Re: Lamps and Mains Lead for HP412A?
I have an HP411 which is an RF power meter with the same clock work motor and photo interrupter setup as I suspect the 412 has. I got replacement bulbs from a place on the Internet called Bulbtown. You might Google the name but they had all kinds of type 47 bulbs and the type that are used in the HP stuff. They even had the blue tinted bulbs used in my old Drake 4 line ham transciever.

Jay:
I have had success! This is what I learned:
* Use Agilent LIFUTIL to pull the file off the HP LIF diskette ^ Drive has to be built in so the floppy controller chip is able to be directly instructed by the software. ^ Has to be a FAT or FAT32 machine or the software barfs. ^ Often the file on the HP LIF diskette is a tokenized basic. This means that one or more hex values have been saved instead of the ascii text. So "GOTO" will be a HEX value. # So far, the only way to convert an HP tokenized basic file to an ASCII file is to load it into a vintage HP series 300 computer and then re-save in the ascii format. The LIFUTIL has to be run to save the header information.
A lot of steps, but it is possible with help from our HP cloud to get important software off of LIF disks....

Greetings,
I have several agilent 10:1 passive probes (N2862A) and need some retractable spring hook tips (PN#: 0960-2900).
I searched the internet and distributors listed as Agilent dealers. Many had the REV. B version of the probe, but none that I found listed or stocked the tip.
The Agilent website (on-line store) lists them in stock at $4.66 each. However, I have learned that the on-line store is user belligerent and apparently designed to get potential customers to go away.
Can anyone point me in the direction of a source that has these probe tips in stock (in the USA) and actually wants to sell them?
Thanks for your time and consideration.
Regards,
Ken

Re: making 50 ohm measurements with a 75-ohm s-parameter test set
Hi all-
Thanks much for the feedback. In my original post, I neglected to mention I do plan to make 2-port measurements of amps, filters, etc. I guess it slipped my mind given how easy through calibration is! :-)
For my planned antenna return loss measurements, I see your point, David, that 30 dB is probably excessive. Perhaps 25 dB +/- 3 dB is a more realistic goal. I wonder, at my target frequencies (up to 450 MHz), could i reach this goal if I built my own cal standards for open and short using N connectors?
Thanks, Bryan

Re: 8753D floppy disk convert to usb?
I have an 8753D with the standard TEAC FD-04 floppy drive. I decided to attempt to replace the floppy drive with an emulator that substituted the floppy disk with a USB memory stick (thumb drive, usb drive, etc).
I did some research (not enough obviously) and purchased a GOTEK slim line (0.5") emulator on ebay from a seller called "e2wholesale".
Here is the 8753D upside down with the original floppy removed.
Here is the model designation on the original floppy:
In addition to the drive being "slimline" it also uses a 26 pin flat cable instead of the more common 34 pin IDC.
Here is a picture showing the cable that is connected to the 8753D:
And with the original drive removed:
here is the new floppy emulator:
And now a photo of the new floppy emulator connected but not yet in place:
We took a USB drive and put it into the device. Then in the 8753D we went to the save/recall menu and changed to the "internal drive" here are the results:
As you can see, it is reading the DOS files on the USB drive with great success! Then we attempted to "SAVE" from the 8753D onto the USB drive:
And you can see in addition to the DOS files there is now "FILE00" ISTATE file. At this point I thought the project was complete and began to physically install the disk emulator. This was a little tricky because I had to loosen the front panel of the VNA to allow me to remove the metal carrier tray that the drive or emulator must attach to.
Well, I thought the project was done, but in fact it doesn't really work very well. Allow me to explain. The first problem with this emulator is that it has a button that must be pressed to put the emulator in "WRITE" mode. If you don't do this before you attempt to save some data from the VNA, the data will write to the internal memory of the emulator but you will not be able to write it to the USB drive. This is annoying because it is hard to remember to push this button.
The 8753D vector network analyzer performs in the following way¡ Information is stored on the floppy by using an incrementing filename. The user has little control over the filename. The floppy is read (catalog). If the floppy is empty, the first time you save your data it will be saved as "FILE00" and the second time you save the filename will be "FILE01" and so on. The way the device determines what the next number to use is by "reading" the floppy before writing the file. It will use (max+1) for the new filename. Now, here is the problem.
Before I begin to save a new file, I press the left button (WRITE MODE). Then I initiate the SAVE function on the VNA. Well, the first thing it does is do a directory read (catalog) in order to determine the right file name to use. The problem is that while the USB emulator is in "write mode" it cannot be read. So a directory request (catalog as the 8753D calls it) will show NO files on the USB drive! Because of this, it will always write the file as FILE00 which overwrites the existing FILE00 file that was already on the USB drive.
What is needed is that even during a WRITE mode, a read should be allowed to occur. If a read occurs during the write mode, it should be allowed to work.
So Bottom Line: This kinda works. As long as you only care about storing one state file at a time for transferring to a PC, this will work fine (albeit cumbersome having to press the button before writing). If you want to store multiple states on the usb, you will have some trouble doing this, but again for transporting one file from the VNA to a PC it will work. Second issue is that deleting or renaming files does not seem to work.
So I have ordered a different USB floppy emulator from another company which is more expensive, but I will try that out in about a month and report on my findings then.
Regards Eugene W2HX
