Hints on removing burned tantalum residue

Not directly HP related but this is where the knowledge is.
I am starting to repair an IFR-1200S that had an incident.

A 150 uF 15V tantalum went up in smoke.
What is the best solvent to remove the residue on the rest of the PCB. Isopropyl does not take all of it off? Want to get it all clean before I replace parts and continue the repair.
Thanks
Dave?

Re: Option 030 in HP 3708A Noise and Interference Test Set?

Yeah. I think if you can track down the Japanese manual, that might solve the dilemma.

Or a see if the any of the HP Scotland guys on the list can remember what it's all about. :^)

I was thinking something to do with Japanese market as you say Andy but there's no mention in the manual from the Keysight website. Maybe I should try to track down a Japanese manual...
There is an option to have some preset reference tone frequencies altered to user specification (with no corresponding option number shown on page 72 of the manual), but the front panel labels look normal, unless they weren't relabelled...
Once the unit arrives in the next day or two, I'll have to measure that to see.

Hi Jarod, me old cobber,

Maybe it's a peculiarity for the Japanese market? Some sort of filter/freq option?

I remember seeing a big 'master list' of HP options somewhere recently, but fort the life of me, I can't find it now. I was hoping to find the info in there maybe.
Thanks!

Anyone out there fix a partially working 334A I need desperately to get it up and running!

I have an Hp 334A that powers on and appears to function partially but I¡¯m not sure what all could be wrong with it. If anyone fixes these units at a reasonable price I would be interested in having it put back in top notch shape with a good calibration. I restore vintage hifi and I need to get it up and going as quickly as possible.?

I¡¯d like to know if anyone out there can fix a somewhat working 334a and about what would it cost?

I have one of these meters, it took a small tumble. Now it needs a potentiometer and resistor and fix the cracked circuit board. Shame, it¡¯s a really nice meter.?

I've contacted some sellers who have had options set wrong because ebay screwed with them when they were entering the listing and they didn't see the defaults moved.

Most change the listing for me.? (have so far had the sellers both willing to do so, and have ebay change the option).

Mostly for changing off "local pickup" which happened inadvertantly in both cases)

If the "Seller" has no time to deal with a "Buyer", is he really the type of vendor

you want to do business with ??

?

If it's difficult to communicate with him now, what will it be like if you need to

contact him after the sale.

The seller is legit, honest, knows RF and microwaves and has a good stock of items. I have known him for many years, and last saw him a month ago at at an electronics swap meet, where he has been selling for many years.
I have no idea why he is unresponsive, but I know how to contact him. Hopefully he is not ill, during this difficult time.

Re: Optiion upgrade HP 8753C/B

I believe that if you don't change the hardware jumper then the codes you enter are not programmed into the EEPROM.

The new option will revert when you cycle the power on the 8753C. So you can use that to experiment.

Cheers,
Roger

Anyway, after today's browsing I think??I found my answer.

I don't know specifically for that model, but your symptoms sure sound like a bad SRAM chip to me. Do you know if the self-test does a full test of the memory?

Re: HP 54720A PSU fault

Don't cut into the PCB unless you need to - make some careful leakage measurements first. I have seen plenty of blackened HP / Agilent PCBs that are still good insulators and work fine once the damaged components are replaced. The old brown phenolic PCBs that were used in tube-based HP gear from the 1960's and earlier (and are still used in some cheap consumer gear) would become very conductive when blackened, but the modern fiberglass (FR4 etc.) material is much more resistant to that effect.

HP54603B Software Gremlins

Hi HP Experts,

the HP54603B is a mid-90s digital storage scope (compact and nice besides the
missing ?-metal shield for the CRT). Mine has the HP54657A Measurement/Storage
Module installed. Most of the time it works flawlessly BUT there are
reproduceable problems with trace memory functions:
- Storing screen data to memories 4 and up (nonvolatile) seem to work fine
? until the device is switched off
- On the next power up, the recall (or preview) of traces 4++ leads either to
? a completely messed up screen display or a hard system reset (with all
? memory data wiped out)
- Trace memories 1 to 3 are ok

So the questions are:
- Is this a known problem ?
- Is there a firmware update available for the scope and/or the storage module ?
- Does at least a workaround exist to avoid loss of memory data ?

The software version of the scope is V.1.2 and "Yes", I've done the power-on
reset (module initialization) several times with no effect. The selftest functions
pass without error messages.

Many thanks for advice, help or solutions

Regards (& 73 :-)??? Andreas DG7RBN
