Good idea. One cannot trust the files area of the Yahoo group to be
there forever. One would need to make sure that the wiki cannot be
easily lost so a backup on another site would be needed.

Re: What is this used for?

Dave Schmidt

Well, looking through the user manual and whatnot... I have no use for this unless I can come up with a pile of thermocouples so I can monitor and automate the various stages of cooling I have for my server rack / room.? IE, no fans / fan on low / fan on high / furnace air recirculation / large external vent fan / vent shutters / Air Conditioner / Dehumidifier/ hard reset of individual outlets.... etc etc etc

I don't know.... walking into my basement and flipping switches works just fine for me also ....

Decisions decisions .... do I keep it simple and flip switches, selling the whole HP 34970a system to someone who could put it to better use.... ?or go complicated, get more grey hair working out the bugs and coding.....

I kinda am a firm believer of KISS .... keep it simple stupid ... if anyone can use it, shoot me an offer, help make my mind up for me with a few $.?

Hello--

WOW!... from your description, what you have there is an extremely
versatile
test and measurement system with a great selection of bells and
whistles. Read over
the spec sheets and app notes Keysight publishes and use your imagination!
The system can interface with a PC for program control and data analysis,
and that opens a lot of possibilities.

If you have a budding scientist/engineer in your household, he or she could
use the system to make a truly impressive science-fair project. If your
local school has
a really good science teacher who is active in national science-fair
competition
and is engaged in STEM education, consider a donation if the teacher is
interested and excited by the possibilities. The system is too useful to
scrap or part out-- if nothing else, you could make a sophisticated
home-security system using the hardware and software

Or how about using the system to monitor voltages and currents in a
system that has
an intermittent fault? Log voltages at several points in a system and
see which one goes away first.

Having spent some years writing about electronic test instruments and
applications,
I have a pretty good idea of what one could accomplish with this equipment.

My E4432A doesn't have any out put from the synthesizer board at all on any frequency. The 10 meg. from the time base is there but that is all I found so far. I do have a clip for my E4411B that I not using and thought I might donate it to a site for the group. It is two large note books. Jerry

Re: E4432A

Hi Jerry,

What are the symptoms?

I believe there is a service note about the frac-n chip in the synthesizer. I am not sure if that applies to the A model or the B model. If I find a copy I will send it to you.

If you find a CLIP I could certainly use a copy too. It is rumored to exist but I have never seen one.

54622D power supply failures

I have two 54622D scopes with failed power supplies with. The obvious component failures on both are the transformer drive transistor (IGBT), the current sense resistor, the gate drive resistor, and a resistor that feeds the PWM startup circuit.?

The smoked startup resistor concerns me the most as it implies there are more failed components in the PWM controller section. I can't find a schematic so I was wondering if anyone here has successfully repaired one of these supplies and can tell me what other parts needed to be replaced.

Thanks,

Walt?

Barry,

HP had a series of instrument carts where there was the ability to attach the
instrument directly to the card via side attachments. The attachment
allowed the instrument to be tilted up and down for ease of viewing. You
can see this arrangement in a pdf from the HP Memory Project on page 30.

This document also is handy in identifying the myriad of plug-ins for these
instruments.

Re: Dismantling HP 141T Display Section

Hi Steve,

I would not recommend to dismantle a CRT unit. You will need more space
to store everything with a good packaging material, then the unit needs
alone ?!

Only ma opinion !

I have repaired a lot of HP equipment and usually start by dismantling
to assembly level to clean everything up and inspect for any obvious
problems. Normally an easy process, just take lots of photos and notes,
occasionally have to desolder a wire or two, then reassembly.

Not so with the 141T, this must have been a nightmare to manufacture!
Complicated wiring looms and lots of individual pin contacts to the
pcb's. Must have been a design throwback to valve (vacuum tube)
technology and metal chassis. Cableforms pass through holes in metal
panels, so impossible to remove. Some parts riveted on instead of
screwed. Usual problem of connectors on front of panel with wiring
behind, so again can't be removed. I don't want to cut the cableforms,
so maybe will cut the panels instead. Anybody know if the contacts can
be removed from the special D-type connectors?

I will post the spare parts on my website when finished this complicated
little project.

Question about side handle for a 140B scope

The side handle holes on my 140B have a plate installed that looks like this:

Can someone tell me what that plate's intended purpose is? I think the standard side handles that went with that scope had a plate similar to the ones for gear like an 8640B, etc.; however, the plates from an 8640B don't fit this hole (the handles may be the same but the plates are different).

Are the plates shown in the picture for some kind of bail or other stand in lieu of a handle?

Thanks,

Start it off with model number listing, and the basic descriptions. Then let people submit their specific knowledge of individual models. It would reduce the repetitious questions where people are unable or unwilling to search the archives for useful information.

What do the other members of the group think about this idea?
