Hi Joe,? Have fun at that, it sounds great.

We will be on the ship, hopefully from about 1000 until 1430ish PDT. We will check conditions but probably monitor/CQ on 20 and 40 meters. There is a lighthouse activation in Port Townsend WA we will try to make contact with.

Hi Frank, thanks for the update. I will be calling the Columbia from Prince Edward Island during the ILLW. My call sign will be N7BF/VY2. I'll call using my KX2 as well as the rented QTH's 1500 W. The probability of a KX2 QSO is slim but from the rented house/QTH is very likely at 1500w. Based on the ships main antenna and past experience, what band do you recommend?

Cheers, Joe Kelly N7BF, in Canada N7BF/VY2

W7BU operators,

?I have most of the gear back in the radio room. Gary, Patrick and Aaron from museum maintenance moved a lot of the items from the storage container on the plaza. I will have an inventory completed this week. But...

There is no power in the radio room. The shipyard did quite a bit of work on the electrical system and evidently left us off the list. I tried?all the usual breaker box switches and Gary has been out looking at things. An electrician from the shipyard is scheduled to be here soon. I will keep you posted.

I took my KX3 out and on internal batteries using the main antenna, talked to the Noontime Net Control in Idaho on 5 watts. It is a big relief to know that our go-to antenna is working!!!

I will move the remainder of the gear out this week. Hopefully we will be able to do Lighthouse/Lightship Weekend 8/20 & 21 at full power. An extension cord may be approved for that event.

I will let you know when we can resume operations!!! Right now only the main deck is open to the public. The radio room level is set to open soon.?

Update on Ken and DX Lodge

Ken is doing well. He rates his Covid experience as 4 of 10 using his previous flu episodes.

The new carpet went in today. ?Thinking the power cords for the K3 rigs may have been mislaid during the work, Ken had two new ones sent to me by Elecraft. They arrived today and are in my luggage.

The Alaska PDX-BOS and BOS-PDX flights are doing well…on time or early except once a week. I hope the same will be true for Peter’s flights.

I “might” take a stab at the “Walk for the Bacon, QRP ’test’ (Wednesday 9PM-10PM ADT) if I feel strong and awake. 11 to midnight Thursday is a stretch.
Maybe try the FISTS Sunday sprint but the speed will probably be more than I can handle/copy.

For the ILLW event I will probably just play part time from the field at a lighthouse somewhere. Not sure which one (or two) yet, but probably one on the southern coast. Probably do a swing by to say “Hello" at the VY2PLH event.

For the NAQP I may operate from the field as a QRP station since it runs during the ILLW event.

The other events (Hawaii, Kansas, Ohio QSO Parties and W/VE Islands), who knows. Depends on WX and whether I want power or am happy with QRP.

All the above may be influenced by the desires of the ‘ladies in the house’ as well.

I will have a semi-final list of my kit out shortly.

Well as mentioned before, the only contest that I'm interested in is the Lightship and Lighthouse weekend with a goal of contacting the Lightship Columbia.? I'm an operator on it and home to work the ship from the opposite coast.?

I'm mostly interested in Field ops and satellite communications, assuming that Ev will again try to educate me. ?

This evening I'm laying out my radio gear. Just the KX2 and associated stuff. It presently looks like more that I had imagined. More on that topic later.

Well things change quite quickly don’t they. The general opinion is that Covid is very seldom transferred via surfaces, and doesn’t last long outside a host anyway.

I am still on track to arrive in PEI on Aug 16 at 17.37 (AC 1706 from Toronto. I had a dose of covid about 3 weeks ago but am back to normal now.

I will be following the same convention with VY2 as a suffix.

I am starting to get somewhat excited about this latest adventure but haven’t packed the bags yet.

Several suggestions. We all should pack some 15 minute test kits as well as some KN95 masks.

Each of us will depart in one of two ways. Peter by air, and Ev, Mac, Joe by car. The exit Canada and USA entry requirements should be reviewed. I know that Ev has knowledge of them.?

Lastly we should make a tentative plan on how to address the issues if one of us comes down with the virus. Ken may have a strategy that he will share with us.

Ken tested positive for Covid on Friday (before the contest). Two other hams who were there until Thursday are testing negative. Ken is quarantining at DX Lodge until this Friday, then with negative test will be headed back to LA.

Ken will refund any of us who wish to cancel.? Please let me know by Thursday this week if you decide to cancel. I promised Ken I would be in touch before he leaves on the coming weekend.

Canada recommends testing 4 days after entry as a precaution.? If you have self-tests and bring them…this protocol would assure others in the group. I’m bringing two…one to be used at four days…the second to be used when leaving to drive back to the US.

If I tested positive at the four day post entry point, I would self isolate with you in the house, after 5 day self-isolation, I would continue wearing my N95 through day ten.

If my test at leaving for the US was positive, I would self-isolate for five days…likely not at the DX Lodge.? My flight out of Boston is six days after I leave DX Lodge.

Re: Covid isolation

Self Quarantine at DX Lodge is acceptable if testing positive.

You can leave isolation after 5 full days. If you continue to have no symptoms, you can end isolation after at least 5 days. You should continue to wear a well-fitting mask around others at home and in public until day 10 (day 6 through day 10).

Ev and PEI Team,?

Nancy and I have talked about the situation and we will press on with group.?

Several suggestions. We all should pack some 15 minute test kits as well as some KN95 masks.

Each of us will depart in one of two ways. Peter by air, and Ev, Mac, Joe by car. The exit Canada and USA entry requirements should be reviewed. I know that Ev has knowledge of them.?

Lastly we should make a tentative plan on how to address the issues if one of us comes down with the virus. Ken may have a strategy that he will share with us.

Cheers to all, Joe and Nancy?

Ken K6LA is at the DX Lodge currently. He participated in the IOTA contest this past weekend. He had good conditions.

I am not concerned and will continue my trip plan.? Covid is not passed on surfaces and significant time will have elapsed before our arrival.

And, the adventure continues…

I believe that he was on PEI for two weeks before testing positive?

Where he "got it" was probably on the airplane or in the departure airport (IMHO) if he left on the Tuesday or Wednesday before. They seem to be giving the Omicron strain an incubation period of about 3 days (from infection to symptoms) which is a bit shorter/faster than the original (~5.6 days).
So, unless he was on-island for a week or so, he brought it in himself.

Probably will not affect our travel plans unless Lynn's next med. appt's (tomorrow) cast a shadow things.
