Re: HP 3456A - Missing Diodes on A3 Board

I now see that "delta" 10 inside that bridge rectifier is a reference to change #10 which is described beginning on page 7-7. Page 7-8 shows the diodes on the A3 board instead of the external bridge. Thanks! That was really confusing to me and I suppose I need to read the manual more closely! Barry - N4BUQ ----- Original Message -----

There are two sets of CR5 through CR8. One set is on the A10 board and I think those may be the ones to which you're referring. Those are a mix of two zeners and two non-zeners. The other set of CR5 through CR8 are on the A3 board and, I believe, all four are non-zeners. They're not listed in the table of replaceable parts (there's a noticeable gap in the list of parts there as if they've been redacted) but the symbols in the board shows an ordinary diode symbol. It almost appears those may have been a rectifier bridge of sorts but I haven't traced the boards to confirm how they're connected. Somewhere (I believe it was on an eBay offering), there was a picture of an A3 board with those diodes and they were a rather hefty devices and it seems odd they'd be needed in this meter. Re: HP 3456A - Missing Diodes on A3 Board
The diodes CR5 and CR7 are over-voltage zeners. These could easily be left off with no effect as could seeral others. CR6 & CR8 appear to be part of a low current? 40V unregulate supply so not so clear how they could be left off. Are you sure of the numbers?

Sigh... nor was that one. Not doing a good job of address proofreading

The 8640 book is spoken for, but the 8901B book is yours if you want it. It's about 9 pounds and media shipping to 35601 appears to be around $7.00. You can PayPal to jra@.... John ---- On 3/3/20 3:21 PM, Harold Foster wrote:

As best I can tell, sending USPS Priority International would be about $85, maybe a tiny bit less. The book weighs about 6 pounds. Let me know if you'd like it despite that cost. Thanks! John ---- On 3/3/20 2:56 PM, Tam Hanna wrote:

Pete, that is good to know.? The 266 was dog slow...and especially so when it only had 64mb of ram.? The max it could hold was 128mb.? The 500MHz cpu is capable of 512mb of ram.?
The support team at Keysight would not deal with any 266MHz cpu and would just give away a 500MHz CPU rather than trying to support that old thing.? |

Re: PNA (E835XA) Hard drive issue
I have a new HDD for the 500MHz CPU, but you can also download the image from Keysight.
For assorted reasons, I don't want to post the link, but if you send me an email, I can give it to you. It is a 4GB file and if too many people access it, it may overload the server and exceed bandwidth limits.? In that case they might remove it.? As old timers like me leave, Keysight shows little interest in helping hobbyists.? My guess is that they don't even know the HDD image is available on their server, and I do not want to draw attention to that fact. |
8510C / 85101 Trace Glitches
Hi everyone! I've got an 8510C display section (aka 85101) with a distinctive and worsening issue that I'm going to have to sort out soon: occasionally, single points in the active trace will glitch. They jump by 20 or 30dB downwards and then they stick in place. The trace continues to update around them, but the glitches themselves do not clear on subsequent sweeps. Switching parameters (s21/s11/s12/s22) clears away all of the glitches. I haven't noticed any other strange behavior and the main RAM / display RAM tests haven't failed, even after looping for hours. My guess is that there's some kind of separte math RAM that's deteriorating or it's the first victim of a deteriorating power supply. Has anyone run into this issue before? Thanks, John deWerd |
