I'll have to wait until I reassemble the instrument to try...

Shouldn't take much longer than Mouser takes to deliver a couple parts.

If anyone happens to have a scanned copy of the earlier service manual they can upload, or can scan their paper copy, that might reveal some info. Manual part number 08648-90001

Hi Drew,

I'm curious about the PS fix. Was it the 470k "start up" resistor? I've fixed a couple of these by replacing that. (they were open)

I picked up a non functioning HP 8920B and I¡¯ve been hard at it. It had a no power on issue that I resolved by repairing the power supply, NOT FUN! Next is installing a new LED monitor that I already have as the old one is hardly readable it¡¯s so dim but all voltages check out so CRT is a dead duck.?

I have the following
Firmware V4.00 M01 ? Checksum 08111C36
Options
1. Tracking Generator
2. Cable Fault
3. Graphics Printout ( will never use )
4. Enhanced Spectrum Analyzer/ Markers
5. Full Test Setups?

My questions is, is V4.00 M01 the latest firmware??

It looks similar to the one from an 8753, but is not, and has a 20 pin ribbon cable at the back.

have LCD replacements. Find your instrument for the model to order.
I highly recommend it,?and so do?many?others.

Good afternoon

I have scoured high and low for this and thought I would ask here as well.

I have a 4395A that is barely out of tolerance on attenuation. Repeat tests confirms the failure and it is adjustment is the way forward from here.

This particular unit uses a part number 04395-18004 that runs with VEE (V.5 I presume) to make the adjustments. Would anyone here by any chance happen to have a copy of this adjustment?

All the best, Mike

Re: Sony Model CHM-7501-00

ThanksCaesar, I found some notes where you helped me set up the colour on it in an 8757D.
I replaced it with an LCD. I guess I will give it to the guy who bought my 8757D. It was a nice machine.

Re: Help figuring out my 8648C Signal Generator?....

I only have a guess, but the one output-related option I'm aware of is for higher power (20dBm, if memory serves). Perhaps that's what "MOD AY" is. Try setting the output power to around that value and see if the instrument accepts it.

Will an HP8753ES with the built in S-parameter test set slow down calculations compared to using an HP8753ES with opt 011 and the Transmission/Reflection test set (HP85044A)?

Our present analyzer is an HP8753ES - 011 --- It does not have a?built-in or attached S parameter test set - it only uses a Transmission/Reflection test set ( HP 85044A).

We measure the properties of resonances in our cavity, up to 3 GHz,in?the "thru" mode ( i.e. transmission mode) - We need the peak frequency?and the coupled Q of each resonance.
Our unit displays them on the screen when we select the correct display?mode.

More importantly, we use a Labview-based program and GPIB commands to?interrogate the Network Analyzer and have the pairs of peak frequency?and Q numbers for each resonance sent to our control computer.?In doing this, speed is very important to us. Our present system can?measure the f and Q of 6 peaks in 3 seconds.

I have a few question relating to what performance we might expect if we?used an HP8753ES with a built-in S-parameter test set:

  • Can the peak frequency and Q be accessed via GPIB commands in this S?parameter test-set configuration ?? We have no interest in the S?parameters as such - just the peak frequency and Q .
  • If this can be done, will the GPIB commands be different from the ones?we use now with our system ? We don't want to modify the software or have two versions to deal with.
  • If all this is a go - will the speed of acquisition be decreased compared?with our present system ?? Will the S-parameter "system" slow things?down in any way ?
Note that the same system using an HP8753C is considerably slower than using an HP8753B which is slower than the HP8753ES.?

Thanks for suggestions or help !

Help figuring out my 8648C Signal Generator?....

Hi all,

I recently picked up a HP 8648C Sig Gen and am trying to figure out exactly what it is...
It had the serial and option stickers removed (A semi-common thing here in Japan when companies liquidate old gear, because reasons) so I'm trying to figure out just what this unit is fitted out with.
Luckily the instrument stores the serial number in its memory, so I was able to use GPIB to read it out: 3426A00711

The three plug-in modules inside are a little strange when checking their part numbers... The part numbers don't seem to exist in the service manuals I have found, but they do exist when checking the Keysight Parts Finder website.

Details as follows:

A4: 'OPT REFERENCE' P/N: 08647-61046 ->?Described in Keysight Parts Finder as 'Replaced by 08648-60042', which is 'MOD Assembly REF - 1E5' so I guess I scored the option 1E5, high stability time base.

A5: 'SIG GEN SYNTH' P/N: 08647-61050 -> Described in Keysight Parts Finder as as 'RF Synthe Assembly For 8648B' (I assume the B designation isn't exclusive to the B model as there are many parts shared between B, C, and D models?)

A6: 'RF OUTPUT' P/N: 08648-60116 -> Described in Keysight Parts Finder as as 'MOD AY-OUTPUT'.

Does anyone know why these part numbers are different to the manuals (Both Agilent and HP branded manuals)? Maybe I have an older unit and they are just older part numbers?
Also, does anyone know what 'Mod AY' is?

Thanks!
Jared

Re: HP8753ES and speed

One of the primary differences between the different HP8753 models is the processor speed.? Newer = faster processor.? There are minor differences (like the addition of the disk drive on D and the LCD monitor from E onwards) as well.

I don't know the details regarding the speed issues, but things that affect speed include the number of measurement points and the IF bandwidth.? If you haven't already optomized these for your configuration you should adjust these for maximum throughput.

If speed is really an issue, you may need to upgrade to a newer instrument that will be orders of magnitude faster than the 8753.? There are really quick instruments that could probably address your issue for something in the 3-10K usd range.
