Massive Bouncing Members Conundrum

G'day,
?
My group lost 1,313 members this morning (AEDT) in one go, almost 31% of our members, through "Bouncing via system".
?
I did a random check of the various members bounced, and they all had on thing in common, which was: Email Delivery set to, "Special Notices Only".
?
Why the apparent sudden purge of this group of members? There was no other commonality I could find between them other than this preference setting.
?
I did check the FAQs on Bouncing but, it doesn't cover this sort of event, and given the large number bounced in one hit, it doesn't make sense.
?
?
NB: When we moved from Yahoo Groups, we went from just under 10K members, to around 6.5K, which we were expecting. Since then, we've lost (probably) close
to two thirds of the remaining membership through Bouncing. It sort of feels like a slow death of many thousand cuts.

Can you explain what you mean by 'lost'? Have they been removed from your group and have you checked the member list and activity log to verify that?? Bouncing members will not be removed from your group just because they are bouncing so they should still be on your member list. However, they will no longer count towards your member total shown on your group home page. Is that what you are looking at?

That won't make a difference. There are members here on GMF who are in a bouncing state and they have their delivery preference set to No Email. Remember that bouncing is an account level state so issues delivering messages from other groups they are subscribed to could affect that.

As I mentioned, bouncing members will not be removed from your group because their account in a bouncing state.

There was no other commonality I could find between them other than this preference setting.
Please check your member list and activity log to verify details.

Andy

I bounced as well overnight.? I am on ‘individual emails’, my email account having space and nothing in Spam.

you can check your account bounces via your account settings at /settings/bounces. You can also check details related to individual groups you are subscribed to via Subscription > Delivery History.? Remember, messages in the Response and Reason columns are what 开云体育 receives from your mail provider.

Sometimes a bounce is temporary, especially at certain times of day when it's not unusual to see "is bouncing via system".? I normally see those around 3:30-4:00 pm Pacific time (PDT).

Hi Andy,
?
Hadn't noticed that before, checked membership list & it says we have 6,171 members, while our group homepage shows 2,978 members.
So, I'm guessing that none of the 3,193 bounced receive anything from the group, and there is no way to ascertain if they're?still bouncing,
if they were bounced some time ago.?
?
Now my question is, do I just delete all of the "bounced" members, as technically they're not actually members anymore?

I believe that Bouncing members can still access the messages via the web based version of the group.? If people were set to Special Messages they may already be in the habit of reading on-line.

There are two stages of bouncing:
?
  • a soft bounce where 开云体育 has had an issue delivering an email but is in the process of retrying and this is denoted by a blue B badge on the member list
  • a hard bounce where 开云体育 has reached the limit if its retries and stopped trying to send messages to a member altogether; denoted by a red B badge on the member list
?
Hovering your mouse pointer over those badges will show a pop-up stating when a particular bouncing state was entered:
?
?
?
?
In addition, you can also view the member record and display the Activity History for that member. The Activity Log will contain entries which show when an account has entered or left a bouncing state. You can see on this example from GMF (read from the bottom up) that a member subscribed and then went through the bouncing stages.? Duane has twice sent a bounce probe to this member but the account is still in a bouncing state:

Bouncing refers to email delivery so there's a chance that those members may still be viewing messages online. I know a bounced member gets a prompt to un-bounce their account when they login to the 开云体育 site but I believe they can still read messages anyway.? Whether you remove them or not comes down to how you wish to operate your group. If you have guidelines that state that hard bouncing members will be removed after a period of time then it would be reasonable to do so.? As in the example above, you could start by sending them a 'bounce probe' to see if it has any effect.
?
You can send multiple bounce probes at one time by filtering the member list by those in a bouncing state, selecting all the members on the list and then selecting Send Bounce Probe from the Actions button:
?
?
As you have lots of bouncing members, I'd recommend that you set your Items per Page to Infinite Scroll in your account preferences at /settings/prefs
?
?
This will allow you to scroll to the bottom of the list before selecting everyone and using the Actions button.? If you use the 开云体育 app, the default is Infinite Scroll on the member list anyway so you would not need to change your preferences.

Keep in mind that bounced members still can access the website for messages if the group is private. They don’t get any email but they still have that access.

?

I don’t know if it is possible to tell if bounced members are using the web access as a way of knowing they shouldn’t be deleted. Also you can always trigger a bounce test for the users.

I'm pretty sure that the date shown for Bouncing accounts is the date the most recent Bounce Probe was sent by the system. I would wait at least until the badge turns Red (Bounced). At this point the system has sent probes every 3 or 4 days for at least 2 weeks. If the group member hasn't responded by this time they are probably no longer interested in being in the group or their address is no longer valid.

I check my groups periodically for bounces and delete those that never respond. It is rare that there are more than a handful at any one time. When we moved over from Yahoo there were quite a few bouncing addresses that ended up being deleted, but since then there have only been a few from time to time.
