Re: HP 8341B 1992 firmware version
Hi Dimitrij,
Oh, I see, so it won't be easy to convert "normal" 8510C display to 8530A display because display for 8530A has additional board with PAL circuit, am I right? So probably only solution is to buy dual identity display (OPT 011) or display specified only for 8530A with already loaded software, do I understand correctly?
Best regards, Wojciech

Re: HP 8341B 1992 firmware version
Hi Ed,
I have never done this before but of course I can try to save it. Is 1.44MB floppy disk OK for that?
BTW I'm also looking for software for 8530A microwave receiver (for antenna measurements) which I could load to normal display from 8510C. Do you maybe know if I could find it somewhere?
Best regards, Wojciech |
Re: HP141T with multiple sections
As I recall, the manual warns that the power supplies may not regulate without plug-ins, but I'm relying on my memory here, and it ain't what it used to be.

In the right hands this is still a usable system. You could sell it (guesstimate 200-600€ for all - if working). It is still pretty repairable, unlike some of the modern test equipment. Local pickup is very much recommended, the total system is not lightweight. You could donate it to a tech school. If donated to a tech school there are many good articles and app notes still available on usage, theory, and applications. Don Bitters |
Re: Fan replacement 8341B
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýYes, it is quiet, hard to tell it is on.? I should have noted, I used a fan that has slightly less air flow than the original.? This instrument will be used on the bench, at room temperature, not cabinet mounted. Spinning the old fan by hand it is easy to hear the worn bearings. After being on for a while, nothing warm was noted. One more thing, after removing the covers, and moving it around, the RF gaskets fell? out of the rails in the side covers. Keep track of them, easy to lay down and re-install covers. ? Gary ? ? ? ? From: [email protected] <[email protected]> On Behalf Of saevar via groups.io

Re: HP141T with multiple sections
This depends on the age of the mainframe, late ones have a interlock connection & relay in the power supply, to prevent operation with no plug-ins fitted.
But for testing something in unknown condition, I prefer to make sure the power supply rails are correct before fitting plug-ins, this also applies to the 18x series mainframes.

My first question: since the HP141T was not run for more than 2 years, is it possible to run the HP141T alone with no section added. |
Re: Looking for Noise Source Driver Assembly E4401-60123 for E4407B Spectrum Analyzer
I'm afraid I've never looked inside any of the NFA units. They do look like an ESA on the outside but I think the internal signal path will have quite a few changes.
?
The noise figure of the NFA will be about 4dB up to 500 MHz and the ESA will be more like 7dB. So there will be differences in the front end design.
I'd also expect the NFA to have a dedicated noise detector that will have very good linearity. I think that it would also have to have accurate attenuators or at least some way to calibrate the attenuators for accuracy.

I tried to find a service manual for the N8973A but had no luck.

Fan replacement 8341B
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýPosting for information if anybody might be able to use it. My fan replacement in the 8341B was successful.? The Orion fan number ?OA172SAP-11-3TB is just about an exact replacement. ?Two differences noted. The fan height is not a issue, the original fan measured about 1.97 ¡°, the Orion fan is 2¡±. ?It fit perfectly.? The grounding screw was a short 10-32, screw.? The new fan has threaded holes for 8-32 and M4, the original wire and lug only fit to the M4 threads on the new fan, you will a M4 screw.? I carefully cut the sleeving and unsoldered the wires to have the original wire length available. The recommended McMaster Carr filter material also fit perfectly, McMaster number? 2195K305. Cut with scissors and fit into the filter bracket. Using a small brush and air ?I cleaned dust where I could without disturbing much.? Synthesizer back on the bench and working.? Looking at the interior of this instrument I wonder how they did that.? Hopefully it will work for a long time. Thanks for the help, Gary WA2OMY ? ? ? ? |
Re: Shielded probe cables?
If you're going to do an adapter, according to the user manual the 5032 has an input resistance of 220k and an input capacitance of 12pF.? You could adjust the 10k termination up a little (10.476k) to give you exactly 10k in parallel to keep the ratio /10.
?
I'm measuring the input capacitance of a 40-pin connector input on an HP analyzer card to be 26pF.? So you might have to add some capacitance to the termination resistance to get the compensation right.? Perhaps start with an adjustable trimmer to find the exact right value with the 5032.

Last night I tried the rocker fix. It almost worked, but when I went to put the final turns on the screws the plastic cracked thus I went to the next task, i.e. kicking myself in the ass. The only reliable solution is making a new rocker; will try with a piece of aged walnut wood and this weekend go to a junk yard for a small aluminium block.? Not exactly my piece of cake
?
The N connector seems to be screwed on the frame and it broke the mounting. Once I'm done with the rocker I'll tackle that and might come back for more suggestion
?
The batteries are/were a real bomb. In my 8350 they leaked so much and corroded some tracks This is my first repair of this kind but it has more mechanical tasks than electronic ones

Cheers
