Re: Vintage parts for sale
I know, right?? But there's no choice in the modern world with business.? Even if there were, we couldn't use it, with the government CMMC requirements for data security ever-tightening on contractors. On Fri, Feb 21, 2025 at 11:45?AM Dave McGuire via <mcguire=[email protected]> wrote:

Re: 8596E Spectrum Analyzer Fault
Okay, well, I've been able to bring on the fault condition by simply rotating the datum dial whilst in the 'stop frequency' mode, so dirty keys are now looking increasingly unlikely (though they will require attention).
Since the consensus (such as it is!) is to investigate the PSU, I'll do that next. I'll scope the power rails of the individual low voltage supplies out of the main PSU and check their voltage levels are within spec. That should trap 99% of PSU problems. I'll also check the ESRs of the larger electrolytics and any suspicious bulges whilst I'm at it. Anything else I should look at? |

...but that assumes you'd be running a similarly awful piece of software from Microsoft. ;) Life is just too short for either.

Re: VNA Reference Impedance Renormalization
Good catch, Dave!? I'd kind of skimmed over the .pdf and then filed it for future reference myself. I'd measured some boards probably 10-15 years ago with a 50 ohm VNA and was surprised to get reasonable measurements.? I figured the power distribution network we were looking at would swamp out the 50 ohms of the VNA with near shorts and opens, but it didn't.? Must have been in one of those sweet zones.? In my *spare time* I'll run some resistors on the Advantest VNA in my garage lab (don't hold your breath waiting). Jim Ford Laguna Hills, California, USA

Hi. Just me, or is there a bit of an inconsistency on page one of that PDF? Between the text descriptions and the illustration below, regarding how to measure Low, Medium and High impedance DUT's.?? I think the order of the text descriptions and the illustrations are different. Also, the first illustration surely is a S11 measurement, not S21. Yes, No??? If no, why, in detail please. 73. Re: HP 3403C True RMS Voltmeter display fault
Hello,
For Joel:
1. Yes, the blinking +1 indication remains on DC. Actually, it remains +1 on any setting, with or without the converter inside. It does not seem to care.?
2&3. I will report the results.
?
For Jeff:? The clock is actually a good old NE555. This is what HP used but also the solution used by Intersil in the datasheet. I'll check the clock output.?

Re: HP 3403C True RMS Voltmeter display fault
Actually, if the display is goofy, not counting or "wiggling", maybe the clock oscillator that drives the system or display is not running. Probably a simple oscillator crystal with a pair of gates.
Look around with a scope and see if you have gating action anywhere. Jeff Kruth
