I'd suggest that in any SA case where the response falls off greatly toward the low end, that you have a bad/intermittent connection in the RF cabling or parts. If anything goes bad and opens up, you lose the DC/LF content, while there's still enough capacitance in place (just due to proximity - that's all it takes) to carry the RF at the upper end. The basic amplitude versus frequency envelope you see is a high-pass filter of the residual capacitance against the 50 ohms system Z.
The badness can be anywhere, in any connection or component. The most likely though, tend to be mechanically related, like contacts inside connectors, and switches such as in RF relays and attenuators, for instance. Sometimes you can cure or at least diagnose "switch" type problems by exercising them lots of times through the possible states. A good strong input signal can help too, to clean contacts. You can use any signal that's well below the maxim input power rating - even a FG or DC, if your RF sources don't have enough juice. In the case of step attenuators especially, you may need plenty of power to effectively hit the deepest/furthest back pad sections.
The recent observation that it seemed to be working again for no particular reason, then failed again, but slightly differently, is highly indicative of a marginal contact of some sort. You can expect such variable results until you find the true cause. Good luck.

Re: low amplitude readings below 10MHz on a 8591E
Gr Kees, The link is needed to pass the CAL for various reasons, the 600mhz and 10Mhz are tested as well as the attenuator output and the YTO output. I also use my trusted Marconi 2019a ?-usually within ?1db or so of the HP8594e across its range.. The YTO is very strong but that¡¯s good, it should last a long time. Re: E4407B option AYX Fast Sweep Time Domain
Hi,
I worked on it today, and I found the fault: two op amps were defective. I was able to test them out of circuit for confirmation. The problem of not having a picture on the screen was mainly caused by the fact that the DC voltage applied to the signal was not within the range of the ADC AD9050, the 10 output bits of the ADC were all at logic 0. I ordered the parts, but I'm not sure if there are other defective parts, I will make this first replacement, I will see for the continuation. I am not sure if the ADC is not damaged, removing these two circuits and retesting the board, I saw noise on the screen because the voltages at the ADC inputs are identical and in the normal range of the AD9050 component. However, the noise had a high amplitude...I will be soon if there is still a problem.
Thank you for responding.

Re: HP 8656B display issue
I would suspect an IC in the IF A3 video section. It sounds like a stuck bit. Part of the A3 section deals with the text and graphics. I believe that it is probably in the A3A1 ->A3A4 (video memory brd.). Check the ribbon cable connects to this A3 section, the traces on the A3 mother board. Do read the A3 section theory of operation, then read the individual A3 brd. that the section theory of operation points to. I think you will be able to isolate the problem board inside of 2 hrs., then localize to a circuit area. An oscilloscope will show TTL activity and proper levels on the data lines. Any levels other than +5V and 0V (or acceptable TTL levels) on data lines will be a problem. Do check the power supply lines on each of the A3 section brds. as each brd. has filter caps on each brd. - tantalum in most cases. HP used a distributed filter cap approach to their power supply design.

Ok, it failed again but it is better then before 500Khz@0dBm? is -50dBm which is better than previous < -70dBm
Gr. Kees
P.S. strange .......

Ok, Now I am truly baffled. It works now.? 1Mhz : 0dBm gives with center freq 1 Mhz and span 1 Mhz a peak of 9dBm met 10 dB attenuation. When pulling and wiggling?the cable it goes down and up. Looks like a bad connection with the Marconi. At least that's what I think.?

Nothing special in a 1122A. Difficult bit is the connectors, You can use Binder 719s if you are careful plugging in. Electrically a 50VA torodial with 2x 15V secondaries a bridge, two 2200uF caps, a LM7912 with a 1N4001 in the common to jack it up to 12.6V and a LM7815 will do the job.

I must be missing something... Aren't you already going to: "poke a soldering iron around in the A16 pcb..." when you replace the battery? Hand copying data onto a list, and then back from the list into the instrument sounds like a great place to make a few mistakes... Or, so it seems to me, as one who can effortlessly type at a rate of over 40 errors per minute. -Chuck Harris On Wed, 22 Mar 2023 17:45:42 -0000 "Mike Lockley via groups.io" <mikelockley@...> wrote: > As it is so simple to restore the data after the battery is removed > ,I personally would not like to poke a soldering iron around in the > A16 pcb. Re: low amplitude readings below 10MHz on a 8591E
Chuck, With the greatest respect, I soldered my new battery into my 8594e with the power off. Mine had the newer 3.7 volt disc battery which meant that you needed to separate the battery pcb from the processor pcb before the work can be done. The amount of time taken to do this completely downs the processor pcb. The restore procedure is well documented and if you have written down (the only way) the flatness and correction data beforehand all goes well.
best regards Mike g4wam
