HP8170a Information needed
I recently purchased the HP 8170a on Ebay by mistake. I was looking for a generator that I could program to generate a particular signal. My goal is to find the resident frequencies in a circuit I'm building. On a limited budget, I've been able to make modifications to other equipment to obtain what I was after. I've spent hour looking for information on the HP 8170a without success. Before spending a great deal of time or expense on service diagrams, does anyone know if what I'm attempting to achieve with the 8170a is possible. Any information on the 8170a would be grateful appreciated.
Thanks T.O. tloleksy@...

Re: HP1652B Logic Analyser ET AL - system disk, how to create?
Hello Mike, Just a tip of the hat to your fine efforts and to Agilent for their obvious dedication and pride in their products! Please let it be known within your organization that I think I speak for many users and potential users of your equipment when I say that Agilent's continued interest in supporting equipment that is no longer part of your curent offerings speaks volumes on the efforts you will expend in supporting your current products. This does not escape the notice of individuals who make buying decisions in your market place. I, for one, will make sure that my procurement people know that I favour Agilent's equipment for this very reason. A wonderful product without manufacturer support is a terrible investment. Thank you. I used to have one and it came with several binders that were about 3 inches thick. Just look at the pictures of the system in an old HP catalog such as on page 454 of the 1984 edition.
Your best bet is probably to watch on ebay, however, Agilent does have some documentation on their web site. For example:

Re: regarding bluefeathertech ftp and 8568B
It may not actually be down, but Bruce changed the port number recently for reasons I'm not entirely clear on. (I wish he hadn't, because while I can always remember the URL, I will never be able to remember the non-standard port number that goes with it when I point people towards the site.) Basically, you have to use ftp://ftp.bluefeathertech.com:50021 now.
The readme file talks about the reqiured chips (four 27256s, 200 ns access time or better if I remember correctly.) Despite the note I put in there about 27C256s not working, at least one person was able to use 27C256s successfully, so your mileage may vary!

Mike,
I wanted to thank you and Agilent for doing such a good job with the old manuals. It is such a treat for those of us who have and still use the HP/Agilent test gear professionally to also be able to acquire and economically maintain the older gear for personal use.
Thanks again and please do not stop :-)

Hi,
The same chipset was used by Tektronix in the DM501A DMM. It might be easier to find a DM501A than the chips.

Re: plastic feet locking strip on HP equipment.
$14 for a plastic strip that is worth about $.15? Youch! One of my 8656A was missing the strip also; I think it's a case of people not being careful when they remove the strips (but I did without problem); don't just rip things out... see how they fit first and learn....

One description for it is "top frame plastic piece". By the early 90s it had become a slightly lighter color plastic than earlier. A part number is 5041-8802. You can buy them from www.agilent.com, but cost is rather high at $14. I need one myself, and I have no clue why these are so easily lost. Usually there is no need to remove them unless the front panel is coming out. AW __________________________________________________________ Any questions? Re: CRT part number in HP 85662 display section for 8566A, 8568B
Hi Guys,
I have done this with my CR70, and the CRT in my HP8505A. It works very nicely. I pulled the socket off of the CRT, and used the universal adapter, which is a bunch of micrograbber clips, and connected to the filament, cathode, control grid, and the focus grid for the G2 connection.
G2 needs to be the electrode that is closest to the control grid (G1).
The filament voltage on the 8505 is some where around 4.5V, and is stated in the manual.
As to the other settings, pick any O'scope tube, a 5UP1, should do.
You will probably find that the emission is way low. Don't worry too much about that. HP is pretty liberal in what they need. When you are in the manual restore mode, you hold the button down until the beam current drops, and then starts to rise again. Read the manual, it helps.

Hi, Mark -- You may find this page interesting: -- the procedure has been done on at least one other 85662A since I wrote it up, with good results. If you get the CR70 working, please post a detailed account of how you did it, and I'll update the page. Depending on what electrodes the CR70 needs to be connected to, the wires in the HV compartment are probably the easiest way to hook it up. There are a couple of different part numbers for the 85662A CRT, since it was produced in at least two completely-different physical form factors. You can search the Agilent site for the service manual .PDF (look for 85662-90086). -- john, KE5FX
