Reply to group keeps including the original message
Is there are setting so that the original message is automatically stripped from the reply? I suspect it might be because some people's email is set up to include original messages and I wont be able to change that so I am hoping groups.io lets me get it automated. Right no I am editing those messages to remove the original and it is not something I want to do.? Thanks again for your help and the reminder to Read the Full Manual.? |
You asked about original message being stripped from the reply.
?
The Help says if using email, it depends on the email application you are using. If are replying to a message on a group's website, you can automatically include all or part of the message (by selecting the text before clicking on reply).
?
Quoting messages you are replying to
Note: This topic covers quoting messages that you are replying to on a group’s website. If you are replying to messages via email, the method for automatically including quoted messages in replies as well as where quoted text is placed (for example, at the top or bottom of the message) depend on the specific email application you are using.
When you are replying to a message on a group’s website, you can automatically include (quote) all or part of that message in your reply.

For what it's worth, bottom-quoted text is stripped from messages that appear in a digest.?
?
Here in GMF, if someone gets carried away, we moderators will often remove an over-quote, substituting a brief message explaining what was done. We hope this serves as a reminder of our expectations (I was going to say it's a "deterrent," but that sounds a little too harsh).

FWIW, I like seeing the full history of the current thread up to the msg that the member is responding to. If you hate it, you can just eliminate the history for responses that you yourself create. Since the latest response appears on top, the history is easily ignored, so I don't see why it's a big deal. The reason I like it is that it supplies context if I have not followed every preceding message.? -P.? On Sun, Mar 23, 2025, 4:18?PM Bruce Bowman via <bowman46118=[email protected]> wrote:

To better understand your situation, I'm curious why you're editing the messages. 开云体育 automatically hides most of the quoted material beyond the post being replied to. What does remain is often useful to the reader when opening the message separately. Since the amount of material in the message archives doesn't count against group space allocations, is this just for appearance in the archives? May I ask what is the reason for not wanting any previous text of the message being replied to? Our groups all have different needs but without a little of the previous message at least the context is lost and in the groups archives its difficult to follow a thread without it So just wondered what your needs were? One person posts a message. Five people reply to it. They may quote the original, but they don't quote each other. You've already lost 67% of the thread.
?
I don't want to overstate this, and acknowledge that it's all but unavoidable. But the fact remains that the only way to see a topic in full context is to read it online.

I do find this odd, purely my own observation over many years of mailing lists, having been a list owner of several under rootsweb and currently under groups.io and having been a subscriber to many more on a variety of subjects, I can almost name the few who bottom post or reply with interspersed comments

Bottom posting is by far the most annoying, interspersed replies are okay once but once that is again replied to it loses any meaning The norm for many years has been to top post leaving just enough of the message you are replying to, to keep the reply in context Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) The most you can do if you are the owner of the group, is to ban TOFU/top-posting and insist that members use the proper "old-fashioned" interspersing-method. |
As I stated, for each response, you can see the?portion?of the thread that they responded to, which usually suffices for understanding the context of what they sent.? Unless you throw away the emails you don't read, you can always go back and read the other emails if you need to, so it's not always the case that you need to go back to the website to read the full history of the discussion. Anyway, I suppose this comes down to personal taste in the end, and I just wanted to point out that some folks like the untrimmed messages. -P. I completely agree with that. I receive hundreds of GIO messages every day, and I try really hard to follow all threads in which I am interested or have to administer, and a good number of the messages have zero context because the message to which the poster is responding has been deleted.
