Re: hp laser printer repair group?

LOL at your last statement, Ed!? Shake that toner loose!

Years ago I worked at a start-up company that had an HP laser printer.? It worked fine, but I think the paper bail came apart.? One of our technicians was pretty handy, and he bolted it back together with some nuts and bolts we had lying around.? AFAIK, it was still running fine when that company bit the dust (a whole story in itself) about 15 years ago.

I've owned and maintained many printers over the years, and found that it's a crap-shoot finding detailed info about the innards. There's some stuff out there on various makes and models, sometimes found in discussion groups, or from people that sell the inks and toners and such. After enough experience and disappointment with HP, Epson, Canon, et al, I long ago decided that Brother brand printers were the best for low cost, long term reliable running, and maintenance. They have been my favorites for at least a decade, and the only brand I would buy.?

About a year or so ago, my old HL-4040CN color laser crapped out, with some error code indicating the problem. It turned out that I had a pdf of the entire factory/shop service manual (several hundred pages) for it, that I had stumbled upon years earlier, while looking for something else. I dug up the manual, and determined that the laser scan motor had seized up. The manual has all the info needed to diagnose and take everything apart and replace modules, but I went a step beyond - I took the motor apart, cleaned it out, re-lubed the bearing, and it was back in business. I think normally, the entire optical scan unit (probably more expensive than a whole new printer) would have to be replaced.

More recently, it crapped out again, this time due to failures in the belt unit and other disposables. I can't really complain about this, since these consumable parts had never been replaced, and had run way past their normal life expectancy. At this point in the life of a printer, you have to weigh the cost of the replacement items versus getting a whole new printer. I decided to retire the 4040 and junked it out, even though it probably could have gone for a few more years. In its place, I have parked a HL-3040CN of similar vintage, that I've kept in reserve. When this one craps out, I'll get a brand new Brother whatever color laser. I don't know if I'll find a manual too - I guess I'll see when I get there.

Anyway, luck with keeping printers going and finding info is very variable, but since they have become such commodity items, it's not a big deal to attempt simple repairs even without much info to go on. There's not that much to lose if you make it worse. Sometimes even banging on stuff - like the the old TVs from way back - can make a difference.

So far - no hint of a glow, even in complete darkness. There's no beam finder control; there are position trimpots on the front which didn't bring anything into view. Verified (with power off) filament continuity (temporarily disconnect filament lines from HV board to CRT). No sign of residual light during power down. Also, sometimes when I turn on old-style oscilloscopes I hear a "crackling" sort of sound (as the HV comes up); no sign of this here. Status LEDs are lit except for the LED reflecting the 158V output of the display section power regulator - the test point where that LED is located is showing ~168V (supposed to be 158V.)

I'll try downloading it again tonight. I can't use my work laptop because it will encrypt the file.

After sending the message last night, I finally got a message stating it wasn't allowing me to download because of some message stating? it's been accessed and/or downloaded too many times recently; and to try again at another point.

Also, I used a better power connection to that adapter (the 3.5" to 2.5") in case power was intermittent during booting. Unfortunately Windows is still not loading. I keep getting the same message: PXE-E61 media test failure, followed by: PKE-M0F exiting Intel PXE ROM

Re: Agilent 54831M

It's a 52GB file compress to 23GB. I know it's huge. It took me several hours to upload it.?

I don't remember what is good and what is not. So it's hard for me to select particular things. When I had the unit, I had a backup drive with the original image, but when I sold it, I gave the drive to the buyer. If you can't download it, I can try to upload it an other way. Do you have suggestions?

I have already zipped up the files and sent it to KO4BB (Didier) and another person.? That other person had no issues with it. Let's see what Didier does with it first; I have not heard back from him yet.

It's not like this program will get continually used by the same person.? It only needs to be run once and then you have the keyword and are done.? Even if you can't run a VB program, it would be trivial to ask someone to do it for you.

Re: Agilent 54831M

The slow reaction might originate from the file size. When I click the link, it says:? I (23G) is too large for Google to scan for viruses. Would you still like to download this file? , assuming that 23G is the file size. It might indeed take almost forever to download this file...
@JulienM: could you please check the actual file size? Thanks!

Re: HP3580A Repair- Spurious Signal

Hi Bruce,?
When I do an Ebay search it only shows one, that comes with 3 other units, while the price for the 4 items isnt bad, the postage to me in Australia for such a heavy package (of the 4 plugins) is way out of my budget. Its possible that other 8556s that are listed do not show up for me as they problably dont have international postage. (just a guess).
Thanks for your reply. Steve.

No. What's criminal is OSs that are susceptible to BS like that being on a public network. The moment an upstream connection starts arbitrarily filtering traffic is the moment it ceases being a real network connection. End of story.

Re: HP 853A - no CRT display at all - troubleshooting help needed

Dave:

I have a couple of these myself. I suggest checking the deflection amplifier final stage resistors -- they went way off-value/open on both of my units. Check both horizontal and vertical. Also - check ALL of the high-voltage multi-megohm resistors associated with the various CRT grid voltages. These are right at the CRT itself. These commonly go open in older units and will lead to no display. You may need to buy a 10 or 20 megohm resistor to put in parallel so you can measure the higher resistance parts (i.e. above 20 megohms). Generally you will see the same failures over and over if you fix enough of these older HP displays.

One last thing - makes sure your lower-voltage DC rails are all good - I had one of these fail on a unit as well. At least make sure the status LEDs are all lit.

BR,

Ken

Subject: [HP-Agilent-Keysight-equipment] HP 853A - no CRT display at all - troubleshooting help needed

I have HP 853A mainframe with HP 8557B (the 75 ohm version) plug-in. The 853A CRT has no display light output at all, at any intensity/focus setting. If I plug an external scope set to X-Y display into the rear X-Y outputs, the analyzer plug-in appears to be functioning normally (and the same plug-in works fine in another 182 mainframe.)

I've downloaded manual 00853-90010 and checked DC voltage test points on A3 (all were in spec), then went to section 5-13, and with a Tektronix P6015A 40 kV 1000:1 scope probe, I verified HV cathode (test point A4TP1) is close to the voltage marked on the module (-2467 volts). Step 5-13-8 it tells me to measure A6TP2 (which I think is a typo; there is a test point on A4 called A4TP2 and after this test point is checked, instructions tell me to put the cover of the HV section back on.) A4TP2 measures 27.3 volts at any setting of the front panel intensity control (the text in section 5-13 step 8 specifies 30.0 +/- 0.2 volts, and tells me what to do if the voltage is too high, but not too low.) I tried setting the 8557B to manual sweep to get a dot on the display, but no light seen. As the manual at this point anticipates that the CRT should be emitting light (and is mostly worried about too much intensity), I think I'm not looking in the right place.

Any idea where to look next?

Thanks!

Re: ROM / EEPROM firmware dump

Nothing disgusting about it. 99.9999% vbs traffic is malware. It¡¯d be criminal not to block it. All you need to do is to zip it up if you really want to send it. Easy really. But in this case it would be a visual studio project with multiple files, not a solitary vbs file.

Cheers, Kuba

Check several other voltages and all will lead to no display.
X or Y axis way off screen
Blanking hard blanked off.
I have run into all of these and the great news is its easy to find the issue when these are really bad.
Also sometimes its useful to turn off all lights in a dark room any hint of a glow? Top bottom left right brightness all teh way up.
Is there a beam finder?

Yes Fedron; but, there are other rubber cleaners/restorers. Do the others work as well as Fedron?
The other cleaners/restorers have different chemical ingredients.
Years ago, I heard something bad about Fedron (can't remember... maybe its was carcinogenic?)... or for some reason we couldn't buy it in the colonies...at the time.
The printer techs loved it, but were down to secreting bottles of it in their kits.
Maybe they changed the chemical composition of Fedron?
On a more picayune note, its D-Limonene (for Dexto Limonene, the biologically preferred enantiomer of the molecule.)
