HP 8592b

Hi all, I am reading many posts as an amateur for many years and trying to understand. I am a Medical Doctor and just a hobbiest.
I bought an HP 8592b SA 1 year ago and It was working and all calibration procedures was successful.
I powered it up 1 week ago and got error 0030 and the battery was almost 0v and changed it today. But first the monitor not worked properly digged web and?
after -2001 hz procedure the display occured with? same method the cal amp and freq passed. But the YIG cal is unsuccesfull because of lost comb signal.
As I said I am just an amateur?cannot find any solution. Thanks for kindly reading this message.

I'm in, 100%, that's a fine idea.

If Pete does it again, he will be both unsubscribed and banned. He has been warned about this before, more than once.

Hey Martin,

Here's a nice video of a gentleman diagnosing and then fixing 1st mixer failure on an 8590A:?. If you have similar symptoms, maybe this'll help?

Having repaired the PSU and overcome my issue with corrupt NVRAM, I'm now trying to run the self calibration routines. The frequency routines run OK, but the amplitude routines fail very quickly. Testing the analyser with a variety of sources shows that it's very insensitive, unable to discriminate a signal below about 10MHz, improving very slightly as the frequency inceases to 200MHz, but still 70dB too low. I'm having to use the 8590E manual for the fault finding process as I'm unable to locate the service manual for the B; I do have the CLIP for the B version, although there do seem to be differences on my unit, e.g. the backup battery is on the main board and is AA rather than the A123 battery on the memory board indicated in the CLIP. The service manual calls for the HP IF Test Module which isn't something I can lay my hands on, making it rather tricky to fault find signal level issues, especially as the CLIP doesn't have signal levels marked in many places.
Does anyone have the correct service manual for the 8590B or can tell me what signal levels to expect at various locations?

Many of us have stuff like the support kit that is the subject of this

Re: HP5342A counter A3 Gate failure

Richard

My proposed solution to replacement of U4 the EECL Flip flop with the AND gate used for gating the 0 -500MHz counter input.

to use a MC10EL31 D type, flip flop as divide by 2 with NOT Q connected to D and the input to CLK.

To use the SET function of the D type to gate the flip flop. to provide the LDIR GATE function

This should work the transition time to a SET or non SET state is 200psec,? one clock period at 500MHz is 20nsec.

The MC10EL31 is a SO8 package so room for two devices in the same space as a single DIP16

The SET function requires a logic high and the gate pulse from Q4 is logic high, this needs to be logic low to allow division during the gate pulse.

To provide the -ve going gate pulse, modify the Timebase board A17.

cut the track from U17b pin 14 to R8 , link R8 to U17b pin 15 this should provide an inverted LDIR GATE to the A3 board.

The Q and NOT Q outs from the MC10EL31 go to the ECL to TTL converter

I suspect it will be easier to remove U1 on A3 and replace that with another MC10EL31? and bypass the EECL to ECL converter as well

You were, in fact, threatening. Deciding not to sell it because you won't get what you think it's worth isn't a problem, and that's nobody's business but yours.

However, the "scrap it is" part was inappropriate and uncalled for, and your meaning was plain and transparent to everyone here.

In case MY meaning wasn't plain, everyone here knew damn well exactly what you meant when you typed that. Back-pedaling and trying to dismiss it as an innocent bit of chat isn't going to work this time. And, given your history, I'm willing to bet the sob story about your health and how much you have to pay someone to pack up your outbound boxes isn't going to be met with much sympathy here.

You've done this many times, you've been doing it for years, you're notorious for it, everywhere, and everyone knows it. The number of private messages I receive about your posts is such that it raises my already-high blood pressure even higher.

Don't do it again. There will be no further warnings.

You needn't refrain from posting, but you must refrain from posting extortionist emails.

A lot of people like them. They just don't seem to break all that much. Mine needed a minor calibration tweak when I got it years ago, but has worked flawlessly ever since.

Re: 8590B low sensitivity problem

Richard

Martin? don't forget you can also check the sections of the attenuator as well, disconnect it from the mixer and terminate with a 50ohms,

each section of the attenuator will look close to 50 ohms .

If you have an RF millivolt meter or another SA , you can easily check it, but if you don't? you can resort to the good old multimeter,DMM.

a section blatted with too much RF will read higher, BTW when I say good old multimeter I was NOT referring to the hi ohms range on a Avo 8,

the current from modern DMMs is very low anyway.

You can probably repair damage to the attenuator if you find some, the 8590 was built to a reduce cost and performance
