Re: 8594E power supply
For all of you with the 859X series portable spectrum analyzers, here is some information that may be useful. Earlier versions of the analyzers used a power supply which was designed and made outside of HP. After a few years, failures started surfacing and HP (re)designed the supply in-house. The later supplies are therefore a HP design and those are the ones for which a schematic is often available. Those schematics will have the HP logo, etc. in the bottom right corner.

Hi all,
Thanks for your help. I've just found a sch witch seems quite similar to what I have on the boards in this thread: So I can investigate a bit. The fuse didn't blown and no smoke! Hi : Is there anybody did repair the probe for HP 4815A ? Did anyone had measure the resistance between pins of the probe plug? I did but , the reading had big different from the manual page 5-13 ? I am using a HP412 to measure the DC resistance ! Any advise ? Regard Tony Cheung JUL 11 2017 |

Re: 8594E power supply
If the fuse isn't blown, some of the small 1-10 uf caps associated with soft start near the control IC may be bad. You also may need to replace some of the caps on the output side of the supply. A good ESR meter is useful along with a "octopus" or Huntron Tracker type unit that shows characteristic curves in circuit. Use good caps sourced from a known non-counterfeit vendor... When servicing power supplies for the Heath/Zenith computers (1980's) we only occasionally had schematics. We called the fuse the module replacement indicator due to the fact it took 4x longer to rebuild one that failed with magic smoke release... Hi Roland
It is common for no schematics to be available for HP power supplies as these were frequently bought in to a specification not a design from third parties at the time that the 8594E was manufactured. Did you check input attenuator (if remember 7dB 5W SMA-m SMA-f) just behind input N connector? Re: E4406A Input Attenuator
ok You use the input att to optimize your dynamic range of the analyzer--thats first of all determined by the first mixer 2d 3d compression point.Most hp analyzers are made to use the full dynamic range with signals below -20dBm--one normally use the input att to place the input signal at that range to have the max dynamic range---or optimize when using an external low noise preamp. Set input attenuator for 40dB 4. Measure signal using VSA == -15.4dBm 5. Change sig gen to 1000Mhz, 0dBm 6. Measure signal using VSA == -16.2dBm Changing the input attenuator does seem to change where the noise floor is but doesn't seem to impact the measured signal at all. This seems strange to me but I am far from proficient using this piece of gear. BTW The unit passes all self-tests & alignments without error but does seem to exhibit a problem (reported here on the forum before) of the LAN connection losing it's IP address between reboots). Re: E4406A Input Attenuator
Thanks all For a bit more information here is what I experience:
1. Set sig gen to 50 MHz, 0dBm 2. Measure signal using VSA == -16.25dBm 3. Set input attenuator for 40dB 4. Measure signal using VSA == -15.4dBm 5. Change sig gen to 1000Mhz, 0dBm 6.
