It's in the basement of my house will never go beyond 21¡ãC / 70¡ãF. However I don't really know where the 115V are comming from inside the instument. Is there a transformer or power supply for it? The instrument can be powered with 110V to 240V. Does anyone have the schematic od the instrument?
Hi Marc, since all these instruments can be switched from 110 to 220 volts, to supply 110 volts to the fan it either has a tap on the secondary or its connected across one of the two halves of the primary. In any case: a 220 volt fan replacing a 110 volt fan will run at a fraction of noise and power consumption, but the large 120x120x25mm types still deliver a decent airflow. Plentyful sufficient if your unit is running in the basement, except maybe for a power supply operating at the edge of its envelope (but these usually have thermal cutouts). cheers Martin

Hi All,
I was given a HP8568B that doesn't work.
The 85662 display section is good but it seems the CPU in the analyzer box does not boot. The lithium battery on A15 leaked and was removed at some stage in the past. The acid got under the clock module and ate the leads away. The rest of the board looks ok so I pulled the clock chip and substituted an external 14.7456MHz oscillator for the purpose of testing but still nothing from the CPU.?
All power supplies measure good. Both INSTR CHECK LEDs remain on. None of the LEDs on A15 come on ever even if I push the INSTRUMENT PRESET key. All the yellow leds on both units remain illuminated.
I don't have extender cards, just a 'scope and a meter. However I do have another functional 8568B.
Is it reasonable to take a good A15 card from one machine and put it in another for troubleshooting purposes? Besides the terrifying risk that I might end up with two dead analyzers is there anything else I should consider??

Marc,
I have several 8970Bs and I don't find them to be objectionably noisy unless the fan bearing is out of oil. I would try to take the fan apart, clean the bearing and add new oil.

HP-8753E Which PROM Holds S/N & OPT Info?
All:
I posted earlier in the week on issue pertaining to my inability to enter a license key for my 8753E. While I solved a definite problem in my A9 CPU Board, the PLCC EEPROM does not contain Serial Number or OPT information. After peeling back a few stickers and looking deeper, it appears I have multiple memory devices which would hold this type of data.?
After looking around the CPU Board I have no less than 4 Dallas DS1610's and 2 AMD AM27S191ASC's. I think the Dallas NVRAM probably contains calibration constant for the VNA. I am leaning towards the two AMD27S19's. Can anyone confirm which chip on the A9 Board houses the data I need to gain access too?

In my HP5345A I have EBM-Papst 4606N fan. This type is still being produced, it is 115V/20W with 106 CFM but it is 51dB(A)! Counter is specified for operating temperature from 0 to 55 degC. As we don't have 55degC in our homes, I am sure lower CFM will work fine.
The most silent fan I have found is 22dB(A) but just 53CFM - type OA125AP-11-3TB. I am more considering another fan 76CFM with 32dB(A) - type 11938MB-A1K-EA-00. Still not decided which one to buy.

I don¡¯t have the 8970B schematic in front of me, but I¡¯d guess that if there is a 115VACfan, it is connect across half of the 230 VAC wired primary of the power transformer.
As for reducing the noise, I have on other HP boxes put a power resistor in series with the fan to reduce the supply voltage. I don¡¯t recall the value I used but the fan nameplate should tell you the current it draws at 115, and you can calculate a rough guess as to the resistor value and power rating. As the HP boxes are designed with the idea of being stuffed in a rack with other instruments also adding heat, and allowing for the air filter to be somewhat clogged with dust, half speed will still move plenty of air assuming you are not operating under those conditions. That should substantially reduce the noise, but the squeaking will probably require some sort of attention. Some light oil might be sufficient to determine if the bearings just are dry. Your decision on what to do at that point.

I have an older HP 8970B which is however in good condition. Just one thing is annoying, the fan is very noisy and makes a loud squeaking noise. I guess the bearing has become bad.
As this fan is 115V (even though the insrument is used with 230V) it's not that easy to get such a fan replacement in Europe. Has anyone some advice how to get the fan quiet? Some oil at the right position? So far I did't tear down the fan as I don't want to berak it...

Correct, mainly the whine is affected by slowing down even an otherwise OK fan, but I'll bet it would help some with the bearing noise on an older fan as well.
Given that even a brand new fan in most of the HP gear of that vintage was unjustifiably annoying, slowing the fan was a big improvement if the heat removal needs allowed.
