HP 8594A Spectrum Analyzer - garbled Display after 3.6V battery replacement

Hello HP enthusiasts,
I have an HP 8594A spectrum analyzer. One day it greeted me with the dreaded "cal constants lost" message. After replacing the 3.6V AA battery, the analyzer came up fine on first startup. But now, on subsequent boot, the display is garbled. A check with a scope on the video output shows, that that the frequencies are all wrong (frame rate is 4.4Hz instead of 60Hz and line frequency is 9.4kHz instead of 16kHz). I have seen the garbled display before, when going into preset (but after a reboot, the analyzer was fine, so I just didn't use preset...). It seems to me, that the "unfitting preset" setting, is now the power on default? I've already got the 8590A service manual from Artek, but a complication came up - the (A16) cpu board is quite different from the description! It's marked as an "08593-60005". So from an HP8593A? I'm at a bit of an loss here. Since the analyzer comes up fine on first boot, I've had the thought to overwrite the preset with the "actually applied settings" in that moment, but can't find any information on how to "update the preset", so to speak. I hope to find someone here to shed some (or any, really) light on the situation, and revive the analyzer.
Kind regards, Christian

control cart for LODA

hello group,
I am looking for an OMs who would have a copy of the implementation of the components and settings of the LODA control card and TRACKING GENERATOR because I do not have it in the manual I have thank you very much ON4LJ Jo?l

Re: HP 3457A FET Transistors

> I will get some on order

J3xx fet's should be (used to be ?) pretty cheap, I suggest getting quite a few more than required in case you need to do some matching or parameter binning for e.g. Idss , Vgs etc...

PS Craig, if you could disable your email signature for this list that would be nice; it comes with a bunch of attached images which is annoying and takes longer to load...

Re: 5086-7337 *Yig Oscillator issue*

Also I read about this on Kerry Wong blog and CuriousMarc video.

For the first harmonic band I need to place a mixer in the upper path. So the mod only be possible on band 0 (0 to 2.5 GHz)

Because the benefits of leveling circuitry, I'll give it a try for didactic and entertainment purposes, but still not happy with the project...

Ruben

A few years ago I retrofitted the tracking generator option to my 8595E analyzer. I¡¯m pretty sure the LO distribution amplifier (LODA) had a bias value written on the top label. There is a trim pot on the control board for setting the bias. All the information should be in the 8590 series service manual. You just have to fish through it and pick out your applicable unit.
Hello Jeremy,
thank you for your answer I will see on this side there and looked in the manual what is said about the settings to be made thank you very much joel ON4lj

Re: HP 3457A FET Transistors

Now that's a plan! I just won a non-functioning HP 5518A Laser head for 200 bucks because I'd always wanted to play with one and was really looking forward to trying to fix it and find out how they worked....changed the (intact looking) fuse but which measured around 250k Ohms...... and the darn thing lit up, locked and worked pretty much to spec.....Oh rats!

Sure. But while I own a 3457A, I've never had to repair it, so I
can't help you with your FET issue.

It was frustrating, actually. I bought it on eBay as "broken",
wouldn't power on, and got it very cheap. (like $75) The power switch
was mechanically jammed. I was looking forward to a fun
troubleshooting
session!

Hi Craig,
I don't have this equipment and I didn't do any repairs on it so can't give you 100% assurance. However, I gave you the link to Keysight?(I am sure you know HP->Agilent->Keysight connection) part finder for the cross reference. It is as good as it gets for free advice :)

I usually don't recommend replacing parts without checking if they are faulty. However, everyone has a different debug approach.

Hi Craig,
Debugging the actual issue is more fun and I am sure Dave would agree but the transistor can be found by searching Keysight:

Database says it is a J304. Mouser in US has them, I don't know about the distributors in Australia.

Hi Craig,
Service manual says

"8-49. Front end zero measurement errors (error code 16) and AC flatness test errors (error code 256) can often be remedied by calibration. Refer to Section V for the appropriate procedures."

Did you try doing an AC calibration first?
