My work place had to pay tax on spare parts over a limit kept for future possible use. How crazy is that? Buy a new part and pay tax then pay a yearly tax based on your inventory!?

Unfortunatly ebay have us over a barrel to some extent. My personal opinion is they don't want small qty private sellers. Probably becuse a number of them cause too many claims. You have to use "managed payments" in the UK now. Ieven if there is no holding period you still have to wait a few days for the payment to come through. I now put? 3 or 4 day shipping time on my listings so I at least have the postage cost in my account.

The worst thing I have had is an item sold to europe and not only did ebay charge me an additional international sales fee, they charged the seller 20% VAT and then charged me 10% comission on the VAT! As far as I can tell as a private individual selling a used item VAT should not have been charged in the first place.

Unfortunatly none of the alternative marketplaces have the exposure that ebay has.

In my opinion, and allegedly, I had a poor experience with the former.
Additionally, IME, and allegedly, shipping units to the U.S. (and from the U.S.) is a monumental torment to one's derriere.?
And without a contract, doing so can present significant financial, and legal prospects.

Yes. But in the OP,? #122513, the 3rd condition was stated as "The account have more than ?165 total sales."?
That's British Pounds?

Re: 8350B *restoration adventure?*

Hi there!

Some updates:

Yesterday the big monster transformer, once belong to a 8566B, arrived. After some isolation and resistance measures,I checked it's outputs and deliver the correct voltages. So hooray for the UK seller: fast, kind and cheap.

Before squeeze my brain on how the hell I can install that transformer on the 8350B, want to power all the rails and measure the aprox current draws, so I've arranged a setup with the monster (+5V, -40V and +20V rails), another center tap adapter (±10V) and my bench supply (±15V). I fitted a dc pc fan in the back of the unit to give some cool during initial start up.

As you can see in the photos, the unit starts successfully: no magic smoke, front panel lamp test OK, error 001 (no plugin). Looks promising, I must get a plugin to test real current consumption, but for now I'll measure the rails one by one to be sure of no abnormal drawings. Maybe try to draw some current from the plugin connector with my electronic load. I'll post the current draw data tomorrow :)

Looking forward on adapt the 9100-4068 transformer, I noticed:
?- first, the unit is bigger that the old. And I say much bigger :D. The only way is changing the filter capacitors for newer and smaller units, to gain room for the transformer.
?- second, the secondary windings provide proper voltages for most of the rails (perfect for +20, +5 and -40) but the rest needs center tap for create negative rails. This is a problem. I think it will cause redesign the A6 rectifier board at least, if not the A7 regulator board too. Also the original 9100-4603 has 5 secondary, and this one has 4. My idea is to hook too small current drawer rails into the same secondary, given that the 8566B transformer is most bigger (and powerful, hopefully)
Opinions? :D?

Ruben

Synthesized sources like the ESG series have a tough time doing continuous sweeps since the frequency is set by digital dividers. Even modern network analyzers, which would be a better tool for alignment work in many cases, operate in steps. Are steps really a problem for what you are doing?

?

Some of the older HP sweepers might be a better choice if you can find one in good shape at what you consider a reasonable cost.

Depending on the span and center frequency you want, you might be able to use the ESG44xx series wideband FM modulation to do a continuous sweep, albeit limited in span.

You can use the internal modulation source and select a slow ramp waveform which would allow an FM deviation up to 40MHz.? By externally driving the modulation input I've been been able to obtain even more deviation for a wider sweep.

Re: Selling experience, sorry OT again

I thought they changed years ago to charging fees on the item price?+ shipping. People used to sell stuff for $0.05?+ $100 shipping to get around paying fees - ebay didn't take very long to figure that one out!

I'm not sure if the fees are based on the $100 sale or the total including $35.97 postage.
If on the total a $5 sale with $50 shipping could actually lose you money. Ebay would take about $10.45

Yes I totally understand and I can see that the system detected that the account was a casual seller on site. As for your reference, for this not to happen in the future, you need meet these three (3) requirements: You have to be actively selling on site for more than 90 days. The account have more than 25 domestic transactions. The account have more than ?165 total sales. Once you have met these three (3) requirements the funds will never be placed on hold again.

What is more they took 20% and I have to fight to get my funds which I have not yet seen.Maybe they hope some people will forget.
I am looking for an alternative to ebay. Has anyone used Bonanza? What are you guys using? I just started using test-equip-trader.
What about Paypal? Any suggestions or are they still reasonable to use to buy and sell.

I have noticed that some sellers now insist on only accepting PayPal, which might be the result of this policy.

Are those 3 requirements for UK sellers? I have not seen that requirement stated here in the US.
I've been selling on eBay since 2005 but have not listed anything for a year now. I just recently signed up for their Managed Payments, and will see if they hold my payments. I've been told that even though you sold in the past, with Managed Payments if you haven't sold recently (whatever "recently" is defined as), they treat you like a brand new seller and hold payments.
I'm not at all thrilled to use eBay but for the things I sell, its the only game in town so to speak.

If the fuse is blowing due to the crowbar being triggered, the fuse speed is immaterial since the crowbar stays shorted until the current stops, however long that takes.

?

My installation had more noise than the gas tube but still well within spec.

I discovered I could cancel the remaining drift almost completely by adding a diode in series with CR10.? YMMV.

Re: E8285A dead

Just posting an update for the archives...

I replaced 29 capacitors on the power supply board: 28 electrolytic and one tantalum. Also replaced primary and secondary memory backup batteries as preventive maintenance.

On the first boot it came up error code 0040 on the self diagnostics. The service manual says that is Real-Time Clock failure, Memory board. The error appeared just the one time. It has come up all self tests passed on subsequent boots. I will assume that was just some clock confusion due to replacing the memory battery. I didn't even know it had a real time clock but will look into that.

All functions seem to be working normally.
