Yes, I remember when I was working, the Noisecom sources cost was about 2/3 compared to the HP.? Good quality also.

Thanks,

Hi Gary

Noisecom. Inc actually designed and makes the HP346B, HP just re badges it. The Noisecom model number is NC364B.

Would anybody have a recommendation on where to send a 346B noise source for calibration, or verification?

Generate a new table if necessary.

It appears Keysight does still support the 346B, just wondering if there are other options that may be more hobbyist friendly.

Gary,

I strongly recommend Keysight, but you might give Noisecom a shot. They did some noise source calibrations for me at ham frequencies and reasonable prices a number of years ago.?

Re: HP8753B VNA question regarding if I purchase one

I should be noted that the 8753 6GHz models?also use the second harmonic to go above 3GHz, so comparing the Nano and the HP in that respect would be an apples-to-apples comparison... but only in that way.
Glad to see you have a Nano, GH.? Even with it's limitations, one still learns the basic fundamentals of using a VNA.? It is certainly a superior instrument for amateur radio operators than those high-priced "antenna analyzer" things that dumb things down to such a level to make the UI acceptable to non-technical people at the expense of versatility and accuracy.? A friend of mine was very proud of his purchase of his Rig Expert antenna analyzer thing, and I had to bite my tongue when I looked at it - and how limited it is.? A Nano VNA is much better at 1/4 the price, and one can find a used 8753x for not much more than that company's most expensive antenna analyzer.

HP8555A BAND SWITCHING PROBLEM

HI,
I was recently offered by a (good!) friend a 141T with 8555A, 8554B and 8553 IF.
?
?
?
There was no intensity control at first neither focus but some IPA fixed that.
Everything was fine on the band where I was but changing it was not possible.
I dismantled, not easily, the drum mechanism and, as was previsible, there was a piece broken.
As I removed at least two dozens of screws and springs I? must rebuild it soon or I will not remember!
?
?
Which kind of glue to use on that one? I could also make two 1 mm holes and add a piece of wire to fasten the two parts together.
Thanks for helping me on this great piece of HP gear!

Re: HP8753B VNA question regarding if I purchase one

I used the HP8753D and later ES from 2002-2023.? I started fixing them after I purchased a used one that had a broken port coupler around 2015.? They're easy to work with and when properly used and calibrated can be a really accurate tool.? In the end I fixed and sold about 3-4 units.? I have my own unit which I'm now planning to sell for 2K USD if anyone is interested (8753ES, 6 GHz model with options 001, 002, 006).? If you get lucky you can sometimes get the 6 GHz model (generally broken) for about $1000-$2000 on ebay.? The 3 GHz model generally goes for about $500 less.? I personally wouldn't mess with anything older than the D model given the slower speeds, lack of disk drive, etc.? The prices are similar enough that I think that the ES makes sense.? Many of these work fine minus the display which is a trivial repair job.? In general the backlight goes bad while the display itself is almost always fine.? Replacing the CFL tube for LEDs is a simple job and costs something silly like $20 for the light and driver on epay.? Of course about 1/2 the time with a dim display the light is fine but the mylar reflector has gotten hot and curled around the light blocking it.? You simply remove the mylar and put in a reflector (like aluminum foil) and you're good to go.

I created a folder on the files area for the 2225 printer. Perhaps you could add any documents on the printer, and write up your experiments, and what you have found out about the ink.?

Added Folder /All HP, Agilent and Keysight instruments in folders by part numbers/2000 to 2999/2225 Think Jet - the first inkjet printer. Has GPIB #file-notice

Re: VNAs with external test sets

Hi John,
It is possible to use external test sets or external couplers on
analysers without external jumpers.
It is just a case of configuration, and there is actually no need to
bypass the internal couplers.

Here are some details from the E5071C manual.

I don't have an ENA but I have done something similar with a Siglent
SNA5004A which appears to be based on the ENA.

The venerable Hp8753A-E series (and Agilent) were especially accommodating for testing active amplifiers using external high power directional couplers. The separate test set was removed and the Ref, A, B channels were driven directly with attenuators from various couplers before and after the amplifier.

Keysight has made it very difficult to do this without spending much more money. In their ENA line which is considerably less costly than their PNA line, the 5081A ENA-X is tthe only model with external jumpers to allow disconnecting the internal test set couplers. This is a 20 GHz machine (in the lowest version) with 3.5 mm connectors. Prior to discontinuance, the E5072A was closest thing to do what the 8753 models with separate test sets could. E5072A has type N connectors, can be bought with a 4.5 or 8.5 GHz top end. They can still be found used or demo, for less than $25K, and have a little cover on the front panel covering the hard coax jumpers that can be removed to allow accessing the receiver channels. I have two of these at work, just bought the second one from one of the test equipment rental/used dealers.

Re: Question / Survey: actual Longevity ( years, time ) of Hp ThinkJet 51604a & 99261a InkJet ink cartridges ?

?
Apologies if the title to this thread was not explicit enough:
?
It concerns the Hp 2225a HP-IB ThinkJet printer ( & its Inks ).
?
It was Hp's 1st entry into the InkJet printing area, and changed instrumentation and computer printing forever.
Think of the Gutenberg press, for this instance.
?
The Hp 2225 series printer was used with many Hp instruments of that era ) in ~ 1984, forward.
The Hp 2225a ThinkJet employed the Hp 92261a & later the Hp 51604a black InkJet Cartridges.
?
Recently, I have been exploring the complex physics and chemistry of these Hp inks, ( details of which are obscure and hard to find ),
--without which, the Hp 2225a series of printers (thermal InkJet print head) would not work.
?
My threads on the Hp 2225a and its Inks, while perhaps eccentric, are an attempt to try to? preserve some of the obscure information
for future restorers of these odd, but highly compatible printers developed for Hp instrumentation.
?
At some point, in future, the ThinkJet type cartridges (& ink replacements) will not be made anymore;
and likely all of the disposable ThinkJet cartridges examples will have hit the dustbin.
?
... And so, some grand kid somewhere, sometime, may lift a dusty Hp 2225a Hp-IB up out of some dark corner,
wondering " Gee, what is this thing, .... and can I get it to work ? "
???? ...Until that day.
?
In this thread, ( continuing an examination of Hp InkJet chemistry ),
I am trying to obtain,? via survey,? the efficacy and results of using older, unopened ThinkJet ink cartridges,
?? having sat on a shelf for years, (" Expired"), & definitely "Aged" ....
?
....to see if the Hp ThinkJet 2225a InkJet cartridges? still function, after X many years,? in the Hp 2225 ThinkJet printer.

I have been made aware by the other group owner that this printer has a GP-IB interface and is often used with test equipment. So it¡¯s not as off topic as I originally thought.
