Re: Help figuring out my 8648C Signal Generator?....
I'll have to wait until I reassemble the instrument to try...
I'm currently dealing with a fresh-popped Rifa capacitor (the first Rifa that popped on my bench! So exciting, and stinky... :D ) and a few other repairs here and there. Shouldn't take much longer than Mouser takes to deliver a couple parts. If anyone happens to have a scanned copy of the earlier service manual they can upload, or can scan their paper copy, that might reveal some info. Manual part number 08648-90001 Thanks, Jared |

Hi Drew,
I'm curious about the PS fix. Was it the 470k "start up" resistor? I've fixed a couple of these by replacing that. (they were open)

Good afternoon
I have scoured high and low for this and thought I would ask here as well. I have a 4395A that is barely out of tolerance on attenuation. Repeat tests confirms the failure and it is adjustment is the way forward from here. This particular unit uses a part number 04395-18004 that runs with VEE (V.5 I presume) to make the adjustments. Would anyone here by any chance happen to have a copy of this adjustment? All the best, Mike |

ThanksCaesar, I found some notes where you helped me set up the colour on it in an 8757D. I replaced it with an LCD. I guess I will give it to the guy who bought my 8757D. It was a nice machine. Re: Help figuring out my 8648C Signal Generator?....
I only have a guess, but the one output-related option I'm aware of is for higher power (20dBm, if memory serves). Perhaps that's what "MOD AY" is. Try setting the output power to around that value and see if the instrument accepts it.

Sony Model CHM-7501-00
Can anyone tell me what instrument a?Sony Model CHM-7501-00 video monitor came from?
I found one in my storage. It might have been from a colour LCD upgrade but the only thing I can think of is an 8753B or an 8566A but I'm pretty sure it was not from them. It looks similar to the one from an 8753, but is not, and has a 20 pin ribbon cable at the back. |

Scott, can you suggest something?
"If speed is really an issue, you may need to upgrade to a newer instrument that will be orders of magnitude faster than the 8753.??There are really quick instruments that could probably address your issue for something in the 3-10K usd range" are you talking HP or something else? |

The loop contains the following commands: ? *OPC?;SING I'm waiting for the sweep to be completed. After I send the following command: OUTPMWID to read the data. This command searches for the peak and returns the data. The data returned is bw, frequency and Q factor. ? I don't know the resBW you used in your test, but you have 2 results here for 1kHz and 3kHz bandwidth for comparison. ? I can redo the test, if you specify the bandwidth, to do a best comparison. ? -Yves ? De?: [email protected] <[email protected]> De la part de peter bunge ? Will an HP8753ES with the built in S-parameter test set slow down calculations compared to using an HP8753ES with opt 011 and the Transmission/Reflection test set (HP85044A)?

Help figuring out my 8648C Signal Generator?....
Hi all,
I recently picked up a HP 8648C Sig Gen and am trying to figure out exactly what it is... It had the serial and option stickers removed (A semi-common thing here in Japan when companies liquidate old gear, because reasons) so I'm trying to figure out just what this unit is fitted out with. Luckily the instrument stores the serial number in its memory, so I was able to use GPIB to read it out: 3426A00711 The three plug-in modules inside are a little strange when checking their part numbers... The part numbers don't seem to exist in the service manuals I have found, but they do exist when checking the Keysight Parts Finder website. Details as follows: A4: 'OPT REFERENCE' P/N: 08647-61046 ->?Described in Keysight Parts Finder as 'Replaced by 08648-60042', which is 'MOD Assembly REF - 1E5' so I guess I scored the option 1E5, high stability time base. A5: 'SIG GEN SYNTH' P/N: 08647-61050 -> Described in Keysight Parts Finder as as 'RF Synthe Assembly For 8648B' (I assume the B designation isn't exclusive to the B model as there are many parts shared between B, C, and D models?) A6: 'RF OUTPUT' P/N: 08648-60116 -> Described in Keysight Parts Finder as as 'MOD AY-OUTPUT'. Does anyone know why these part numbers are different to the manuals (Both Agilent and HP branded manuals)? Maybe I have an older unit and they are just older part numbers? Also, does anyone know what 'Mod AY' is? Thanks! Jared |
Re: HP8753ES and speed
One of the primary differences between the different HP8753 models is the processor speed.? Newer = faster processor.? There are minor differences (like the addition of the disk drive on D and the LCD monitor from E onwards) as well.
I don't know the details regarding the speed issues, but things that affect speed include the number of measurement points and the IF bandwidth.? If you haven't already optomized these for your configuration you should adjust these for maximum throughput. If speed is really an issue, you may need to upgrade to a newer instrument that will be orders of magnitude faster than the 8753.? There are really quick instruments that could probably address your issue for something in the 3-10K usd range. |

Re: HP 8753D CAUTIO: NO IF FOUND: CHECK R INPUT LEVEL. Please help
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýHi Tom ? For the 8753D that I was repairing, ultimately it was really the YTO that was defective. You have already verified that the YIG does not carry any power output from 300kHz to 6GHz if I understood correctly, from 10kHz to 300kHz, it is not the YO which is the source. ? The PCB on A3 contains a lot of parts, but nothing complex, and most of them are for controlling the shaded part on the block diagram (Active bias, ALC, switch, temperature, detector...). For the RF section, these parts are mainly micro-electronics as shown on the inside of an 8753 transfer switch. ? The test described in the last email for Hank WD5JFR, could tell you if the pre-tune DAC is functional, it's a starting point. ? On the YO PCB, there are only a few parts: 2 capacitors, 2 resistors, 2 diodes, and a potentiometer. I also see 2 other power point tests, +5V and +15V. I haven't completely disassembled this section, but this is what I can see. ? I looked at section A3 this morning, I took a photo of this card...as an attachment. ? ? Transfert switch ? I don¡¯t think anyone outside of HPAK ever had an official one for the ES; I was just asking if you had drawn up something yourself. ? It has been a few months sine I tried to repair it, but the initial symptom was np RF above the 3 GHz band change, but then the lower frequencies also died. At the time, someone suggested a possibly shorted tantalum cap on the PC board, which I could confirm by measurements with the part on the board, but it¡¯s an SMD type part and I haven¡¯t yet obtained the proper equipment to remove it with doing a lot of collateral damage. Other necessary activities came along since then (what? Life outside of test equipment? Who knew?) so I haven¡¯t re-engaged yet. But this conversation is getting me fired up as I really like the ES for its overall simplicity compared to some newer VNA¡¯s I have. ? Anyway, thanks for your comments. ? Tom, N8ZM |
