.
