Re: 8568B fan replacement

It also makes pretty darn good emergency gasket material for flanges in water systems. Some of that and a Leatherman and you're back in service in minutes.

I like the vice idea too.

When my 8590a powers up, the screen shows many moving spikes

sensitivity is extremely high and the spikes represent
noise.? If I do CAL->CORRECT->OFF, the screen
shows the expected spectrum with the internal 299.9Hz
calibration signal connected to the input.? It passes
both frequency and amplitude CAL tests but fails the
confidence test on, as far as I can see, every one of the

CORRECT causes the analyzer to act normally, although I
haven't carefully checked amplitude and frequency

I've searched this forum and elsewhere and have come up

I would too - in fact I have unlimited disk space. I thought the Wiki used by Wikipedia would be best, but shell access is highly recommended.

For me to "upgrade" to a virtual private server, the cost would be minimal for 25 GB storage, but it starts getting quite expensive for large storage capacities, whereas currently I have no limit on storage. for a bit less than a virtual server.

At one point I had a fixed IP address, and so run my own server. I? never had a Wiki, but have had a forum and a place where people can upload documents. Both can be a pain in terms of the time you spend sorting out the spammers. People were forever uploading files that were root kits. The odd thing was, the server run Solaris on a SPARC processor, but all the root kits were for Linux or Windows. So needles to say nobody ever hacked it, but I know from an admin perspective, these sort of things can take a lot of time.

Re: 8568B fan replacement

I find fan noise annoying, so I replace 5" fans with quiet 3" or 4" 12 Vdc fans mounted in a flat sheet of rubber (like car inner tube). Most equipment has a convenient supply. I've even run a 12V fan from the raw dc supply going to the 5V regulator. The rubber sheet acts as a good vibration isolator as well as a airtight seal. Just make sure that the cf/m rating is high enough.

If I do CAL->CORRECT->OFF, the screen shows the expected spectrum with the internal 299.9Hz calibration signal connected to the input.? It passes both frequency and amplitude CAL tests but fails the confidence test on, as far as I can see, every one of the many steps.? If I attempt to store and later fetch the CAL data, I get the moving spikes; as before, turning off CORRECT causes the analyzer to act normally, although I haven't carefully checked amplitude and frequency accuracy of the display under this uncorrected condition.

I've searched this forum and elsewhere and have come up dry.? Any ideas?

Thanks,

Christopher Kuni?

If I had to take a guess, I would take a look at the power supply rails. Check the levels and look for ripple with a scope.?This unit uses a switching power supply and there is a real good chance you have a bad filter capacitor on one or more?of the low voltage supplies. Pull the supply out and look at the output filter caps to see if any are bulging or leaking.
?
As far as I know, there are no schematics of the supply as it was sourced outside of HP. I have seen replacement supplies (that require slight modification) sometimes on ebay or other sources. Maybe you will get lucky and just need to replace a few caps.

Hello all--first posting.?

When my 8590a powers up, the screen shows many moving spikes that extend the entire vertical height of the screen, as if sensitivity is extremely high and the spikes represent noise.? If I do CAL->CORRECT->OFF, the screen shows the expected spectrum with the internal 299.9Hz calibration signal connected to the input.? It passes both frequency and amplitude CAL tests but fails the confidence test on, as far as I can see, every one of the many steps.? 8568B fan replacement

I was recently gifted a 8568B (missing interconnect cables unfortunately, so if anyone has a surplus set let me know as I'd like to run this on another bench from my 8566B which has cables).

The RF section has a tag marked with "damaged fan."

The markings on the fan are very faded and unreadable. It is an IMC Boxer fan which, even after I oiled it, will not run properly. It's an odd one, the shroud is part of the instrument and the fan is a "spider" mount with motor and blades. The spider arms are mounted to rubber vibration isolators, two of which are broken. The others are close to failing.

Has anyone found a replacement? I'd prefer a new fan and isolators but perhaps someone has had luck with something standard as a replacement and willing to share their findings? It's a 115 VAC 50/60 Hz motor.

Internally it's a little dusty but otherwise looks pretty good.
