Re: HP 16505a and 16500b/c scsi interface

I had the opposite problem.? I had the disk but not the adapter.? But they pop up often on eBay without the software.

I wish there was a 16700 port of that software.

Anyway, I'll try to pull it off my 16500 and upload it to the files section this weekend.

One more thing - depending on the microwave counter used, and it's signal kickout, it may add some spurs to the displayed signal. There's not much isolation on the 1LO port. If anything looks suspicious, it can be confirmed by disconnecting the counter.

Hi Chuck,

?

Are you saying that you can clean the switches with IPA without taking the keyboard apart or removing it from the instrument? Do you just spray it in along side of the keys?

?

I have an HP 3326A with keys that are kind of hard to push.

You can measure the first LO YTO frequency - hook up to the LO output on the front panel. It runs from about 2-4 GHz. By keeping track of the 1LO, n - the harmonic used, and the first IF - 2050 or 550 MHz, depending on band, you can figure out the center frequency. The band scales have the info on them.

Re: BRIGHT Replacement LCD for 8753/8720 VNAs with dim LCD displays

Hi,

I have had experience with the SimmConn Labs CRT to LCD Replacement kit.

I put the 6.5 inch LCD into my HP 8566B. It is an AWESOME DISPLAY. Different Color Schemes, everything is better, weighs less, very good product.

They sell an LCD replacement kit for the HP8573A/B too (Newscope-9). Website is below:

My only affiliation with SimmConn Labs is that I purchased the LCD Kit. I can tell you that the guy that designs and owns the business communicates well with his customers.

I recommend this kit. The install time on their website and instructions is a little optimistic though.

I have both an 8720D and an 8753ES. Both are LCD, but the displays are rather dim. I see a VNA in eBay which was advertised as having a brighter replacement LCD. Does anyone have any experience of these?

I know that there are LCD replacements for older VNAs with CRTs, but I am not looking at those.

I had the floppy (but I've misplaced it).? However I have the files in a directory on a 16500B hard drive.? I don't remember any tricky installation; I just copied the files over.

If the display is dim, there's a good chance the CFL lamps in the display are at EOL. If a new display is not available, there's not a big deal for a handy man to replace the CFL lamps with mechanically similar devices (length x dia). Replacement CFLs for LCD displays are available on EPay and the usual distributors.

There's a small chance that the up converter used to fire (~1500V) and feed (~800V)?the CFL is defective, same story, most models are available for replacement.

Even the full display can be replaced with a newer model, but the datasheets need a very careful analysis, both from an electrical and mechanical perspective.

I did quite a few LCD repairs and replacements in Advantest (R3131, R3753, etc...) and R&S (UPD, UPL, etc...) equipment, it's not that scary it looks at the first glance.

I am looking for the battery adapter for the E4411 spectrum analyzer. This is a small part that screws to the back of the spectrum analyzer and makes contact with the battery.

Re: HP 8901A assistance needed.

Joe, interesting, the reason I found this problem was that I was implementing a more modern version of AN 286-2:?

The 61.0 function resets the listen flip-flop and returns the state of the adressed to talk, and adressed to listen flip-flops.?
61.2 does the same for the ATN and REN lines.? My main consern was that the manual was wrong on how it should be returned on a idle instrument.?

The 8901A GPIB connection does not respond when addressed. The instrument does understand most of the commands that don't require lock out, like a serial poll, but does not respond at all.? When addressed, the instrument does not show any sign of being addressed.?
I tested the bus transceivers first, and they are fine, ?after this, I have worked my way through address decoder, listen and talk flip-flops and are running out of options.?

The version I have has a masked ROM, and those should not go bad the same way EPROMs do.?

Re: [TekScopes] Re: Why is Mu Metal used?

Geoff

Mu metal performance is similar to that of ferrites on higher frequencies and powdered iron above that into the VHF region. They all contain the field due to the magnetic properties of the material used.

It is primarily a nickel iron alloy altho several versions exist using small amounts of other metals and up to a 80% nickel content

I understand a changing magnetic field would induce a current in the
copper foil, and so the magnetic field would effectively be "used up"
by the copper foil, though. Why is copper shielding not effective
against 60 Hz? That's not DC after all.

Thanks a lot
