Re: looking for HP85101C display keys plastic frame
Hi all,
Unfortunately, my model for my HP8757 did not fit well on Tom's HP85101C. Tom and me have had some off list communications, and he has done good measurements on his HP85101C, and I have made a new 3d model to fit this. He has now got this produced at JLC, and the fit is good. I have now uploaded the 3d file to Thiniverse: ??

I did not find an asset panel for the E1441A in the E5500 software.
My system has an E1437A and an E1441A, connected via MXI-2, as Your system.
Both work fine with the VISA driver, but I was never able to connect anything of the VXI stuff with the E5500

on the VXI mainframe.
If I configure the E1437A into the system, and try to access it in the user interface, I get a license error.
I use the license provieded from Keysight for the 000A00000 serial, which I did set into the 70420A.
In the release notes in the E5500 user inteface help menu, there is a hint that the VXI devices are not covered
by the generic license.

Re: 8902a Measuring Receiver question
Hi Donald,
To calibrate the 8902 you will need an external power sensor with the calibration constants entered into the 8902, (otherwise a error will occur) and this is connected to the RF power sensor port of the 8902, to make the internal RF level measurement receiver adjust to the correct power level. This is preferably done with a HP 11722A or HP 11792A sensor. The 8902 first reads the accurate power reading thru the sensor and then reads the power thru the front connector, and then it will adjust the internal meter to match. Pages 3-89 RF level measurement, and 3-95 Tuned RF level measurement of the operations manual show the calibration and measurement procedures.

I kinda used the same method as? Tom on other equipment. But I put in saran wrap as a separator and used a Silicone hardening glue
|
My go-to method for obscure connectors is to use bare contacts that fit the pins and hot glue. This method only works if the socket you are making a connector for is "watertight" or only has very small openings.
here are the steps: 1. Find contacts that fit the pins 2. Crimp contacts on to wires 3. Install contact on pins (add spacers if needed to keep separate until fixed in place) 4. Fill the socket opening with hot-glue to secure the contacts in place 5. Apply isopropyl alcohol to edge between hot glue and socket to break the bond 6. Remove the newly made connector
Another method uses shrink tube:
1. Find contacts that fit the pins 2. Crimp contacts on to wires 3. Install shrink tube over each contact 4. Insert shrink tube in to socket. Tube should be a snug fit against the wall of the socket. 5. Install contact on pins 6. Fill gaps with something (toothpicks, hot glue, shrink tube scraps...) 7. Shrink outer tube as much as you can while assembly is sill in socket 8. Remove from socket and finish shrinking outer tube
I have also has luck with 3s printing some but it is usually easier to use the above techniques for one off parts ?

Hello!
So I got myself an 7225B Pen plotter and I'm now looking for the manuals for this unit. I' aware that the HP Computer Museum has the stuff for the preceeding A variant but the B model is significantly different. The hand drawn B schematic someone posted there is also not of much help since there is only silkscreen for about 30 components on the board. Making finding what is described on the hand drawn schematic a chore and quite the guessing game.
If there is anyone interested in pictures I will upload those in a dedicated thread on the eevblog forum.

Aw maaaan. And I just realized. I couldn't find the piece from the same logic family, so I tried figuring out which one is the most appropriate replacement. So instead of the 74HC I got 74VHC. I bet their input are at least ever so slightly more sensitive. Dangnit.
|
Well, ... I replaced all the logic chips and the dead diode and the thing works except for one new problem. Pretty often, but not always the 20dB C stage trips the 20dB B stage too. Interestingly in both directions. The trace for the stage 20dB C stage 22V OFF coil drive go between the pins of the stage B 5V logic, chip, right next to the control input for the OFF signal. I gave it another good scrub after noticing this to get rid of any flux residue and other debris from the rework and it seemed to help, but then I put the whole thing together, hooked it up to the VNA and the issue is back.
I might leave it like this for now. Might have to manually set the input attenuation on the spectrum analyzer to make sure it's in the right state. Moreover this was the first time I used my 8720C VNA since I moved and I noticed that it's giving me funky results. I suspect it's my high frequency ECal module, as it looked ok with the low frequency one, but there's another can of worms to open and I haven't been able to clear this one either properly.
...le sigh...
I learned stuff. The attenuator is pretty fascinating inside. Was it worth the time tho?

Many thanks for all your answers! I will keep investigating and I will pay attention to the sequencer ROM. Regards, Lionel

I'd suggest that in any SA case where the response falls off greatly toward the low end, that you have a bad/intermittent connection in the RF cabling or parts. If anything goes bad and opens up, you lose the DC/LF content, while there's still enough capacitance in place (just due to proximity - that's all it takes) to carry the RF at the upper end. The basic amplitude versus frequency envelope you see is a high-pass filter of the residual capacitance against the 50 ohms system Z.
The badness can be anywhere, in any connection or component. The most likely though, tend to be mechanically related, like contacts inside connectors, and switches such as in RF relays and attenuators, for instance. Sometimes you can cure or at least diagnose "switch" type problems by exercising them lots of times through the possible states. A good strong input signal can help too, to clean contacts. You can use any signal that's well below the maxim input power rating - even a FG or DC, if your RF sources don't have enough juice. In the case of step attenuators especially, you may need plenty of power to effectively hit the deepest/furthest back pad sections.
The recent observation that it seemed to be working again for no particular reason, then failed again, but slightly differently, is highly indicative of a marginal contact of some sort. You can expect such variable results until you find the true cause. Good luck.

Re: E4407B option AYX Fast Sweep Time Domain
Hi,
I worked on it today, and I found the fault: two op amps were defective. I was able to test them out of circuit for confirmation. The problem of not having a picture on the screen was mainly caused by the fact that the DC voltage applied to the signal was not within the range of the ADC AD9050, the 10 output bits of the ADC were all at logic 0. I ordered the parts, but I'm not sure if there are other defective parts, I will make this first replacement, I will see for the continuation. I am not sure if the ADC is not damaged, removing these two circuits and retesting the board, I saw noise on the screen because the voltages at the ADC inputs are identical and in the normal range of the AD9050 component. However, the noise had a high amplitude...I will be soon if there is still a problem.
Thank you for responding.

The 8566 has such an adjustment on the video cards. Try cranking the intensity up for faster sweep times to see if the trace is visible, if yes then you have a fast sweep intensity problem.
