Re: Schematics for HP 8558B SA
As Dave from Artek says, it is helpful to know the serial number of the unit. What you most likely want is the "Operation and Service Manual" for this unit. The part number for the manual is 08558-90102.
Keysight probably still has this posted on their website as that is where I got mine, but it is not perfect and there are a few schematic pages that are not scanned completely/properly. If Dave at Artek has this manual, I would consider ordering it from him - Dave's manuals are, well, pretty much perfect.
Is there a specific issue you are having with your 8558B? I have several of them in service and might be able to assist you with debug and replacement parts (other than wafer-switch rotors).

Re: Frequency calibration?
I can't recall where, but someone posted a comment to the effect that the PPS output of their GPS unit had significant (~20 nS) jitter.
I'd suggest feeding the output of the reference to be checked to an MCU such as an STM32F4xx Discovery board along with the PPS from the GPS and counting the number of transitions between PPS outputs.

Re: Frequency calibration?
Hi Anders, with my counters, I put a 10 MHz sinewave from the GPSDO (thunderbolt) on channel 1 of oscilloscope, triggering on it, then I put the counter's 10 MHz reference to channel 2 and I trim the reference until there's no (or barely) shifting of the timebase signal with respect to the fixed (triggering) 10 MHz from GPSDO. What would be a reasonably cheap way of checking frequency calibration? I have an old hp 5328, with oven. I also have one of those cheap GPS modules where the PPS output can be reprogrammed. I set it to 1kHz and the counter showed 1.0000kHz. Sounds good?
There are u-blox modules that can be reprogrammed to output 10MHz and the 5328 can use an external 10MHz for timebase. Would such a module (below) work?

What I thought amusing was that the reporter I was listening to essentially said "I've never heard of this company before".? Usually reporters stay away from personal comments when in the field, but since they were reporting all day, I guess they stretching things out and/or getting tired.??
It is annoying how they always make these things sound so bad (although this was a pretty nasty firestorm).? They also reported an earthquake in San Jose today that was widely felt, but I didn't feel a thing. :-(? ?(I like earthquakes...)

The fire burned down the west slope of Sonoma Mountain (having destroyed many of the homes on the mountain) and stopped just as the slope flattened out, half a mile from our house. Many homes in the Fountaingrove area were damaged or destroyed; I'm glad to hear Keysight was not obliterated. No doubt, according to the news organs, the whole county and more burned to a crisp. As you say, care is needed in deciding which news sources to believe.

As some of you may know, Keysight's home of Santa Rosa, CA suffered a major fire.? Thousands of homes were destroyed as the fire raced down the hillside where Keysight is located.? ABC News (our ch 7) improperly reported that the entire Keysight compound was completely destroyed.? In actuality, only two temporary (modular) buildings were burned.? This is a tiny fraction of the floor space.? A few rental cars also burned. We did lose our credit union office but that is why we have ATM cards.

That's relatively good news. I
see the two main hotels? (Fountaingrove and Hilton ) weren't so lucky.
I'm still concerned about the homes of many friends.

I got a Boonton 8210 modulation meter dirt cheap a while ago. I bought a Boonton 82AD Modulation Meter for under $40, but I haven't cleaned it up and tested it yet. Michael A. Terrell

Re: Avantek SPP90 amplifier
Hello all,
Its alright Ed. I thank you for your replies. I'm currently in not too much of a rush at this time. Planning to swap this component around late fall or winter. The bench was relocated from a nice A/C room to a "hot box" called the gulf coast climate in preparation for a move that is on going.
I did more reading and it turns out this pdf is so close but not enough. There are 4 databooks in total (page 1-7 "How to use the databook series") with the pdf I posted being one of them. I need 10 MHz to 3000 MHz / 3 GHz at least. The data book I posted only has components going up to 2000 MHz / 2 GHz at most.
So currently, of interest to my case is the databook from Avantek labeled "Microwave and Millimeter Wave Amplifier Data Book".?I usually arrive at a dead end on google unfortunately. I think I can send an email or two but I'm not sure if they are available anymore.
Some more random searches of Avantek components reveal the reason why I came here. Google "PPA-517R" for example.?There is a databook from HP themselves or rather Avantek had HP's name on the datasheets after it was aquired in 1991. The component I have is date coded for 1994. If anyone has anything around that date or can point me where to go it would be appreciated.
Right now I'm trying to break down what "SPP-90" stands for. PP I guess stands for Planar Pak. This can't be a switch either. I know it isn't from the design of the circuit. It has to be some sort of amp with +15V (??mA) constantly going thru its DC bias. S and 90 I have no clue. Is there a modern equivalent of the package name for "planar pak"? SMTO - 8 or SM - 25? I'm going off of a successor of Avantek (Cougar/Teledyne).

Re: HP854A Test Oscillator with worn out attenuator
Low frequency distortion is likely a capacitor failure.? First check
the power supply ripple, then the electrolytics in the feedback
signal path, then the main signal path.? I would start with A2C3,
2900uf, as it is only in circuit on the low range and is part of the
level feedback signal.? Next, A2C5 and A2C11, A2C13, etc.

Hi Alan Bill and Dennis. Thank you for your helpful
replies.Unfortunately, the attenuator switch is not similar to the
HP652a, it's a double 16 pole 10 way (balanced with 1 dB and 10 dB
steps). Today I've tried various cleaners and I think the problem
was old switch lubricant that had hardened. After soaking it in
Electrolube, and spraying it with a strong detergent (Power Force
kitchen cleaner) it was rinsed with boiling water. Now, after
drying, it looks good. The only problem is that? the waveform is
distorted when the frequency is below 50 Hz.

Re: Chinese-made reflow soldering ovens
I also bought the T962 in order to solder SMD packages with power pads. Did not apply firmware change, but used the kapton tape mod. Another error i found and not mentioned in www was a safety failure. The mains protective ground is connected to the metal case in such a clever way that the case remains isolated, which means: No protective ground. Basically the machine works, but is electrically unsafe (illegal!). I soldered 20 boards, two each time, no problem at all except strong (poisonous?) smell.

Sorry Lex, I didn't reply with info back then, because I was under the impression that you had already found what you needed. The link you listed, from the title, seems to be exactly the databook I have on paper, so I can't add any new info.? Good luck with your searching.

I seem to have a box of parts mostly related to HP 652A. Do you have a Schematic to compare 652A to 654A Range Switch and Attenuator Switch? If you do, would you post the schematic for the 654A switches? Google did not turn up complete schematics for 654A. I would test these to see if they are good.

Hello I found this 854A on eBay recently and thought I could fix it. Unfortunately the frequency range switch is rather worn and the attenuator seems to be beyond repair.
