HP6060A questions

Just received and works great. But a couple of questions for the group:

(1) Is it possible to add some sort of backlight to the LCD?
(2) My binding posts are in the back. How hard is it to move these to the front?

Thanks in advance.

Mark

Re: Storage Cap Ripple

Regarding the Off-Lock YTO loop, I suggest you to look at C7 on A20.? This capacitor is known to go dry and create the ugly YTO unlock problem.? A nice gentlemen create a YouTube video about this problem.? I was lucky, as it fixed my 8566B problem.? Any day, I prefer to be lucky than smart ?

@Jinxie, I did not mean to discourage you by saying that this repair is impossible without very accurate equipment that you do not have; this is not necessarily the case, and I myself have fixed many pieces of equipment with surprisingly inadequate gear. What I did want to convey to you is the fact that the 8566B is an extremely sophisticated piece of equipment that requires a precision mindset if one wants to achieve 100% success in troubleshooting it. Assuming that the 22V rail is ¡°good enough¡± when it measures +1V, and the specified allowed deviation is at most 50 times less (+20mV), did not look like a promising start.

To make my point even more concrete, as Matt said, one can sometimes get rid of the YTO unlock error by performing the ¡°13. Sweep, DAC, and Main Coil Driver Adjustments¡±. One of the steps in this procedure calls for adjusting the ¡°scan reset offset¡± voltage to zero with an accuracy of +-500 micro-volts.
In other words, you can not assure a successful repair without accurate gear and mindset, but you may still be lucky enough and be able to fix it with an accurate mindset and less accurate gear.

As for your comment that ¡°no way can I meet those kind of standards...¡±, I do not believe that this is necessarily the case given that you also say that ¡°I have a *ton* of high-end test gear here..¡± --- even if it is all vintage with unknown calibration status. For example, my experience with a few used HP 3456A meters is that they are within specs, or very close to it, many years after being last calibrated. Also, even if out-of-spec, their errors are quite consistent and they still have tons of resolution which is what counts most in this case. In other words, your 34566B will function perfectly well if it is adjusted with all voltages consistently off by the same small error: the relative voltages at different points in the circuit are more important than their absolute values (within reason of course).

Finally, if you are lucky, the problem may be simply a bad electrolytic capacitor on A20, A19 or A21. Given that you have an LCR and ESR meters, why don't you start there first?

Re: HP 1727A CRO: Problem with the vertical output amplifier.

Thanks for the suggestions, I will look into it further. I should have mentioned that the vertical deflection amplitude is off, as displayed on the screen. I don't know weather that is because of an adjustment or the vertical amp, so a problem here would explain some of it.

I didn't realize the scales were different on the plot, rookie mistake.

I am at 07.74 on Firmware, so I should be ok. ?

Re: HP 8594E upgrade CRT to LCD

Stuart not to throw stones. But I have seen a fair number of tek lcd displays that have gone to heck. Normally something like crystal leakage. (I just made that up). I can think of things like the tek TDR 1503 non crt versions yet the crt versions still work.
Just saying we hobbiest users use the gear far past any expectation that it should work.

According to the compatibility matrix ONLY 85090 series ECAL are supported by the 8753 series analyzers , the N469X kits can be used however with the 8719/20/22 series but in any instance the 85097B is needed and the VNA must have the appropriate FW revision

The 8753e should also work with some newer ECAL units(such as the n4691a/b) but finding the unique cable they require is tough. I was not able to locate one when I was searching.

?

the E will work just as well as the ES/ET and even the D will work but the D only works if you have the flash based CPU board , in any case the analyzer must have FW 7.68 or higher

Re: eCal & HP-8753E

no , the older VNA required the use of either a 85060C controller or a 85097A PC interface ,? there were also some FW requirements on the 8753 as far as i remember?
on a side note i want to caution you on ECAL kits , having used ECAL on both Rohde and Agilent units i have to warn you that ECAL units are very easy to damage and extremly sensitive to ESD?

i have a 8341B that has SN 2804A however my 8510C testset requires a source with SN 2812A so i am trying to figure out what changes so i can possibly upgrade my 8341B?

Hi Roy,

In your subscription to this group, go to Advanced and you will see the maximum attachment size option, below:

¡
Max Attachment Size

?? ?? ?? ?? ? Unlimited ?? ?? ?? ?? ? 0 (no attachments) ?? ?? ?? ?? ? 100KB ?? ?? ?? ?? ? 500KB ?? ?? ?? ?? ? 5MB ? ? ?? ?? ?

Maximum size of attachments sent to you in emails. For attachments larger than this size, links to retrieve them will be provided instead.

You can control the attachments which are sent to you.

Also, you can change Digest or Summary rather than All Messages, which allows you to choose individual messages.

Take care,

Re: eCal & HP-8753E

I'd be interested in the power supply if it is available.

Cheers!

Quoting Steve Draper <steve@...>:

Get an 85097 as others have mentioned. An ECAL is totally worth it. I used
them with my 8753e when I had it. I actually still have the 85097 and
cables if you're interested.

pin 13: 27.77V

Most likely U1 is good. You have one Vbe drop from pins 3/6 to pins 4/5 which is correct and collectors at pins 12/13 are balanced.

In the plots you attached I thought there was an imbalance in pin 4/5 voltages but the scales are different and they match. Input section looks fine.?

From a brief analysis of the output stage, pin 13 voltage swing looks too high (2.4Vpp), even pin 12 swing is high . U2 and surrounding components look like a transimpedance stage and should keep pin 12/13 swings very small. Given the signal swings, U2 is not doing its function, but it could be because of bad components around it so it doesn't mean U2 is bad for sure. I recommend looking around U2.?

DC voltages at pins 2/3/5/6/7 may give clues.?

Re: Storage Cap Ripple

Just keeping the 8566B in good condition in case I want to sell it.

But it's a good point - my Trimble GPSDO probably has pretty good phase noise and I probably could use it as the reference for the 8566B.

I should see how the NOS OCXO in the 8566B is doing.? The one I mentioned below is just sitting on the bench powered by a bench power?supply.

The OCXO in my 8566B was 75 Hz out and died shortly thereafter...

I found a source of NOS OCXOs - Quest Components part?OSC92-51B-10MHZ fitted my particular 8566B.? They claim to still have a few.? They'll cost $25 (minimum line item) plus shipping... a bargain compared to other sources.

I bought some extras and have been checking them out.? The latest has settled down to 9.999 999 97 MHz compared to my GPSDO after running for a couple of months.

If Quest run out, drop me a note...

Re: HP 8594E upgrade CRT to LCD

Beautiful story. I avoid buying any equipment with CRT displays.?

When I got my IFR 1600 service monitor, I got the version with LCD rather than CRT; 6 pounds lighter and the display will outlast me.

This is a mailing list, not some web thingy. At least that's the way *I* access it, my mail program hits the groups.io servers and downloads this stuff...

While DSL was at one time considered "broadband", it's a poor performer compared to what some folks do with cable, etc. Unfortunately this rural location doesn't provide a whole lot of choices.

The point here is that when one of you guys attaches a multi-megabyte file to one of these emails, I get to download it whether I want it or not. Which ties up my connectivity until the download is done.

I don't mind the occasional pictures and such, but those big files are something else!

I'd appreciate it if you guys could simply put such large files where somebody can get at them, and provide a link, for those that want it, rather than forcing those of us who get things this way to download for no immediate benefit.
