Re: Replacement battery for 8566A
Yup, that's the one, not as nicely made as the HP original but it dropped straight in and is still running! I'm not using the 8566A as much as I was these days so I find I need to fire it up for a few hours each week to keep the battery topped up but it does the job. Modifying it so it charges in 'standby' has been on my list for a few years ... I'll get there one day....!

I admit they don't hold the charge as well as a brand new HP pack did back in the day, (cheap cells?) but they aren't too bad.
Plan B which also worked was: 1/ Open the existing plastic shell using scalpel along the welded seam at each end (some give in easier than others!) 2/ Cut/tear off the two contact strips off where they are welded to the old batteries and set aside. 3/ Taking a new 5xAA cell NiCd pack sold to the RC car racing community also on ebay, cut off one cell from each side leaving the welded tabs sticking out from the 3 cells you are keeping 4/ Fold the remains of those tabs such that they lie nicely with the contacts saved from step 2 and quickly solder them so stuff doesn't get too hot. 5/ Reassemble plastic case frame and drop the pack back in the 8566A's holder and clip the cover back.

By all means, check out the options. I did, and actually bought (and
later disposed of) Prologix and several others. KISS-488 takes exactly
the philosophy you expressed, just give me a pipe to the instrument. It
allows you to do all the configuring via a browser, and also control the
instrument as well as do screen dumps that way, and also gives you a
straight Telnet pipe to the instrument. I like it a lot better than
anything else I've seen, especially for its platform-independence - but
of course, I just *might* be a bit biased! <grin>

OTOH, low enough charge rates are OK. Since like-size NiMH cells generally have a (much) higher capacity, so permanently charging them in the HP 85668 A might be OK. I don't have the numbers at hand. Raymond

Re: Looking to connect with other 4396B owners
Thanks for the HP Journal link to the 4396A articles!? Hadn't seen those yet, probably because I was searching for 4396B vs 4396A.

Another GPIB question which probably deserves its own number, 4) Does anyone know if the GPIB commands in VNA mode are compatible with the 8753?? There are some nice tools out there which support, e.g., grabbing Touchstone S-param files from the 8753, and it would be nice to use those on the 4396B too.

Re: E8357A upgrade questions
Replacing the battery (once you have the CPU board out) takes about 30 seconds.? Depending upon the instrument however, it could take a while to get to the battery.? In the case of the PNA, there are probably 2-3 dozen screws to remove. Labor is expensive.? While the PNA uses the CR2335 battery, the very common CR2032 will also work but will probably only last about 75% of the lifetime of the 2335 which is about 10-12 years.

NiCd cells are 1.2 V nominally, making the 3-cell pack 3.6 V, a bit higher while fully charged. This is the correct value for the HP 8566/68 A, I wouldn't confidently put in something like 4.5 V or even above before having a look at the schematics. Raymond

The 2000 Agilent catalog entry for this series is totally silent on the display type, as is the product data sheet.???
Their silence leads me to suspect that it's a CRT and that they're just too ashamed to admit that they cut corners on features.? However, if you look at the photo on the first page of the data sheet it sure looks like it's an LCD.? (Note the lack of a CRT bezel.)

There's a note in the file saying " Apparently the new memory board has a lithium battery installed which it says is good for a few years. It might be an idea for anyone with a B version to check this battery. I would appreciate any info on it."
I found some pictures on Kerry Wong's site:?, including a nice picture of the processor board. I'll have to check mine out now, see how the battery's doing.

Hi all,
I have an 8566A system that is in need of a new battery so it doesn't lose it's mind all the time. I understand that, unlike the B models, the battery is behind the front panel. Where can I find a replacement that will work?
Thanks!
