The 1989 HP Application Notes Index has this abstract of AN 245-3:

Maybe not exactly what you are looking for?
I have an HP35665A FFT analyzer so I think I understand your situation somewhat. Although an FFT analyzer has some display characteristics and control names similar to a swept spectrum analyzer, there is much that is different to learn: record length, bins, display resolution, time record, window functions, etc.
A basic primer on dynamic signal analyzers will probably help a lot. There are a number of documents on Agilent's site that are intended for other instruments but should still be helpful in developing an understanding of dynamic signal analyzer concepts.
Search there for "dynamic signal analyzer" or similar.
Also, according to the Application Notes Index, you might find these helpful if you can find them:
AN 243, The Fundamentals of Signal Analysis, a 60 page primer on dynamic signal analyzers.
AN 243-1 covers vibration analysis with a dynamic signal analyzer
There is also AN 192, Using a Narrow Band Analyzer for Characterizing Audio Products [more geared to the 3580A / 3581A analyzers]

need app notes on HP 3582a
I'm looking for any kind of a copy of App Note 245-3 and Understanding the HP 3582A Spectrum Analyer part no. 5952-8773. I'll take anything, regardless of condition as long as it's readable. I'll take any help I can get in operating this unit. Any tips on use or the app notes appreciated. I just got the op and svc manual CD off eBay but I really need the app notes or an experienced users guidance. tnx Hank wd5jfr

My scope does not have a 50 ohm input. If I connect the generator output to a BNC T-connector with a 50 ohm termination on the other end, it makes no difference in the waveform shape. HSDI, HP9417, HP9418 and HP9419
I currently work at KSC, Florida in the NSLD (overhaul and maintenance of orbiter electronics). We use an ATE that is primarily HP equipment, granted OLDer equipment.
Several components are pivotal for this system to work and interface with other vital components such as the HP computer and ITA for interface with ETU and flight LRU's. These are the HSDI interface cards (HP part# 94176A) and the HP9417/9418/9419 pattern generator/analyzer/guided probe system. The HSDI cards were actually built by Hunter Technology, from what we know, to interface with HP and Interface Technology components. The HP9417/9418/9419 components were built by Interface Technology with HP faceplates (known as TS- 4024, reference ).
We are currently having intermittent HSDI connectivity issues and also some HP9417 processing issues. Of course, our spare parts are dwindling as is support. We are working with Interface Technology, they are helping but their door is closing soon.
Does anyone out there have knowledge of HSDI in the context of interfacing Interface Technology components to HP components? This seems to be a bit of a puzzle and 'hidden' talent out there.
I have tried HParchives and Agilent archives/obsolete manual sites, and have been recommended to try asking on here.

Great to hear, Mike. I also note that most (if not all) of the material at seems to be available on the Agilent site as well.
It doesn't seem that long ago (early 90s?) when the 16500s were really hot stuff. I remember getting the hard sell on those when I worked at Dell. :)

chips (in the $5 price range). Since the chips you mention are single devices (IIRC single D and single JK FFs), there are various modern replacements. The replacements aren't pin-compatible, and usually come in SO package, but it should be trivial enough to wire them in.

You can likely replace those with equivalent-function stocked ECL chips (in the $5 price range). Since the chips you mention are single devices (IIRC single D and single JK FFs), there are various modern replacements.
