Hi, Gary,

Yes, that's the meter.? I'm actually only interested in the battery pack, and I may already have a line on one; if that doesn't work out, perhaps I could borrow yours for a bit to measure it?

Hello!

I've used HP test gear all of my life (I'm 65), and now have a pretty well-equipped electronics lab at home with probably half HP and half everything else.? I also have some older HP computer gear, including HP 85A and 87XM computers I use to control the test gear with, and an HP 2100A that I'm restoring.

I use this gear professionally to design "widgets" that I sell to various customers - primarily industrial, but also some laboratories.? I also build boutique musical equipment and hope to introduce a product into that market next year.? Along the way I restore and maintain my older audio equipment.

Right now I'm searching for a battery for an HP 970A probe multi-meter.? It doesn't matter if it works (it almost surely wont); I want to measure the case, then 3D-print a drop-in replacement using modern lithium batteries.? I'm hoping that I can beg, borrow, trade, or buy one for that purpose.

Thanks!

It's just that there seems to have been a trend over the past few years where people DO post with uneccessarily loooonnngg subject lines.

I guess I am just old-school.

It's great to see you on this list too, Mark, Welcome!

I'm a decade behind you at 55, but I'm in essentially the same situation, minus (unfortunately) the music and audio stuff.

Most of my work is in designing boards for analytical chemistry equipment and M2M/IoT communications. My gear isn't exactly "at home"; my wife and I have a biggish (24K sq. ft.) commercial building that houses her business, my business, and our apartment. So while we do live in a different part of the building, I don't really consider it a "home lab".

So, tech nerds of a feather. :)

I'd be interested to know of your progress on that front!

Hi,

I did the same tests as you, results in the tables.

?

I attached a picture showing the diodes of the first mixer, I did the repair of two Spectrum this year with damaged diodes, so the one with which I did the attenuator tests today.

Maybe you should do this check. Ideally, if you had another measuring instrument that would allow you to know the RF level at the J3 connector of the first converter, you could know if the first converter is OK.

Continuing on the cal signal I checked the attenuator steps.

After factor default and with correction off I found the following:

At 300MHz:

I'm guessing my 20db attenuator is toast but I would have expected to have seen the issue coming back at the higher attenuation levels. Could this behavior be caused by something else??

Looking for an HP 970A probe multimeter *battery*

Hello!? A while back, I picked up a box full of HP 970A probe multimeters - the ones that had a little 3-digit display right near the tip.? There are about eight of them, in various stages of beat-up-ness, along with a few battery chargers of two different types and a few current shunts.? However, there isn't a single battery pack among them.
?
I'd really like to find just one battery pack, of any operational state (I can't imagine it would be working), so that I can take measurements and 3D-print a replacement, hopefully with modern lithium batteries inside.? Does anyone here happen to have one I could acquire (beg, borrow, buy, trade, whatever)?
?
Thanks!

Hi.

I'm fairly sure, if you search the usual web auction sites, you'll find
gadgets that can take EGA (& even CGA or analogue composite Video) inputs,
and spit out VGA signals for any of the still common LCD VGA monitors.

I have one such, but forget where I got it from.

It was not expensive either. But it is an EMI nightmare. (Mainly due to
the cheap Chinesium power supply!)

There are also VGA or "Display Port" to HDMI port powered converters too.
The one that really got my attention was one where you had various kinds of video input (VGA, HDMI, etc.) and the output went to a flat panel display, like you'd salvage from a laptop computer. Unfortunately you had to tell the seller which specific display you had, and then they'd program it for you, and it was only useful with that particular panel.

I'd like it a lot better if I could program the damn thing myself, having a whole pile of junk laptops around here. If anyone knows where such can be had, I'd sure like to hear about it.

I’ve used EGA sources with VGA displays in a pinch with a passive “DAC” with resistors and a black restorer using an RF Schottky. I don’t think I understand what’s so special about “native EGA” monitors. Even back when I actually had an EGA in one of my PCs in the 80s there was a little homebrew dongle that adapted that output to VGA. Many hobbyists I knew had one. I don’t have the schematics anymore but it was common and cheap to put together.?

From the tomverbeure reference you provided,?
?
"The voltage levels for the sync signals are a standard 5V TTL (good!), but the voltage levels for the analog signals are weird, with a baseline of -1.7V and a maximum value of 125mV (WTF?), or an amplitude of 1.825V."
?
I guess this would explain why you got the display to sync but with the video all black. VGA appears to be 0 to 0.7V positive, ie composite without the sync.
So you'd need to shift the levels up 1.7V and halve them to get anything displayed.
