Re: 8341A *restoration adventure*

RubenRubio -

You are probably going to need to do an unleveled RF adjustment - but DO NOT touch any adjustments yet.

I suggest you try measuring power at the INPUT of the attenuator or the output of the SYTM - there could be a broken or damaged cable.

PRESET;PEAK runs an auto leveling program
PRESE;CW;SHIFT;METER eliminates the ALC circuitry and drives the modulator directly by the RPG - When you do this test, you get the max output unless you turn the RPG. I usually do PRESET;CW;SHIFT;METER followed by power measurements at various frequencies.
At this point, I'm going to guess there are problems (or adjustments) on the SRD bias board and also on the YIG tracking board

Cheers!

Bruce

Quoting RubenRubio <rubenrb2019@...>:

Hi Bruce

Yes, I have the 8341A operating manual and the 8340A's four manuals w/ good scans from KO4BB website. Unfortunately, I cannot find the service volumes for the 8341A itself, but the 8340A's are very similar, hope.

The PRESET;SHIFT;MANUAL and the PRESET;SHIFT;EXT checks shows no faults at all, no one is blinking. No red fault led in the ALC board is on, also the loops are locked. That's weird, maybe only a calibration is needed to fix the problem.

What you mean when you said 'do a PEAK'? SHIFT + PEAK? or PEAK only? I do the last and power don't rise up a bit.

On band 0, non readable (low) at 10 MHz, -17 dBm @ 1 GHz, -14.3 dBm @ 2.1 GHz
On band 1, + 5.4 dBm @ 2.3 GHz, +8.9 dBm @ 5 GHz, +8 dBm @ 6.9 GHz
On band 2, -11.7 dBm @ 7 GHz, -7 dBM @ 10 GHz, +4.2 dBm @ 13 GHz
On band 3,very low (no readings on both meters) at 13,5 GHz, -11 dBM @ 15 GHz, -8.5 dBm @ 18 GHz

The only low but reasonable readings are on band 1, the others are very low.

Re: 54615B Agilent Scope Amplitude Low When Measuring 120V AC

What probe are you using in each case?
What model is the other 'scope?
AC or DC coupling?
The 54615B AC coupled LF 3dB point is 10 Hz and accuracy only 2% so a 10% under-read at 60Hz is not unreasonable.
Generally speaking it is not a good idea to measure the mains with a conventional mains powered 'scope without using specialist probes.

Robert G8RPI.

54615B Agilent Scope Amplitude Low When Measuring 120V AC

Bostonman

I have an Agilent 54615B scope that works fine, except, the other day I measured the AC line voltage (119.8V on a meter) and got 318V p-p on both channels.

I used another oscilloscope and confirmed the amplitude to be approximately 340V p-p.

At low voltages such as the probe calibrator of 5V, the scope measures correctly.

It has passed on the self calibration, and, from what I see in the specs, it shouldn't have such a huge error at high voltages.

Does anyone know if this is normal of does something needed adjusting?

Re: Replacing missing button cap(s) - HP 339A

On the subject of knobs.

If you have a dead/cracked knob, or access to a lathe, you can get the insert.? Aluminum will work equally well.? They knurled the knob insert.

Print the knob so that the center hole is very slightly smaller than the insert, but only by, say 10 thousandths.

Since the plastic has a relatively low melting point, all you need to do is to orient it properly (or not, you can thread the insert once put in).? Heat the insert gently, and push it in.? You may want a fixture to do this to keep the centers aligned and the shaft perpendicular.

Tek molded the knob around the insert.

Re: Replacing missing button cap(s) - HP 339A

Of course it can be sold, but after it is depreciated,
anything you get for it is income, and as such subject
to taxes of all sorts.

Remember, companies sell scrapped depreciated equipment
all of the time.

The big question is does the company want to go to the
effort to enter the depreciated item into its books as
inventory, and to process the sale. Any sale to an
individual will (depending on the state) trigger a sales
tax... And may require the company to get a sales license,
and a sales tax license. B-to-B sales need neither in
most states.

Regards,
R.

You are quite lucky.? Look at the documentation on the scope, and do not run it at high intensity because of the (relatively) limited lifetime of the Microchannel CRT.?

While there's protective circuitry to help the CRT, being conservative is not a bad idea.? I don't normally use mine, using a 7904 with the same plugins.? If I need it, though, it's there.

Continuing the e-waste saga ....

About two weeks ago, my current company was getting ready to move to new, larger quarters, and management decided to get rid of anything relatively old.
This happened to include a mint condition Tektronix 7104 with 2x 7A29, 7B15, 7B10 plugins.? I saw it sitting forlornly next to the large dumpster and after double-checking on its fate, I decided to relieve the trash haulers the effort of hoisting it up and into oblivion.? I later found the FET probes in their cases at the bottom of another pile.
Took it home and dusted it off, cleaned it up to like-new condition, and fired it up.? Works perfectly with a bright trace and no burn in.

I've since found out that this model was the fastest analog scope that Tektronix ever made, if my history is correct.
Displays very cleanly and solidly triggers past 1.3 GHz.

Go figure.
The moral - keep your eyes open when you hear of a company move or its cal lab closing down and everything there pre-1991 is suddenly "worthless".

Oh, I'm very much aware. (not my first BBQ) The problem is that people in general, but suits in particular, don't understand the difference between "ownership" and "custodianship".

What is this asset? Does it cost too much to have? Is it economical

They're not paid to consider the intrinsic value of that to anybody. It
doesn't contribute to how they are judged, which is the corporate bottom
line.

For a scrapper?

What are the pieces worth? What can I get for these useless cables I've
cut off, they're all copper, aren't they? Manuals? What's the price of
used paper per ton? How much gold can I get from this?

Hobbiests and engineers?

Best of luck.

I rescued a nice HP 339A distortion analyzer from an e-waste bin at work, but not before another piece of equipment was dropped in an sheared off the 400Hz filter button cap, which was lost. There is about 1/8 inch of the push-button switch post left inside, behind the front panel, and the switch stills works fine if poked with a stick, but looks bad.

Questions:
1. Is there any source for the grey cap nowadays?
2. Could a remaining button cap next to it be pulled straight off as a sample?
3. Has anyone made a new button from a sample with either epoxy in a mold or 3D printer?
4. Any other ideas for button cap repair/replacement I'm missing besides buying another 339A for parts?

Thanks.
