Re: eBay adding 6.6% TAX for a sale from UK to the USA?
For years(1950s in my state), sales tax has been due from buyers on everything they purchase, except for things like groceries, medicine, clothes, etc which are exempt. When the buyer resides in the same state as the sellers, the sellers have always been responsible for collecting and submitting that sales tax. For out of state sellers, the responsibility fell on buyers to submit that tax on their state tax returns each year. Unsurprisingly, few did.?
The state governments didn't care for years about mail order or phone sales because they didn't amount to much, and they had little authority over out of state sellers. For years the measuring stick was whether your business had a presence in the state of the buyer --- an office, warehouse, manufacturing, etc. In that case, because the state has some control on your ability to conduct business in the state(which could be revoked for noncompliance) then those businesses needed to collect the tax as well.
With the rise of ebay and subsequently Amazon, the states want their damn money --- it's no longer inconsequential amounts. They haven't had luck forcing buyers to submit, and so they went to courts suing the major out of state sellers to force them to collect the taxes due.
In-state traditional retailers and internet sales complained to the state as well, because they felt unfairly punished for being in state. Out of state sellers could sell things cheaper to buyers because they didn't need to charge the tax. The state used this argument to help secure their access to that tax revenue.?
While I know many people demonize large companies like ebay or amazon, the truth of the matter is that those companies fought for YEARS spending millions of legal dollars to prevent them from collecting the tax that's lawfully due. You can argue whatever self-serving reason, but their interests were aligned with mine. I didn't want to pay it unneceasarily.
The battle was lost and most out of state sellers collect tax based on where you reside, which differs from place to place.
Hope this helps Keith

Re: eBay adding 6.6% TAX for a sale from UK to the USA?
Just a couple of side notes.
If you send the item from the UK on UPS as a normal business transaction and the value is less than $800 then there are no taxes from UK to USA.
If you sell via eBay, and especially if you use their "global shipping program" stuff happens/ ? Essentially, while your item is below the threshold, eBay is not. eBay are what is known in US speak as a "market place facilitator" and are required to collect sales taxes in some cases. It can vary depending on the destination state.
And finally, sales taxes in the USA are a huge mess.? Some states are "destination based"? some are "origin based", some are a mix of the two.? They even vary across the state depending on postcode,? as there are multiple elements that make up the tax, including variations for county and city taxes.? For the UK I have one tax in our online systems, just VAT at 20% ... for the USA our online systems have several thousand entries provided by external scripts, and potentially individual tax payments to each state ... all of a sudden, letting eBay manage that sounds like a bargain!

PDP8S. I once worked on one of those (with some amateur radio stuff I'd written). The 'S' stood for serial but in practice it stood for 'slow'! It was smaller (and cheaper) than a straight-8 but was pretty short-lived.
Here's us trying to get my '8' assembled and running having just delivered it to Bletchley Park. If anyone wants some Dectapes I still have 'a few'!

Sales tax for the delivery state, up until a few years ago, this kind of taxation didn't happen, but now the state and local entities need money for things like school super intendents who get paid $250k annually

Re: eBay adding 6.6% TAX for a sale from UK to the USA?
I recall that state sales tax is sort of like VAT but only applied
at the 'retail' level WA was at about 6.5% when I lived there and
everone complained about the 'sky-high' level - ha, try 20% guys!
Every state has it's own rules and IIRC very few are the same, some
apply it to on-line purchases and some don't for instance?? I guess
eBay have to keep track of it state by state. As to PayPal, I'm
guessing they just call it 'VAT' as in 'Value Added Tax' without
meaning 'UK Government VAT'?

Yes, I live in Ohio and every internet purchase now includes Sales TAX and ebay charges it on everything. I would debate international items being charged as that make ebay the taxing authority for companies not legally required to collect state sales tax but that¡¯s¡¯ another argument. ? Sandra ?

Re: HP 83620A Low-Band Module A24 - 5086-7463
Hello Martin I followed your problem on the 83620a and I am wondering if you ever solved the lowband issue. I have a 83630L comming and There is no low band it seems like it rolls off from 2Ghz and down.
I do also see holes in the response in the GHz range
best regards Peter OZ1LPR
Hi Scott,
thanks for your comments.
Unfortunately, it will be probably more expensive to ship the unit from Europe to the US and back for a professional repair, than to replace the complete 83620 locally.
The Module A24s only purpose is to generate the frequencies under 2 GHz, so for Opt. H03, it probably would just be left out. A24 basically looks like a metal brick with some connectors.
It's quite self-contained except LO, RF, Mod in/out and some control-port. As far as I know, it can be replaced without performing an excessive new cal.
So an easy replace, if the module is working.... :)
I guess, I will open the module during my free time on Christmas (hoping not to kill it completely) and check for "obvious" errors. No power is at least something that's easy to trace with an "RF-glowstick" like the 11096B.
Let's hope it is not some funny effect inside a PLL.

Martin

Another quick thought
Both the 83620¡¯s and the 8340¡¯s came with a H03 option which limited the low end to 2 Ghz,? ? I¡¯ve never found any documents on what that option did besides limit low end.
Since you have no output/errors below 2ghz you may have a module from a H03 instrument.

On older DOS fdisk.exe versions there was a fdisk /MBR option, if I remember correctly. There are also other tools to activate the partition you want to boot from, using a pc with the disk in question as a second disk connected.
