Re: Manual needed for HP 415 series SWR Indicator

Hi Mike,

Thanks very much for the information! I did go to the N6GCE site - but didn't find the pages you have sent the link for! And I totally agree with your comments about the LOGSA site - I gave up after a few attempts.

I'll have a look in files area for the service manual - thanks again
DAve, G4HUP

Hi dave, there is a useful article on usage here:-
ites.com/ ~brooke/HP415E. shtml
The service manual is available at the US military LOGSA site, but
this is a notoriously difficult site to navigate.
However, If this is what you need you will find it on this groups
files area.

Thanks,

8410B

I have an HP 8410B Network Analyzer, which does not appear to work as it should. When putting the unit through the troubleshooting stages as suggested in the manual, I find that the amplitute values quoted in figure 8-51, page 8-51 (circuit board A4) are considerably higher compared to what I get. With an input of 30mV at 20.278Mhz at test point 4, I get 225mV at TP3 (not >0.3V) at TP2 I have 800mV (not >3V) and at the output TP1 I have 400mV (not >2V) I discovered that R15, which according to the circuit diagram should be 100 ohm is in fact 454 ohm, which could explain the differences in gain. I borrowed an A4 board from a friend and discovered that his unit too used 454 ohm and performed identically to mine (i.e. only 400mV out at TP1). Further investigation shows that the model # for my 8410 (and that of my friend) is prefixed 2017A. However the manual I have covers prefixes 1902A and 1941A and 1450A and 1741A with changes mentioned in the "manual changes". It would appear that some significant changes were made in later models making the information I have on hand almost useless.
Question: Can anyone help with a manual for prefix 2017A or later?

Cheers,

Chris

Re: HP608D + HP302A manuals

There's a usable 608D scan on BAMA. Have you checked
the Agilent site? They have a number of vintage
manuals archived, and being that the 608 was one of their
longest-running products, I'd be surprised if they
didn't have one for it.

I can't help you with the 302A.

Hi all,

do you know perhaps a source where I could find the HP608D (VHF Signal

Many thanks in advance

Hi,

I have made a search on the Parts Info on the Agilent web site.
Go to and enter your part number
1855-0082. They have it at US$ 3,95 each, including shipping in the
US.
Good luck with your 651B repair!

?Glad to hear you made some progress. Sounds like the replacement YTO was
?too sensitive (degraded phase margin and increase in loop BW due to
increase in overall loop gain), correct? I wonder if the best way to fix
that would be a shunt resistance across the tuning coil. There's a lot to
be said for not altering the loop filter itself, if possible. It has to
work over a rather-wide range of conditions as the analyzer sweeps across
the band.
Thanks for that thought. I can't argue with your logic! I'll try it when I
next summon-up the physical strength to lift the analyser off the shelf where
it lives!

FWIW I did look for a change in loop performance, using the shape of the noise
pedestal across the tuning range of the analyser, and it seemed pretty
consistent at both of the band edges and at its centre. I didn't have the
time or energy to look at the loop using more formal methods...

I was able to spend a couple of hours looking at my venerable 8568B this
weekend.

After running through the adjustments, and sorting-out some minor
alignment
issues with the 50MHz VTO and 249/259 synthesisers, the it became
clear that
the major problem was the tuning sensitivity of the YIG
oscillator. This is a
replacement part (sourced from a redundant 10MHz - 2.5GHz plug-in for an
HP8620, BTW...) This was causing the phase-noise to peak by a few
dB at about
150kHz. I was able to reduce the peak, and move the corner
frequency back to
just below 100kHz by slightly changing the constants of the YTO
loop filter.

I hope that's of use to somebody else.

Incidentally John, KE5FX's phase-noise measurement software was
very useful
indeed in chasing this problem.

(www.agilent.com) Type "4195A" in the Search box.
