HP 3589A Spectrum / Network Analyzer: Trace Math syntax

martin_u_fischer

Hello HP Community,

I am looking for informations about Trace Math in the HP 3589A
Spectrum / Network Analyzer.
The Product Data Sheet merely mentions some characteristics of this
feature.
The HP 3589A Operator?s Guide downloaded the from the Agilent website
doesn?t even mention this feature.

Does anybody have any further informations about Trace Math syntax in
this Model?
Or do I miss a dedicated manual covering this topic?

Any hint will be highly appreciated.

Regards
Martin

I was the OP and was able to repair the scope. It
turned out to be nothing more than a bad battery. I
think that the CMOS data was corrupted, leading to the
failure to continue the self-test. It turned out that
the battery is soldered to the board under the rear
frame, and is not easy to access even if you could
find a replacement (3V lithium). I clipped it out and
shorted the terminals on the PCB for a minute to
ensure that the CMOS was completely discharged. Then I
wired in a 2 AA cell battery holder and put in a
couple of alkaline batteries. You may have a more
elegant solution, but this works just fine if you are
OK with changing the cells every few years.

After putting the scope back together it started up
right away. This is a good time to install new
firmware, just now available on the Agilent web site.
In either case you will need to go through the
calibration procedure which is easy to do. You need
three BNC Tees and five BNC-BNC cables at least 18"
long. Four of the cables need to be the same length.
The scope will lead you through the calibration
procedure. Be sure to let it warm up for one hour with
the cover fully installed before calibrating, or you
can get errors and a bad cal.

Hi Group,

I've got a 54540A in need of repair. This is a 4
channel 500 MHz digitizing scope of the generation
before Infinium. When first turned on it appears that
nothing happens. But it is alive to the degree that it
recognizes if you hold down a key during power-up,
which is the signal to prompt for a firmware update.
In this case a prompt appears on the CRT, and you need
to confirm with another keypress if you really want to
read in new firmware. If I press another key (even
though I don't have a new disk for it), then it
appears to go dead again.

I have checked all the power supply voltages and found
everything in order. My theory is that some part is
failing the power up self test early in the sequence,
and it is not able to display an error message at that
time. HP service consisted of exchanging keyboard or
main board assemblies, which would be determined by
swapping in a known good one. A replacement assembly
would probably be too expensive even if they had one
available.

Before I write this off ... does anyone know how to
access any further diagnostc info, or if there are any
specific things that I could check and possibly repair
to fix this ?

Tracking Generator with HP-8922M GSM Test Set

Hi to all,
I've just purchased an used HP-8922M GSM Test Set. It works fine and
I'm going to use it for HAM homebrewing.
It has a lot of features but I wonder if it possible to use it to plot
a filter response or the VSWR vs. frequency on a DUT such as could be
an antenna. I saw the possibility to program the instrument using
IBASIC features but I really don't have any clue on how :-((
Does anyone have experienced something similar?? Thanks for any help.

Re: WTB - Parts For 339A and 334A Distortion Analyzers

Hi Mike,

Sorry I can't help with the parts you need, but was wondering if I
could benefit from any experience you might have with the 334A. I am
putting a recent eBay purchase back into shape and have noted that
the Meter Range switch seems to have intermittant contacts. I
suspect corrosion or foreign matter on the contacts, but the service
manual warns so strongly against contamination of the "very high
impedence, high frequency circuits" that I am a little wary of using
Deoxit on the contacts. Any ideas how I could go about cleaning the
contacts on this multisection rotary switch?

Your comments or those of group members would be greatly appreciated.

All the best,

Mitch

Hi,

I recently traded for a 339A, which has several issues. The input
jack is broken and needs to be replaced. It's one of the gray
binding
posts with the red ring around the hole, which were common in HP
gear
of the Eighties. If anyone out there has a "parts" 339A, I could
also
use new (well better, anyway) knobs for the frequency multiplier,
distortion range, and oscillator level controls. Most of the
printed
legends are gone from the knob skirts on mine.

I also have a 334A distortion analyzer which is complete except for
the power supply board. The power supply board number is 0333-
66501.

If anyone can help me out with the jack, and/or the P/S board,
and/or
the knobs, please contact me offline.

Thanks (as always),

Re: 7" Rackmount flanges available?

I suppose Yahoo could be docked some of the money they
get paid to host the group? Oh, wait, they do it for
FREE!
No. They get paid tons of money for advertising on their "free" services.

Would it be a stretch to complain about a FREE
service??!
Why not? Their free service has driven out a lot of non-free competitors, so
if they don't keep up their promise, you have every reason to get angry. It's
called bait and switch, you know.

Cheers, Kuba

Re: 7" Rackmount flanges available?

Hi Dave,

Can you let me know the hole spacing where the flanges
would attach to the unit. I have boxes of various
flanges. Do you want them with or w/o handles?

Jim

Non-standard HP 8660A - circuit sought

Hi All,
I have an 8660A (Serial prefix 1638A) with a non-listed option giving
an upper frequency limit of 160MHz (with 86601A RF section) instead of
the 110MHz of the standard instrument. I have the OP & S manual but it
does not list this option.
My problem is in the DAC section of the A4A6 Pretune module (assy 08660-
60156) which is 15bit rather than 10bit (08660-60007). I cannot get the
whole range to lock in. I know that at least one resistor is 'high'
but, without extracting the board and tracing the circuit, I can't do
much more.
This is a bit of a long shot but if anyone has the circuit and set-up
info it would be gratefully received and save me a lot of work!
Thanks in anticipation,
Martin

I know that we are here to discuss HP stuff, but I wanted to ask if
anyone knew of a similar group for vintage semiconductor parts.

I'm fixing a fine old Tektronix DC503 counter and need one of these
Motorola MC4035P quad latches (it is TTL and not the same thing as a
CD4035 or a MMC4035 or a 14035).

Does anyone have one of these, or suggest where I might find one?

I'd buy another DC503 on EBay for parts, but I have a bad habit of
wanting to fix all the fine old Tek and HP stuff that I buy on EBay
for parts!

The online hits I get seem to claim that some are available, but the
online suppliers have minimum orders of hundreds of dollars.

Thanks in advance,

George Plhak in Acton, Ontario, Canada

Re: New Price: $1495 for Color TFT Retrofit Kit for HP 8566B, 8568B

Hi
well he hasn't lower it a bit... It uses just a trick to grab
attention. He listed it with the core price which was always &1495. But
if you read at the listing desciption he clearly states that you should
either send him a display bezel or pay an extra $325 for getting the
kit first, and then, if you like, send im back the one you will
disassemble from 85662 unit, and then he will refund the $325 back to
you...
That was always the proposed way, and price... NO DISCOUNT at all, just
an "eyecatch trick".
Don't know if have sales of it, but according to his Ebay feedback I'm
watching some time now, he has done only 1 sale of it at that price,
after all these repeated listings of it!
My wild guess is that by "breaking" the price of it for real, will give
him a lot of sales almost rigt away... But of course when people here
find it good for its price, will hold it there, even if the sales
doesn't seem to follow the positive comments on that target price level!

Sotiris

New Price: $1495 for Color TFT Retrofit Kit for HP 8566B, 8568B

There was a discussion about this item recently on the Group. It
