Other things to consider in owning either of theses scopes
I have a love-hate relationship with my (2) 54111D's On the love side... 1)They are very easy to use, the menus are well thought out and largely intuitive. a very felxible scope 2) The large color screen is a joy to use 3) They do lots of cool stuff 4) for what you get they are very cheap on Ebay even at $500+ On the hate side.... 1) THEY ARE HEAVY...About 50lbs 2) THEY ARE BIG .. 19" wide...24" deep 3) They are for the most part not repairable at the componenet level even if the service manual covered that which it doesn't. Spare boards and input amps are next to impossible to come by. 开云体育Hello Dave,How about this for a coincidence: I just purchased the 54111D manual on CD from you at eBay. I figured I'd look the manuals over before I made a decision. Thanks for your input. I was looking into the Tek 11403 which also has a color display but is is much slower. The Tek suffers from the same problem as the 54111D, namely that it cannot be serviced since the schematics were never published. Question: I have a 8660C Signal generator which sounds like a steam train when I power it up. How is the noise level of the 54111D? I see that it has two big fans in the back. 73, George H, N2FGX nr1dx@... wrote: Other things to consider in owning either of theses scopes |

You definitely know the fan is on ..... It is definitely noiser than a tek 7904 , 496 or a 2200 series... not what I would call objectional per se but far from silent. I think HP in general likes to move more air than Tek. Of my two 54111D's one is slightly more noisy than the other. I also have a big rack mount HP 6.5 digit precision DVM ( I forget the number) which makes more noise than the 54111D by 2x sounds like a jet engine winding up. Will get that 54111D CD out to you right away... 开云体育Dave,Sometimes when I fire up all my equipment, I wish I had a pair of those hearing protectors that construction workers use. The whiniest (if such a word) of my equipment is definitely the HP 5370A counter and it's brother the 5370B. But the loudest is the 8660C. Once I had to repair the 8660C, and I went deaf before I was through. Now, add to that the AC unit that keeps the room cool, and you can imagine what it sounds like in here. One weird thing happened lately was I purchased a Systron Donner Time code reader/generator (IRIG-B) and it had a faulty PS. Well, It was nothing more that a blown cap, but when I fixed it I realized that is was using a switched PS for the +12V. The design of the PS made it whine like crazy around 12KHz (or so). It is sooo annoying! Anyway, Paypal just informed me that it will be sending you the amount for the CD. Many thanks for your comments, -George nr1dx@... wrote: George |
