Reliability of FieldFox portable VNAs, SAs and combination analyzers
Dr. David Kirkby from Kirkby Microwave Ltd
Some years ago I bought a CertiPrime N9923A from Agilent. It developed a hardware fault within a month or so.
Sometime later, someone I know bought an N9912A combination analyzer. I checked that for him. The performance was poor as a VNA, (dynamic range is typically 49 dB at 5-6 GHz), but I understand the N9912A is only for basic measurements. But the instrument worked okay. Then, despite me knowing that the N9912A is not a good VNA, I got the chance to pick one up cheap and bought it. That was dead on arrival.
A week or so ago I was talking to a customer of mine, who said he had heard reports from several sources about poor reliability of FieldFox instruments I'm just wondering if others have experienced this problem. I guess it is going to be hard to get any hard facts about this, as I doubt Keysight will be publishing MTBF data.
Having handled a couple of N9912As (SA+VNA), and one N9923A (VNA), I'm impressed with the build quality. But now I am starting to wonder how relieable these instruments are. They might be quite risky used purchases.

Re: Machinable Potting Material ???
If you have a drill press, you can chuck a threaded screw and drill the tap hole for 4-40 by feeding the quill onto a drill bit held stationary in a chuck.? I used this technique to salvage an $85 air valve on a Toyota Tercel.
I'd broken a plastic teet off taking it off.? So I drilled the proper size hole in a length of a #10-24 screw, shaped the end with a file in the drill press, took it out.? I don't recall now if I used a tap or? cut a groove? to tap the plastic and.? I put epoxy on the threads and screwed it.? It worked like a charm.
The principle here is that a rotating workpiece will cause the drill to follow the center of rotation.?
You can see the setup I used here:
It didn't aign as well as needed for the differential screw, but for your purpose it would be fine.

I inadvertently sent the previous message before finish compiling it.? What happens next 1) Please stop posting here. If you require immediate support, join /g/HP-Agilent-Keysight-equipment now. The instructions and description of the group are there. If you don't require immediate support, then just wait and should hopefully get subscribed automatically. I say hopefully because a message from says ======== IMPORTANT: Yahoo Groups has been very unreliable lately. We will do our very best, but there is a good chance that we may not be able to transfer all of your messages, photos or files. We will tell you which ones we were not able to transfer. Also, the migration queue is several days long at this point. Please be patient as we work through the backlog of tranfer requests. ======== 2) I will wait until at least 21:00 GMT on Sunday, August 19th before bouncing messages on the HP/Agilent Yahoo group. If messages are still coming in, due to delays in the mail system, I might leave it as late as 09:00 GMT on Monday 20th August before bouncing messages.
3) The following messages will probably be deleted, on Yahoo,
as the author does not want them transferred. I'm trying to negotiate a possible solution to this, but those might be deleted, so read them now if you want them. There's not a huge amount of information.
4) I will start the copying of data from Yahoo to . With the exception of those messages listed above, everything will hopefully be copied over, but I can't guarantee that. The message I received today from says the following

How about these? Thread one onto the end of a long 4-40 screw, heat it and push it into a pre-drilled hole? Once the plastic cools, it shouldn't be able to move.

Re: Bit of the ordinary: command ref for old GC
See off-list mail. -Dave On 08/17/2018 06:16 PM, Paul Amaranth paul@... [hp_agilent_equipment] wrote: Here's something a little out of the ordinary for this group.
I'm trying to track down any information on the serial and/or gpib commands for a late 80's HP 5980a gas chromatograph. Normally, there would be an associated programming manual or the codes would be listed in the reference manual. Not this time.
Through much wailing and gnashing of keyboards I have managed to track down a list of 2 letter serial commands from a NI website and through the wayback machine a description of an open source python program from hellonull.com called 5890 Remote Panel. Unfortunately the program itself was not archived and the site seems to be offline now. I did find some text describing the general format of the commands on that site in the wayback machine.
The site also had a reference to the HP/Agilent document 19242-90120 which describes a GPIB/RS232 interface card for the instrument (and presumably the command set). That document does not seem to exist on the Agilent site or anywhere, really.
Bonus if anyone knows what the HPIL command codes look like or even if they are the same as the serial commands. The instrument I have has the HPIL interface right now. I really do not want to pay more for a GPIB/RS232 board than I paid for the instrument though, so we'll see what I end up with.
There is a usb/HPIL translator floating around although it's PIC based.
Given the cost of HPIL cables, or even the parts if you want to make up your own, the serial route may be best.
There are a couple of purported drivers for the 5890, but no source that could be used to extract the command set that I can find.
I probably have enough hints to make some progress, but if anyone has any info or pointers I'd much appreciate it
The ultimate goal here is to cobble together a gc-ms for drinking water analysis for the rural area that I live. I was looking for a full instrument set, but I stumbled across this gc at my local university surplus store and it looked in really nice condition, which is a rarity and, even better, it was cheap.
Still looking for the mass-spec part.
thanks

There was a 2001 catalog and none that I have seen in 2002. For 2005 I have seen only a system and bench equipment catalog, and for 2006/2007 I have seen only an RF and microwave test accessories catalog. I have made no effort to collect catalogs from this century as I am an HP collector and not an Agilent or Keysight collector.

Hi Tam,
?
I have Filezilla which can do FTP and if you would like to specify how to grab the ISO¡¯s I will willingly put the files onto somewhere.
I suspect the CD¡¯s images in total will be less than 2GB.
?
Paul Bicknell has requested the CD¡¯s so I may eventually pass the originals to him.
?
I have enough material for Marconi Instruments information to fill up my space than have to store HP data as well (which I love by the way).

Nigel,
do you have an FTP client and know how to pull an ISO image?
?
I pay my ISP so much money that I will GLADLY let you use a few GB of storage.

Hi Paul,

Problem is the size ¨C mail limit is approx. 10-12MB here so never going to be
able to put a CD sized amount of info in a mail.

Hi Nigel
?
I would dearly like access to them but I think a lot of others would also like them also
So putting them on the group seams the best solution but if you have time I would be gratefully if you could send them to me as attachments
Regards Paul B? UK
Hi Paul,
I¡¯m actually happy to pass them on to someone else¡¯s collection if necessary ¨C I don¡¯t really need them.
But can hang on until the group is sorted out if required.

Hi could I ask you to hold on for a bit as we might be moving to IO
But could you put both onto the groups file section
Also could you send them to me one at a time so as not to overload my internet to

Hi Paul,
Had a look and I found a HP catlog CD from 1999 and an Agilent one from 2001.

Hi Nigel
You are correct about catalogues being on CD? I think they started that about 2000 but I do not have any
Perhaps we should get them onto the group
Regards Paul
Didn¡¯t they go to a CD based catalog after that¡?
I¡¯m sure I have one of those ¡® somewhere!!¡¯
Hi Dale? thank you for your input

There was a 2001 catalog and none that I have seen in 2002. For 2005 I have seen only a system and bench equipment catalog, and for 2006/2007 I have seen only an RF and microwave test accessories catalog. I have made no effort to collect catalogs from this
century as I am an HP collector and not an Agilent or Keysight collector.

Kuba There is no "address bar" in Thunderbird (at least not that I see) . You might be confusing this with Firefox where in indeed ABOUT:CONFIG indeed takes you to the "labyrinth of customization" -DC manuals@...

1) Click on the three bar thingy off on the right that says "Display the Thunderbird Menu" when you hover over it. 2) From the menu, click on "Preferences" 3) From the preferences screen click on "Advanced" 4) On the advanced screen click on "Config Editor" It will say some malarky about voiding your warranty, click on I accept the risk, and it will open a window About:config 5) In the search bar at the top of about:config, type: "mail.server.default.dup_action"
Right click on that entry, and select modify from the menu.
Modify it, and do the usual close save stuff.

Re: How the transition from Yahoo to groups.io will take place - exactly when I don't know
The general approach to this today would be to get access to an IP pool via VPN services and shoot requests from a couple hundred IPs instead of just one. Some functional analogue of it must be what
does, they¡¯d never finish it otherwise. ¡ª Cheers, Kuba

Just a side note,
Back when I, and others, were slurping Yahoo groups for archival
reasons, Yahoo network administrators observed the change in their
traffic, figured out what was going on, and implemented countermeasures.
Slurping, is, after all, against the terms of service.
What they did is set up filters, probably snort, that measured timing
of requests for messages from individual IP's. Initially, if the
requests were too fast for a human to have done, they put the IP into
a timeout jail, and it would 404. So, we slowed down our requests,
after all, patience is a virtue. Well, then they noticed that our
requests came like clockwork every second.... So, into the timeout jail
for requests for messages that came every second. So, the scripts were
changed to allow the user to insert a random repeat rate... And, Yahoo
decided if multiple requests from the same IP came at the same interval,
into the timeout jail for you! In the final version of the script, the
requests were made with random spacing, so yahoo decided that people
that sat at their terminals 24/7 were bots, and into the timeout jail.
So, next comes breaking up the requests into 2 or 3 hour sessions....
I lost interest...
Yahoo doesn't want you to slurp *their* data. It is against their terms
of service, and they are actively working to prevent it. More actively
than they are working to maintain reliable service, it would seem.
One possible explanation for why may take a little longer to
slurp the group then they once did.
I, however, wonder when Yahoo is going to change their strategy from
using snort to block bots, to using the DMCA, or other legal means?
