8640B - No Count

 

I've borrowed a 8640B which as far as high level output works well.

The problem is that the counter on both internal and external selection shows all zeros with three decimal points thrown in.

There seems to be a lot of knowledge out there and heaps of discussion but I did not see one on just "0"s without flashing. Has anyone experienced this before?

I'm trying to get my head around the LO amp, doubler and tripler circuit of the 8560E Second Converter.

Does anyone know to identify the transistor "Bz" and the propriety chip 1GXX-XXX?

I have a sig gen and a specan that both go to 3GHz.

The test point on the converter is labelled LO test and I assume that this is the 600MHZ but I see nothing on this even though the 600MHz input is correct. If however it is the 3.9Ghz, then I have no way of seeing this without mixing it to another frequency.

I can't see the output of the A8 Low Band mixer as it is again too high for my specan but the RF input is correct according to the manual at -21dBm and the drive voltages are -4.96V for the -5V rail and -4.14V for the -4V rail.

The 310.75MHz output of the converter when measured as per the manual is -59dBm where it should be -38dBm.? When I measure the voltage between the test connector J19 pins 15 and 6, the drive to the converter pin switch, I get +14.48V which is in the range of the manual.

The next item in the manual is measuring the mixer bias on the test connector J19 pin 1 where I get -39mV which is outside the required range of -150mV and -800mV. After that it just says if outside the range, probably the second converter is faulty.

The voltages to the second converter are:-

J12-1 Mixer Bias:??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? -39mV

J12-9 Doubler Bias:??? ??? ??? ??? ??? 14.48V
J12-10 Driver Bias:??? ?? ?? ??? ??? ?? 0.465V

Without the circuit of the converter I don't know the relevance of these but the only one that looks a bit strange is the doubler bias.

Do you have any thoughts after your experience?

I will pull it apart again and check out some of yours and Gerald's suggestions on the DC feeds, the feed throughs and where this LO test point comes from.

Do you have a second spectrum analyzer? You should check the output of the test port on the converter.
And also the input level of the LO and IF.

Maybe you can tell us a bit more about the fault. What is the loss through the converter?
Guess this SA only go to 2.9GHz? so there is no high band?
What test equipment do you have to test and fault find with.

Here's the response I got from Keysight today:

If the oscilloscope has any of the following symptoms, it may qualify for a free repair under our internal Service Note DSOX2014A-06B:

  • It powers up but the screen remains blank and the keyboard LEDs begin to flash in sequence
  • Its splash screen is displayed with cycling keyboard LEDs
  • It continually reboots
  • The boot halts with any combination of the Serial, Digital, Math or Ref LEDs remaining lit

In this case, you can contact our service center at the following number and request an evaluation for the free repair:

800-829-4444 (Press 3, then 1)

If/when you call, please be sure to mention the Service Note and be as detailed as possible about the behavior you¡¯re seeing.? If your description does not match one of the four failure modes listed above, you will be charged for the evaluation.? The evaluation fee would only be refunded if our repair technician confirms the failure is covered under the service note.

Before sending the unit in, you may want to try solving the problem on your own.? This would require updating the firmware, which is only possible if you can get the unit to boot properly one time.? I would recommend making at least 10 or 20 attempts (i.e., power cycles), although some users have reported success after as many as 100 attempts.? If it boots normally just once, you should immediately install the latest 2.65 firmware before turning it off.? You¡¯ll find the download and installation instructions for the update here:

The new firmware would permanently solve the problem, and the unit would not need repair.

Looks like there's an internal service note that addresses this very issue. I know my scope meets the criteria of the service note. We'll see what Keysight has to say about qualifying for a free repair. As soon as I get an RMA number I'll be sending it in.

Can you post pictures from the bottom also ? Would be also nice if you would take out this board, and make photos with different angles, it's a lot of reflections there.?

I didn't know that it has no eeprom. It would be nice to have? some detailed pictures of trigger plugin from inside maybe that would help. About eeprom content i menaged do changed it so it's recognized as 54717A, but it doesn;t allow for calibration anyway without HW modifications. The plugin behaves like normal 54712A but with different name. I took out cpu board week ago, there is 16 flash ICs as someone mentoined before, maybe it would be easier to just hack the firmware instead of playing with calibration plugins ? This 54717A plugin is a cancer... I need order PLCC adapter to do this. BTW. Do you have operation system disk for it ??

Hello friends,

I'm having problems with my E7495B, I used it a month ago and everything was normal. I went to turn it on again and put it to work and it showed the following message:
Erase at 0x03a40000 failed immediately: -EROFS. Is the sector locked? Status is not identical for all chips: 0x8000a2. Merging to give 0xa2.
What can it be? how can i proceed?
