Re: HP 5233L and HP3450A

Thanks for all the replies here is my start up/restoration plan for the brace of them

  1. get schematic
  2. study the above
  3. open
  4. inspect for any defects
  5. clean if required
  6. identify and fix any found defects
  7. pull cards recording where each was removed?
  8. clean contacts with detoxit gold and detail inspection for defects
  9. fix all found defects
  10. disconnect power supply?
  11. Ohm out all power supplies
  12. fix any found defects
  13. slow start up with dim bulb and amperage check.
  14. check all output voltages (ripple, quality etc)?
  15. find and fix if any found defects
  16. 5 hour burn in with observation in case something goes south?
  17. Once finished replace cards?
  18. re-check that cards where replaced correctly
  19. full power start up with dim-bulb (80% rated wattage)
  20. if it passes basic test carry on otherwise go back and find fix defects
  21. After pass procced with disassembly and cleaning front panel displays etc
  22. after cleaning put back-together
  23. calibrate if necessary or possible
  24. put on bench/rack?
  25. enjoy?

We lost the will to live, and bought another lead ourselves, as we
needed a working instrument.

I'm sure there are a lot of "Good" Calibration Houses out there, but the
majority of manufactures own, and plenty of third party houses are not
worth the cost of the paperwork.? Especially where equipment is
manufactured "offshore", and they just shift boxes without unpacking,
running up and checking the product actually works to specification
before sending to the customer.

Frankly.? If you "Need" to accurately measure something.? Do it with at
least two different methods, or instruments of different types.?
Especially where RF power is concerned, and significant harmonics are
present!

And first verify the instruments against again at least two known good
references.

Regards to All.

Dave (G8KBV)? Recalibrating the house, by moving all the furniture

Yes, but get him a third watch and he can perform the 3-cornered hat
method; thus allowing him to not know the time, with better certainty.

I tried a 1 uF cap and it does measure and the value is around 0.95 uF that but a 150 pF and 470 pF cap just resulted in the range LEDs flickering in succession. No reading. ?

FS -hp- 200AB working well

Judging by the enormous numbers of messages about the 200CD recently, there must be some interest in these classic instruments.? I have a nice working 200AB, fairly late model (1969 ish from the serial) that I have no further use for, if anyone is interested, make me an offer.? It's heavy, so shipping is likely to be expensive.

I have four of the 20V 20A versions.? The Humming/Buzzing I think is mainly due to the Thyristor Pre Regulator in these PSUs.? This maintains the input to the Linear Regulator to just a bit more than the drop out so little heat is generated in the Pass Transistors.?

The elves have been busy, and there are all kinds of interesting items uploaded including BITE indicators, Hp/Tek knob assortments, and great first/cheap instruments in the surprises section.

Hopefully you will find some fun stuff to look at this weekend. There's also a spectracom 8140 10MHz distribution amp I have modified with its own OCXO so it's a self-contained bench standard that has 5 outputs. Look in the CAL section.

Think of it as electronics trick or treat.

8922M can it output FM from the signal gen,

Hi i have a good working 8922M i can output AM using the af gen to modulate the rf signal generator, is there a way to make the signal generator output FM dev,
The unit reads FM dev and it does demodulate FM, it would be great if i could make it output FM
? It does have the gpib port fitted, has anyone made any pc software to do this ?
Thanks Dave 2E0DMB

Re: HP8620C Fan removal.

As it happens, some HP 8620 series were equipped with the very same Siemens fan motor that Tek used in their 465-family of 'scopes.
A lot has been written about their behaviour and overhaul, see Tekscopes groups.io.

Raymond

Ah!..? Interesting, as I have a scavenged Tek fan motor assembly from that era...? Somewhere...

Having worked at Tek during that time for some 3 years, I'm well aware of some of the odd behaviour they could show.? Usually down to the transistor array chip, or the thermistor partially failing.

I'll report back when I've dived in, but lots of other non tech' priorities first, sadly.

Thanks Raymond.
