Any interest in HP871xA/B/B firmware modification for enabling options?

Something that I have wanted to do for years was to reverse engineer the HP Unix firmware for these model network analyzers such that installing the firmware would automatically enable all options, including vector capability.? I realize that many have done this by yanking the eeprom and setting the enable bits, howevre with a firmware update, this would no longer be necessary. Therefore, this firmware mod offers nothing new if you have already enabled the options via the eeprom. This might be attractive to those who do not wish to pry open their analyzer and/or don't have access to a device programmer.? I've accomplished the mods for the latest firmware versions for the A,B and C models.

My question is whether there is sufficient interest in me posting the archived firmware to the 'FILES' section?? My guess is that most people have already made the eeprom mod and will not need this patched firmware version.

take care -
Jim

Re: 3335A - extender cards

I can second that - I created an extender for working on my 83522A

The slots in the edge were cut by PCBWay as part of the board construction - Works well with the keyed cinch connectors in the SigGen.

If you are looking for the exact dimension finger stock, try .

Re: 3335A - extender cards

I created a set of Eagle PCB files for HP compatible riser cards that i¡¯m happy to share. I¡¯ve had a couple of sets made at PCBWay and they work well.? The stock PCB is quite wide but they are easily cut down with a Dremel or saw to the required number of tracks and the edge connectors are widely available at a reasonable price.

I am located in Southern California, but would be happy to cover shipping both ways, or/and make it worth your time in some other way.?
Thank you,

Re: Suffering from RIFA anxiety!

I did look at several pix. Yup ugly. But in the last pix did you notice the cracked resistor above the RIFA? It appears to have overheated.

The black stuff is a sticky, tar-like substance. It proved quite readily soluble in alcohol.

HP 3400A, After replacing two bad caps, I still have meter bounce on some ranges.

This video shows worst case meter bounce, after warm up it is a much better but still bounces about 5% of full scale. (I probably should have waited a few minutes before making the video.)
Any ideas what could cause this?

I could not get adjustments to make meter read full scale, I found C203 and C 205 in the first impedance converter defective, measuring in low ohms.
After replacing both caps, unit calibrated as it should, but then has this meter bounce. Power supply ripple is well within tolerance.
?A clue may be, the bounce is only on 0.001V, 0.003V, 1V, and 3V ranges. This surprised me and I checked 3 times just to be sure 0.01V, 0.03V, 0.1V, and 0.03V are all stable.
?????????????????????????????? Thanks, Mikek

Any chance you can share the source of the EMI gasket material?

They sure do spew! I guess the spewed stuff is not too very conductive...

Re: Suffering from RIFA anxiety!

For those interested in how exactly the exploding Rifa caps mess can look like I took some pictures after replacing the Rifa's in my HP6267B bench power supply. Interestingly enough they must have exploded about 15-20 years ago. At least they did not while I owned the unit. One of my colleagues owned it privately and dumped it in the recycling pallet at work. I took it home, and there it has been ever since, happily working without a hitch.

Yup, please can the politics, good or bad. There will always be someone who disagrees, and that will turn into a mess.

Walter,

As I too grow older (now 75) I sympathize with your situation and wonder what will happen to my small collection of test equipment. Unfortunately, I have no good suggestions and not even any bad suggestions for disposing of large accumulations of tubes and CRTs. Like everyone, I have a short list of a few I¡¯m looking for, but what you need is someone with a truck to take the whole thing.?

?

On top of my list is an HP 5083-0722 dual-gun CRT for my HP-132A Oscilloscope. This was HP¡¯s only dual-gun ¡®scope and is consequently rare. My 132A has a good CRT so I¡¯m not desperate but spares are always nice. With secure packaging and shipping from Canada to the States, it will be an expensive purchase but I can make it worth your time.?

My condolences on the death of Her Majesty ER2 and my congratulations on the accession of the new King, Charles III. I¡¯ve waited all my life for Charles to become King!?

Here at Sphere, we have slowly accumulated a LOT of Tek, HP, EIA and Euro CRTs for a wide range of instruments, and they take up a LOT of space, and now are very costly to ship and to store.?

Susan and I are now 73, and this makes disposing of these tubes more of an issue than before. We literally have an entire room filled with tubes of all kinds, and two storage buildings with walls stacked with CRTs. So, we are looking for suggestions as to how to move these on, before the only choice turns out to be recycling or disposal. The sheer bulk makes shipping difficult, so ideally somebody with a van needs to show up and haul away these items for pennies on the dollar. We are in West Kelowna, BC (Canada).

?

if you have any good suggestions on how to solve this, please let me know. I spent a lot of years curating a very good assortment of high quality audio, radio, transmitting, industrial and power supply tubes, and I hate to think of them in a land fill somewhere, knowing how many pieces of gear they could keep alive. Not to mention how many tube and CRT testers we have.

?

All suggestions welcome,

all the best,

Well long live the King (and he is my head of State); but, I was hoping the Queen would live longer. (...the most honorable head of state, the modern world has known.)

Re: Too many CRTs and Tubes

Hi Walter,

I know this would be a long shot, and not much help to you, but I though to ask if by any chance in your vast collection you might have a D14-390GH CRT (TELEFUNKEN/AEG) which I need as a spare for my aging Motorola R2001D.

Thank you.

Re: HP 400E sticky needle

I did miserably in chemistry if that¡¯s any consolation. Good job I was an electronics engineer¡

I used tap water, boiled. Not sure of ratio, just added it until it was manageably dilute. Not gel like but not too water like.

Re: RF Signal Generator notes OT

Interesting one drifted down.? Pretty uncommon.? The only time I have ever found one go down in value has been in HV circuits.?

Re: HP 400E sticky needle

Thanks a lot for the details!

So the dilution seems to be something like 1:20 in volume...
Did you use tap water, or distilled water?

Sorry to be picky, its just that I fear of making it worse if the conditions are not right.
I had poor grades in chemistry... ;-)

cheers
Martin

RF Signal Generator notes OT

Sorry for OT, but anyone with a 6060B 10kHz to 1050Mhz (Fluke) that has failed (I'm sure all of them will have failed by now) might need my repair info.
Fault is no RF output (or wrong frequency) with self test errors at every power up. Fault is in the Synthesizer (top section of generator). There are 2 carbon?
composition resistors that bias the transistors for the PLL output to the loop amp. The resistors are R111 & R109 1/2W, 510 ohms, one of mine had drifted down to 187 Ohms,
and the other had drifted up to 560 Ohms. Fortunately I had some 1% 500 Ohm Dale resistors which were quickly fitted to restore operation. The resistors can be extracted
from the top fortunately, as this PCB is difficult to remove. I managed to find the service manual online,
