follow-up - HP 3439A

computeruser04

The HP 3439A has been repaired. It was C8 on A9 that had failed.
I then zeroed the readout it using a calibration procedure found at
.
Thanks to everyone who replied. I also have a service manual
on the way to me from Joe VE7LBI.

Question - I zero the readout after a 30minute warmup. All ranges
read 0000 with the + & - flashing alternately. The Int Check -8000
is also set per the precedure. It will stay like that (zeroed) all
day. If I turn it off then back on the next day - the zero
calibration is off - not by much - sometimes +0001 or -0002. I can
zero it again - and it will stay like that all day. Is this normal
or am I being anal about a +35 year old instrument?

Thank
BL

Robin,

I have bunches of HP manuals, at: .

For the 1740A, it loos like all I have is the operator's guides, not a service manual.

I think ONE of the ones that I have might also be downloadable from agilent.com .

Good luck!

Sorry, it was a typo, I should have typed 3440. The manual is operating
and service with schematics.

Joe
I am interested in the manual if it is a service manual with
a schematic. You say it is the same as the 3449 (typo?)
Is it the same as the 3439 except for the sampe rate?
If so I am interested. leave me an email or web address
Thanks

Did you check all supply voltages for ripple?
Power Supplys has to be checked first, ever!

Re: HP 3439A

Ripple is about 1.5v on the 150v supplies and about .5v on the 50v
supply. This site:
has the calibration procedure for the 3439A which gave me some more
good information.
This site: mentions the
3440A which is very similar and their unit has the same symptoms:
"The nixie tubes light up, but multiple segments are on
simultaneously" so I am thinking this problem is common on these
units. Thanks for the replies so far.

I don't know if it will make you feel any better but I have a Fairchild Model 7000, 5 1/2 digit Nixie tube?DMM? and I use it all the time.? Works perfect.? I also have a Systron Donner 6152A, 500 mHz Nixie freq. counter and it also works perfect.? I love Nixies -no reading glasses required!? The pinnacle of display technology, IMHO, ?was planar gas.? LCD displays were the downfall of modern electronics- screw low power consumption!?
?
Sorry I can't help you with the schematic.? There are many vintage manual resellers (and some free) ?out there? try:

Neat document from Agilent

Quite a few typos scattered throughout, but still a very interesting
historical document on HP/Agilent gear through the ages.

Re: 3455, 3456, &3457 multimeters

Dave Haupt

That completes the continuum for me, then!!!! Very
cool.

I have a Fluke 8050A, a benchtop 4.5 digit DMM with
battery option. It's now 20 years old. I have never
calibrated it. I take it to work once per year, and
check it against an HP 3458A (8 1/2 digit calibration
standard) and it's always right on, down to the last
digit of the Fluke. On eBay, they're about $50.

My question, though, is what are the "bargain of the
century" DMMs that are HP-IB controllable? Or serial,
or USB or....? The 34401A is too steep for me, given
that I probably want several remotable DMMs.

Subject: RE: 3455, 3456 & 3457 multimeters

A friend in town (W7TOM) just bought an HP 3478A, and
we were both very
favorably impressed by it. I have a HP 34401A on my
bench which I
bought
brand-new for $1K, and the 3478A is almost as good at
20% of the price.
It
has one less digit of resolution than the 34401A (5.5
instead of 6.5,
either
are more than sufficient for nearly any practical
purpose and much more
than
any handheld can offer), and a couple fewer bells and
whistles (dB,
frequency...) that I don't use anyway. Calibration is
simple, with no
need
to open the cabinet, and the manuals are excellent.
Bob's 3478A showed
an
invalid calibration checksum on one DC voltage range,
so we set it up
against my 34401A and he was good to go. The other
ranges were so
close to
the 34401A that no adjustment was warranted.

Dealers sell the 3478A for around $300; the going eBay
rate is $200 or
less.
These things are the T&M bargain of the century, IMHO.
I wish I'd gone
the
3478A route -- I could have gotten essentially the
same meter for a lot
less
money. Didn't know they were that cheap, or that
good.

I have a few HP3456As and have been pleased with them.
The have a 1000 volt range and I think they can measure higher
voltages than the HP 3478.

The HP3456A's red LED display is easier for me to read
than the LCD display on the smaller meters.

I have some HP test gear for sale, e.g. HP 3456A, HP 3455A,
HP 3325A, HP power supplies, etc., for pickup only in Illinois.
They are large and I don't want
to have to pack them.

The 3478A is certainly a nice meter, but I have a hard time getting my
bench lighting right so LCDs are readable without too much light falling
on the scopes. Too bad it doesn't have a backlit display.

My personal favorite DMM is a Solartron 7060, but it's a lot larger than a
3478A.
