Foam for active probe carrying cases
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýI have a couple HP active probes (54001A and 1145A).? The foam inside
the carrying cases is deteriorating rapidly and getting very messy.? Has
anyone any suggestions as to how to cut or mold new foam for the carrying
cases?
I've worked with rigid foam before but that could be cut easily with a
utility knife, but?that doesn't seem to work well with the type of foam in
the probe cases.? It's just too soft.
I'm thinking a hot wire cutter would probably be best to shape the
cutouts.? I'm open to suggestions that might work better.

Yes, the 8753D has a CRT display.?? I use the external display as it is far easier to read but one has to be more careful about button pushing!? The LCD replacement is a better solution but more expensive. The use of the external keyboard is an improvement that everyone can do, and at low cost.? Just plug it in and quit the time-consuming letter-by-letter labeling.? That one is a "No Brainer". I will follow this thread to see what LCD display is functional on the HP8753D at the lowest cost. I assume that there can be repair issues that should be undertaken first that would be less costly. Those would be of interest to me. I found it only buffers the GPIB address memory and I had no problem using the factory preset address only. I had assumed that the HP8593E would work in similar fashion without battery. I guess, I'll have to take it apart soon after all. The dimensions are critical, but easily done with a pair of scissors and an example spring. I made one by coloring in the spring stock with a magic marker pen, and carefully scribing the outline of the example spring. I then snipped it out using a pair of electrician's scissors.... and learned about the serrated edge. I ground the serrated edge from the spring with a diamond sharpening stone. The metal in an automotive "feeler gauge" has the proper temper. Somewhere in this group's archives is information about the proper thickness, and size. -Chuck Harris Martin.Hepperle@... HSWP is not an analog signal. It's one of the digital control lines on the 8566/8568 bus. Pulling the line low stops the analyzer sweep. This line is not normally available to the user, but for the preselector system it was brought out through a connector on an adapter that attached to the bus connector. thank you for sharing your experience. Indeed I found two of the springs, on the floor but the other one seems to be lost and not inside the box. As an interim solution I might try to make a coil spring. I understand that the length of the spring is critical and must be accurate. Regards, Martin |

85685A in standalone mode and how it operates with the voltage input from SA
I was trying to understand the 85685A preselector better thinking it might be useful as a tuneable preamp without the SA. I have one which works but is a bit flakey probably due to sticky relays and at some stage will likely try to fix it. Unfortunately detailed repair/schematics etc was never released. I had always assumed that the SA and Preselector used both HPIB and analog hswp voltage to coordinate tracking of filter. The documents say: "The HSWP line enables the preselector to stop the spectrum analyzer
sweep momentarily in order to perform other functions. Once these
functions are completed, the sweep continues. This allows the
preselector to continue to sweep in sync with the spectrum analyzer." I assume that preselctor gets messages about the sweep range from the SA and then uses the hswp voltage from the SA to track the SA in realtime. That is, it knows the voltages for start and end of sweep and gets told what frequencies those points correspond to, depending on user settings. If it is preselector is changing ranges in mid sweep, then it must overide/overdrive the voltage sweep as described above?? Does anybody know if this is how it works? The programming manual does not mention the HSWP line so hard to know if you can program frequency ranges and then have a voltage controlled swept filter? I believe the 8753D uses a CRT - not an LCD. My 4291B impedance/material analyzer looks very similar to the 8753 / 8720 series, and is of the same sort of era, but the display is much better on that. But the 4291B, despite looking quite similar to an 8753, was not developed in the same division of HP, so they might well use different screens. The 8753s were developed in the USA, whereas the 4291B was developed in Japan. Dave |

Another option with the HP8753D is to use an external display, a fairly common PC display. I have used one for several years, and an external keyboard as well.? Both are easily available as PC items, older and inexpensive.? The PC keyboard takes most of the work out of labeling the display so the printed display is much better for your record keeping. Back to the PC video display.? Look at your 8753D manual and note the frequency of the sweep. It is lower than the spec's of many video displays so match this when you choose one.? Also check which of the three colors carries the sync signal.? That is critical. Naturally you have to match the connectors for all external accessories.? Connect everything and look at the display.? It probably it needs the Horizontal width adjusted.? Display a Smith Chart and adjust the width until it is round.? Easy! I can go check which display and keyboard I am using if there is any interest in this addition.? ? Here's my complete HP inventory for the records: HP425A (excellent uV meter with valves, that I could rescue from junk and fix it successfully) HP3430A (DVM, also rescued from junk, nice, but a bit bulky, not used lately) HP34401A (impressive 6.5 digit multimeter, purchased recently) HP8350B+HP83529A (cool sweeper 10MHz...20GHz, purchased recently. I'm using it a lot. Quite instructive to see how various coax cables behave at 18GHz.) HP8593E (my latest purchase, 26.5GHz SA to replace a borrowed HP8591A). I might need advice on the HP8593E soon when I have time to take care. I have the impression that the highest band (19GHz...26GHz) shows 10dB to low amplitudes, verified with the sweeper as signal source up to 20.4GHz and double-checked against a Gigatronics power meter, which nicely matches the HP83529A output power display within a few tenths of a dB). The noise floor of that band displays 5dB lower that that of the previous band. I would have expected it to be 5dB higher than that of the previous band as harmonic mixing gets increasingly less efficient at higher harmonics.
