Hi Folks, just discovered I got my Model Nos. all screwed up. Should be HP 11808A Signal Generator and HP 11806A/B Attenuator Testing Software. Further postings will have a new Subject Line.

?

I have got the HP11806B Manual copied to PDF and will send to anyone who wants it individually. I don’t want to contribute to big files flying all over the place.

Next is to copy the HP 11808A Manual(s) 2 in the next day or two.

I believe that Sparko6079 is the guy you’re talking about – I’ve bought extenders for an 8340B and 5200A from him – I seem to remember them being in the 30-40 range. He mills them himself rather than having them spun by a PCB ?house (at least this was the case when I bought).

? Yes.? It was not my impression that the guy up in the NE US was that
expensive, but I don't remember offhand.? I think $34 is pretty
reasonable for an extender board, but double that with shipping is
rather steep, I must agree.

Dave,

As I said eBay sellers seem to want the earth for them. As an example one seller wants $34.00 AUD for a single 18 pin card and the shipping to Australia will be another $35.00. I can get boards made up in China of good quality for about $30.00 for 10 boards of that size and shipped to me for free. Yes I still need to add the connector and the board contact fingers will not be gold plated but hell it is a service tool not an operational component. You see the problem;-)

Further to my previous e-mail the HP part number for the extender card in question is 08662-60275 as per the 8662A Operating and Service manual part 1.

Re: 11729C oscillations

Looking some more at the schematic, and estimating the currents in the output stage, I think it would be good to check for another possible feedback loop issue. The electrolytic caps C5 in particular, and C8, should be checked, if not already done.

Looking into the emitter of Q6, it and the entire output stage can be considered a non-inverting amplifier with the output being the +24V supply. There's a short positive feedback loop from there via Q5 acting as a common-base amplifier, with C8 bypassing the AC and limiting the gain. There is also a negative feedback loop via C5 and Q3, counteracting the action at Q5.

If C5 and/or C8 have deteriorated over the years, it could be detrimental to the overall stability. This is also a more logical and comfortable possibility to explain why something used to work, then didn't - electrolytic caps are usual suspects for such things. The inclusion of these caps in the design is likely why they didn't have HF bypassing caps (as you noted) on the +24V PS - they apparently weren't needed.

So, even though you tried extra bypassing on the PS, it may not have been enough to suppress these loops. C5 and C8 are much more effective than brute force supply bypassing, since they work into much higher impedance.

Again, if you've already thoroughly checked these caps and added HF bypassing there too, then this hypothesis is out the window. If not, I'd recommend doing so, or maybe just adding new big caps across them to see what happens.

Hi Tony, this may be what has to be done. Would it be possible for you to send me a copy of the “unsecure” utility with any documentation ? Daun also has one. It may be the same (probably is).

Interesting. If you can get access to the source (via unsecuring the code, which I have a utility for) then you should be able to see what request it is asking from the dongle and simply hard code around that.

?

I’d be willing to give that a try though I have to admit that I haven’t had any experience with the debugger in HP Basic so it might be a longer effort than it seems.

Hi Tony, I believe you could make it work on the Viper Card, provided you can solve the Security Dongle problem I have referred to in my reply to Daun.

If we can solve that problem, I’ll be happy to send you the Code.

Hey Bill,?

Is there any chance of getting a copy of this? I've been looking for the B version for some time but that seems not to exist anywhere. I have both a Viper card and the last version of HP Basic for Windows so I'm interested in trying to get it to work.

Thanks,

Michael A. TerrellThere are a lot of cheaper listings than that one from the infamous Don Lancaster.

I buy the female to female 40 conductor ribbons, and use them to make wiring harnesses for test fixtures and prototypes. The different sizes of Dupont housings sell for pennies each, by the hundred. A small screwdriver or the tip of a small Exacto blade allow you to remove the single housings, and then to pop them into the larger housing that you need.

Harvey, would this be something similar to what you are suggesting? Looks like it, if only I did not need to buy 90 pcs it would be perfect. But I'll settle for 10 if need be, 90 is a bit much. I'll keep searching.

Re: 8648C or 8664A?

Dear All,

The 8664A has much better phase noise performance than the 8648C, pretty noticeable if making close in measurements on receivers.

I agree that the 8664A is very complicated and a big challenge to fault-find.

The technical questions I have raised on this forum on this generator have not produced any replies- I think there is not much experience of these generators in the group.

For most purposes, I think the best choice is an 8657B.

Alwyn

Dave,

This is inspirational! I particularly liked the part about our kind of engineers being somewhere on the autistic spectrum. When I was still working, colleagues and I would have huge discussions around this subject, and even the young’uns (who are more easily offended by perceived “labels”) agreed that we are simply “wired differently” to -ahem! - “normal” folks! I for one, know perfectly well that I am ?- unusual - to say the least! ?Thank you for showing us all how to be precise, non-inflammatory, polite and downright pleasant - we all know this is the way to get the results we want!

cheers,
