If anyone comes across one of these and can take a photo of the internals, I'd love to see how it is constructed.
For now I'll make a version with point-to-point wiring, I'll upload more pictures once it's done.

I can't recall seeing that on the cal certificate of a 4284A which I had calibrated by Keysight. Not 100% sure. I managed to get a free option 006 (support for 4 m cables) from them, which might be very useful for a possible job I have coming up.
You can see the use of the box (or equivalent connections) for performance verification on pages 10-6 and 10-9 of the 4284A Operation Manual. It is used on a few other instruments too for performance verification, but I don't think it is used for the actual calibration/adjustment IIRC.

Re: HP 70004A with Video DRAM error

I recently encountered an ¡°A5 graphics DRAM error¡± on my 70004 display and while web searching came across this thread.? Initially my inclination was to try replacing the 16 VDRAMs on the A5 processor board but seeing the original posters lack of success I decided to do a bit more debugging.? The service manual, 70004-90046, on page 4-43 describes the procedure to test each DRAM type.? When running these tests I found that the GSP VRAM of which there are 16 was fine but the GSP DRAM test showed an error on bit 4.

Consulting the 70004 CLIP showed bit 4 to be on U102, after replacing this 64kx4 DRAM my 70004 display is now working fine.? I hope this might help someone else.

Re: Several problems with Agilent 54810

Re,
Can you confirm if the din interface of the Atlas 757 PCi3 board (in the Agilent 54810A) is in XT or AT format.
I made myself a ps2/ Din adapter, but no communication, except the reset of the 3 leds at startup.
Has anyone managed to put on a PS/2 keyboard?
I am blocked with that!
thanks

Great read, Gianni!

Several problems with Agilent 54810

Hello,
I am asking you to move forward on several issues.
First this oscilloscope did not start at all.
I found the failure by dismounting the main acquisition board which had a capacitor on the burnt-out, short-cuircuit -12v. Now power supply OK, it starts. All voltages controlled. Good!
Of course on 2nd failure, the disc is completely? mechanically out of order. To be see later so disconnected at this time.

Now on the outside screen, i have the bios and its errors.
I have the impression that the retro lighting does not work (in theory powered by 12v and give HT.) LCD screen? black. I don¡¯t think there is a feature that starts the retro backlight later.?Can you confirm that it simply starts basicly when power on.

As, there is no keyboard, I wanted to plug one.It ¡¯s a 5-pin din on an Atlas 757 PCI3 board. So I adapted the cable of a PS2 keyboard? (cut + welded a din).?It initializes (flash of the 3 leds at power on) but after? impossible to communicate.
So is the keyboard accounting AT or XT, it¡¯s not the same protocol ? Somebody have made the test?
So for that i am? blocked for the bios

Thanks for your answers

Re: HP 8970B with 346B Noise source - Error 13

Apart from suspecting the 5dB pad in the 8970B...

I will hint at a solution to this problem may be the supply voltages out of tolerance.

Check all DC voltage levels on the various boards and modules. NOT by measuring at the PSU test pins.
I once had a similar problem in an 8970A. That instrument repeatedly failed self calibration with various
error messages. All voltages checked out OK on the PSU but on the (large) CPU board, the TTL 5V
was somewhere like 4.3 to 4.4V and fluctuating. There are several axial inductors that decouple the
DC voltages, one of which had a too large DC resistance. Once replaced, the instrument returned
to fully functional.

Cheers

Re: HP 8970B with 346B Noise source - Error 13

It works on the 8970A and reports +4dB after calibration.
It doesn't work on 8970B.

Do you have a 8970A and 346B to check the uncorrected value reported?

Hello,

Since the thread about cheap noise source on the other list got very
interesting and I was doing some repairs on my HP 8970A and 8970B I
would like to ask some questions which I am not sure how to approach.

I bought a 346B some years back and used it with my 8970A and all was
OK, recently I got an 8970B with E70 error. I found the 1st EPROM broken
and replaced it with the firmware found on KO4BB site. Since I was
inside the unit also replaced the battery.

And here the problem started...

After battery replacement I had E80 so I proceeded with the calibration
33 SP and the 346B source. Problem is that it fails in around 1-2
seconds with E13. E13 is saying that it is practically not enough ENR
coming from the source?! Correct me if I'm wrong.

So I powered on the 8970A and tested the source there. All OK and 33.1
SP works fine and shows around +4.x dBm uncorrected value after it finishes.

From my readings on the HP lists I saw some people reported that the
value should be +6 to +8 dB uncorrected. WHy I only see +4 dB?

So I am not sure now if my 346B is broken or the 8970B is broken since
everything works on 8970A. Another possibility would be that the 5dB
attenuator pad in the 8970B is broken.

Can someone tell me what is the uncorrected value for the 346B and 8970A
after calibration? Is there any difference in reported uncalibrated
value between 8970A and 8970B?

Best regards,
Razvan

Thanks to all that replied and helped me find a counter. I settled on an HP 5342A from a list member.

Re: Looking for 1GG7-4210 amplifier datasheet

No, not Avantek. The IC (just the chip) is supposedly still in production at Keysight, but I have no idea if it's still available in that package. I think it was designed in the 1980s.

Vladan

Re: Looking for 1GG7-4210 amplifier datasheet

Could this be an Avantek part after spinning out from HP?

Re: Looking for 1GG7-4210 amplifier datasheet

Just a guess, in case you can't find the data sheet:

Vd=7V
Id is adjusted for 150mA max. or leave it at Idss if it's less than 150 mA.

Vladan

Re: Looking for 1GG7-4210 amplifier datasheet

The IC looks like an old HP traveling wave amplifier, but what¡¯s around it does not look like it was made at HP. The gate voltage (bottom left pin with the wire going to the feedthrough) is quite likely adjusted to give a certain drain current, so it won¡¯t be a fixed number on the data sheet. Vd is probably 5-7V. Sorry, I don't have the data sheet.

Mine seems to be C-E short ... which is sub-optimal
