Looks like it should be fine, except for the Q2 drive. The TL431 needs about 1 mA minimum activation current, so no matter what the reference terminal is doing, that 1 mA must flow into the cathode, which times the 1k R3 value, would certainly turn on Q2 always. Just drop R3 to maybe 220-330R, and maybe R4 a bit lower like 1-2k. Then the 1 mA quiescent will be plenty low enough to not trip Q2, but deliver solid drive around a few mA when needed.

I suspect that you may have not been aware of the TL431's minimum current requirement, which might explain why you had the R1 in the shunt regulator circuit. In that, as soon as the Zener knee voltage is crossed, current will start to flow into the TL431, up to around 1 mA, where it becomes fully active. When enough shunt supply current is available, the setpoint voltage is reached, and the TL431 will draw whatever current is needed for regulation.

The ZD1 part should be a little higher, like in the 68-75 V range. Those are just two standard Zener voltages, but you can put two values in series to make a number of voltages in that range, depending on available parts. The TL431 max rating is 36 V, so there's not a lot of margin with Vz at 51 V. More importantly, you want to put most of the shunt regulation power dissipation in the Zener, and the least in the TL431, to minimize self-heating influence on it, which affects the regulation voltage. So, running with a 75V Zener would be best in this respect, if all things stay just right. But, you don't want to get too close, when tolerances and variations are accounted for. A 5% nominal tolerance could worst case give about 79 Vz drop, so at the ideal 82V shunt value, the TL431 would have about 3V - just enough to run just fine. But, the Zener will get warm, and its tempco will raise the voltage even more. Countering that, the actual Vz will tend to be a bit lower, if the specs are at a higher test current than in the application. So overall, a 75 Vz nominal 5% 1W part is about the maximum you'd want, and a 62 or 68 Vz would be the minimum, for a single Zener. For replacing other gas tube voltages, you can scale things accordingly.

In case it helps others, it's not U20 or U21. U21 Dose not affect opperation of sig gen (work's and passes all self tests even when removed) mabe user storage? Closer look at screen shows a coloum of 2 (when black pixels) wide is deleted and appears 64 pixels to left. Not a memory problem in the usual sens as this would have to happen after decode (or a very weird internal fault). All points to screen, but swapping out screen with another gen makes no difference. A diagram would be really usefull...

It looks like the A15 board is fine, but the issue seems to be with the A14 board. The MAR/CS check isn't returning the expected signature.?

The RAM check is showing the correct signature (PF59), and both the digital storage check (211A) and partial interface check (5669) are passing as well.?

However, the ROM/Processor check is failing, returning the signature CPU1, which indicates a possible failure in the ROM (A14U8).?

At that point things start to be a bit too complex for me. So i'm planning on just finding new boards...?

Does anyone have an A14 board for sale? Ideally, I'd also like to buy an A15 board if available.?

BMW motorcycles used to come from the factory with Varta batteries. They were lousy; one of the first things we changed upon taking ownership of a new bike.

HP 182T Power Supply Troubleshooting
Hey everyone! Hope everyone is doing well.? I've been working on a HP 8557A in a 182T mainframe on and off for the past year.? Have been struggling with getting the 8557A working and I just acquired some additional tools/materials to continue troubleshooting.? I went to power on the 182T and only the line indicator light came on.? Checked the low voltage power rails and found all of them were low except the -100V rail.? I isolated the A1 and A2 assembly boards (i.e. the low voltage power supply) from the unit to do further testing.? I've shared a schematic below that I annotated with my measurements.? Since I acquired the unit (non-working), I've had to replace two 9V zeners (VR2) and both resolved the power supply issues.? This time the 9V zener was fine as I thoroughly tested it.? I've checked all the passive components on the 100V rail and could not find any issues.? I placed Q2 on my 576 and noted some very abnormal IV curves so I replaced it with a similar transistor, although I did not think it would resolve the issue (it didn't).? The series pass transistor Q1 also has some odd curves but didn't look nearly as bad (or irregular).? Of note is the large voltage drop across R4 from 96V to 7.7V, and the large ripple across C1.? Granted, C1 is a low value cap and it tested fine, but I did replace it (no difference).? Also verified C3 and C2 are good as well.? The 56V zener is also good.? A thorough visual inspection did not reveal anything obvious.? All fuses are good.? Any troubleshooting help would be greatly appreciated!

Don, thanks for the reply. That is exactly what I was looking for. 8620C + plugins seem to show up much cheaper than 8340A/B's (for good reason), so I feel this is a good option for those on a budget. I couldn't find a digital copy of any relevant manual specifying that this was acceptable but now I have a paper copy of the old 8566A Test and Adjust manual.
WISH I had an 836xx series! Those who can't afford have to go back in time, but it's more fun that way anyway.

The original frequency response alignment procedure for the 8566A was done with first and 8620C and an appropriate plug-in: 86222C for 10 MHz to 2.4 GHz; 86290C for 2GHz to 18.4 GHz; 86260C for 17.0 GHz to 22GHz, all normalized in output against? a 436A using 8482A and 8485A sensors. The align procedure is in the 8566A Test and Adjust manual, later adapted to the 8350B and 83592A/B/C and 83595A/B/C plug-ins. And finally adapted for the 8340B/C sweeper. You can also use the 836xx family of sweepers for the Test and Align/ Performance Test procedures.

I started disconnecting A9 and the resistors from the plug-in, and unplugged A8 pcb.

1) I checked collector of Q1 (pcb wires) to A9-pcb P1-pin-1 it was OK!

2) I checked socket XA9-pin-1 to socket XA8-pin-21 it was OK!

3) I checked A8-pcb P1-pin-21 to collector of A8-Q3 it was OK!
?
And then I took a magnifier and a light to check the XA8 connector.........
?
You will not believe what I found ... (look the photos)

The spacer for the gap on the pcb was in the bottom of the socket between the socket pins, and A8-pcb card could not feet in the socket.
?
After the reassembly I plug it in the main and put a spectrum-analyzer (I have one 9KHz to 2.9GHz),

John, ? To summarize, if you swap A8 and/or A9 between your plug-ins, and A8 and A9 work fine then the mystery thickens. ? If all power supplies are nominal, then the backplane remains. ? I would check the TP6 to collector link with the unit powered on, go into CW mode and choose a frequency, for example 3GHz, and check if the voltage at the collector of Q1 is the same as TP6. Do the same for the base of Q1 going to the collector of Q3. ? I took the liberty of modifying your Excel file to correct 2 errors, the calculation of the slope, and the type of graph. ? 
? I'm back in the daily chat we have. I have checked the A9 and the resistors R1 and R2. Wire by wire, pin by pin, they are the same (with continuity test and diode tests). I twisted the A9 in the two Plug-ins the working is working with both of them, the under service in not working. I'm out of new ideas, I have to think out of A8 & A9 I must go in the bigger RF block diagram to look for the reason of the problem. Any suggestion will be welcome.
