Repairing flat high voltage ribbon used in HP displays

Hi,

I've a HP 1331A XY with a major fault being that this ribbon has begun
delaminating (a few inches from the end far from CRT) and arcs
dramatically - I am assuming because the insulator is now air and not
the laminated plastic.

Arcing point is just behind the bend in front here:

One trace is at 7.5kV post-accelerator potential (after the tripler),
and the other two appear to be storage mesh and collector mesh (+158v)
potentials. (Same ribbon was used in 1335A)

Has anyone successfully repaired one of these?

I'm thinking Corona Dope might be usable here. But it looks like
whatever adhesive was in the strip, is beginning to fail, potentially
along the entire length.

Any insights appreciated.

Free older DRAM and SRAM parts, plus mysterious National 07AN smd parts

walter shawlee

I found a small stash of older memory parts, all safely anti-static stored:
MK4516N-15 (8)
MCM4164BP15 (16)
AM9101PC/P2101-2 (2)
MBM2147E (1)
SMJ4016-20JDM (8)
Free to anybody that can use them. Also have a medium roll of tiny SMD parts from national, had to use a magnifier to see the package markings: <logo> 07AN? X2322? SLBC. free to a good home. I couldn't find a reference to this code. You can have all or some of these parts, as you wish. Might bring something good back to life.

I can have it uploaded to the HPArchive but if you need it quickly, I

That is great news!

Thanks for posting the original. It's much better than nothing, but I'm
really struggling a bit with details.

Thanks so much! I'm also looking for better copies, or paper copies, of
1350A, 1351A, 1347A manuals/docs if there's any chance they exist.

There is no rush at all, but I'd appreciate a note when you get it
uploaded to HPArchive. No need for DropBox, thankyou though.

Ah yes, you are right Steve, they have the sampling sub-harmonic mixers in the probes themselves , thank you!

Re: vector voltmeter

The accessory kit for the 8508A vector voltmeter is compatible with the 8405A probes. Along with various probe tip adapters it also contains replacement probe tips and a miniature nut driver to install those tips.

Re: 9122 and 9122C - HPIB Connected DiskDrives - Scrap or save?

Hi Ulf ,
please dont forget me , my statement that shipping cost would make it impossible for me to buy - I was assuming that you were in the USA when in fact you are somewhat closer . The cost might still put it out of my reach but it does seem a good deal more likely that it could be affordable for me .
I have an HP9826 system and spare parts or additional disk drives are always needed as there is no knowing how long the parts that I have will continue to function?

Re: vector voltmeter

Cut probes would be fine for my application, not a problem at all.? My sampling ports are N type,? providing I can get from my sampling ports into the instrument, how it happes is irrelevant to me, providing it is accurate and repeatable.

As noted earlier the probes on the 8405A are the most often abused part of the instrument.? Either some goon has cut or ripped the cables from the instrument, the cables have been pinched, partially cut or alternately damaged or the ends of the probes and/or tips have been broken.

?

Depending upon your requirements you may have to consider the accessories as well.? Much of the 11570A accessory kit is handy for transmission line measurements.

?

It¡¯s interesting that the ePay site is now showing many 8405As with probes and cables attached.? In the past it was almost synonymous that the units were missing their probes and cables but still being listed at cutthroat prices.? I also see one seller listing replacement probe tips which normally are somewhat rare to find.

Christmas time is always the best time to shop on that site.? Everyone is spending their money on Christmas gifts leaving little for the "special" things.

I have an 8405, which came with working probes whose tips were worn/broken down.

After looking around for a while I tried ordering a set of replacement tips made by ProbeMaster, intended for their oscilloscope probes. Two sizes are available: 4981ST and 4882MT ("standard" and "micro"). The folks at ProbeMaster told me these have a 0-80 UNF thread, but didn't know if they would fit an 8405 probe. They do, and they work. They're not identical to the original tips; the insulating bushing is of a larger diameter and it ends up snugging down against the end of the HP probe barrel rather than sliding inside. I don't think that's an issue as this probe position doesn't (I don't think) require a well-characterized transmission line impedance. The thread is a good match for the probe, and the tips seem well-made and sturdy. At $3.75 each plus shipping, I think they're a very workable alternative to buying new-old-stock HP spares (if you can find 'em) and are more convenient than having to stick an 0-80 screw into a lathe and shave it down to a point. ProbeMaster also makes a BNC adapter, intended to fit over the end of one of their probes and convert it to a BNC male workalike, using the probe tip as the center pin. These, alas, do not fit the 8405 probe - the diameter of the ground ring at the end of the probe is wrong. It might be possible to make some sort of shim, but I haven't done so.

HP 1331A XY - service manual?

Posted this a while back but thought it might be worth asking again.

The online scan is very poor, would love to find a paper copy as I am
trying to restore one of these.

Thanks

Re: Reinstalling operating software for 16702A on scsi2sd

I thought I should close the loop on this. I have the 16702 software now on sd disk and it works well with the scsi2sd v6 installed in my HP16702A. I cloned the sd card with win32 image writer to have a back up. Works.
In case someone else needs the software on sd card for use with a scsi2sd I can get you the .img file that can be written to an empty sd card. I have used a 32GB card, so that is the size of the .img file, so I am not going to post it in the files section....

I can't figure out how to remove the heatsink.

Also, I briefly looked for this mother board on the Internet should I resort to replacing it and the prices are outrageous. Does a similar footprint mother board exist that may be lower cost?

Hi Noel
thanks very much for your help I will have a good look at the p/supply

Re: Hp 8664A

Hello,

I have had issues with an HP8665A and this model which affected the power supply rails.? Both came down to failures of tantalum capacitors in various modules.? The first was easy because there was a visual indication of failure caused by the explosion of the capacitor before it shorted out the supply.? The others I just tracked down as DC shorts on the rails.

It may have nothing to do with your issues but it would pay to check the supply rails and also to let you know that there is a switch you must use to put the unit in service mode but you really need to refer to the manual.

SEE for example the hard copy version and title at??

But I found a pdf on the web.
