Hi Stan, there isn't an enter key, but there is X1. No dice, it is still Jan 1 1970. Tx for the thought tho!

HP 8656A A6 board U1 1020-2933 is bad
?I am repairing a HP 8656A that has an A6 board from an HP 8606B in it.
Chip U1 on board A6 has an HP part number of 1820-2933 and the chip is labeled SP8606B. This chip is bad. Question 1. Is SP8606B the correct part number for the HP part number of 1820-2933? Question 2. I have searched for the? SP8606B chip and can not find one for sale without asking for a quote from the obsolete part vendors. Is there an available substitution part number for this chip? Thank you Richard Hall WB4RSO |

Re: Advantest R3767BH VNA date+time setting
Hi Jesse,
Although I'm not familiar with your particular VNA, I've found with a lot of T&M gear that when setting the date, time, or any other numeric entry, you need to press the Enter key or its equivalent (e.g., Hz, x1, etc.) after you key in the new value. Otherwise, the value will not be updated. Regards, Stan |
Re: HP 53310A - Why did I not know about this sooner?
I did the same several years ago - saw one on eBay, googled it & picked up the Geller Labs stuff, plus pdf manuals & bought it - a bit more than $250 though! Mine has Opt 31 plus all the memory but not the full OCXO, but then I use 10MHz from a Z3801A. It's been really useful for checking out oscillators and measuring frequency to the ppb range.

Does anyone know anything about the counter chip in that device? I looked at the old Win3.1 software that HP created for it (HP53305A), and delving into that it appears that the chip is programmable - the HP53305A software loads a different program that makes it behave differently. I wondered if it would be possible to get it to do phase continuous measurements over long periods but I haven't really got much further without more info on the counter. 73 John G8ONH On 16/04/2020 15:15, Bill E wrote:
Oh, what the heck. Why wait for advice? I just bought one, claims to be tested and working, $250. Hmm. Well, nothing more satisfying than impulse buys of new (old) toys that either work or that I get to fix. |

Re: hp8350b/hp83595a front panel mod
Yeah, I figure an 8510 requires persuasive diplomacy and unplanned presents :-).
Pretty much the same here; set up a HAM lab decades ago. Sub-GHz for many years. Then an hp141t. But things exploded over recent years due to my RF colleague having to reduce "his" lab's footprint twice, internally auctioning dozens of really well-maintained HP units (thanks Peter!). He just couldn't stand the thought of the units ending up as scrap metal, and rightfully so. I must have scored >15 units, including hp70000, hp8566b, 2xhp8350b, hp8663a (wow!). So, right now, I feel obliged to bring them all into glourius shape. But I'm discovering that >SMA && >N may just be out of my league. Still trying to find the high watermark for me though (24 GHz is a HAM band...). Worked with Raytheon quite often actually (MIM-23/MIM-104/NASAMS), though from a procurement perspective. Small world :-). |

Re: CorCom F2080 .1uf capicator replacement
Sounds like another instance of the infamous Wima et al brand paper cap situation, discussed here often. HP used them a lot in that era. They look like rectangular amber clear epoxy bodies - when they're not all burned up. Replace them whenever encountered, with modern "X" caps, which means they are safety rated for across the line use, usually up to 250 VAC. Lots of vendors make them, so there are lots of choices. Just be sure to get the "X" kind - it's marked right on the part.
