Integration with Google Calendar
#calendar
Hi,
I'm a newbie owner and looking at the options of integration. My group has a website that has an embedded google calendar that the public can subscribe to. We are investigating the option to move to Groups.io and part of that we have some questions regarding the groups,io calendar. Can the groups.io calendar be automatically synced with the google calendar or the reverse where the google calendar updates the groups.io calendar? What are the options to embed the groups.io calendar into a website for the public to view events and allow members of the public to subscribe to the calendar and only the calendar so they can integrate it with their mobile device calendars but not have accounts in the group or have any access to anything else as our group is private. Thanks |
Hi,
Can the groups.io calendar be automatically synced with the googleYou can have events from the Groups.io group's calendar import to a Google calendar. At the bottom of the Groups.io calendar page is a blue "Subscribe to Calendar" button. Click that and copy the URL it gives you. Then in the Google calendar click "Add a friend's calendar" and select "From URL". However, I'm not entirely sure that isn't a one-time import. That is, I don't know if Google refreshes by reading that URL periodically, or ever. My brief attempts to test this suggests that Google doesn't re-read the .ics file, even when you click on the logo to refresh the calendar. I don't know if there's a way to have events in the Google calendar update the Groups.io calendar. Related, maybe: What are the options to embed the groups.io calendar into a websiteYou can set the calendar to "Public", even if your group's Messages are private. Which means that you can put a link to it on the website, or with some greater effort maybe use an iFrame to embed it in the other website. ... and allow members of the public to subscribe to the calendar andThe .ics file named by the URL (above) can be accessed without logon to Groups.io. That should allow the public to import your group's events. Shal -- Help: /static/help More Help: /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki Even More Help: Search button at the top of Messages list |

I believe calendar is one way.? However, you can go to Admin > Settings in your group, scroll way down to the Features section, and disable Calendar to remove it from the menu.

I am stuck on this and it is probably something stupid - and it is on the Google end.? So I got the Calendar link from Groups.io - but I can't find "add friend's calendar".? ?There is a link called "add calendar" with a "from url" option so I assume that is it.? It just adds another calendar at the bottom - I could see all events on one calendar view by clicking that box and the calendar I want to integrate, but that is still two calendars.? I want the events from Groups.io calendar - and maybe others - to consolidate on one calendar which I can then reshare or publish on my website.?
Am I thinking about this incorrectly, or doing something wrong? Rob |

I want the events from Groups.io calendar - and maybe others - to consolidate on one calendarIf you click the Groups.io logo towards the top left of your browser window and then select Your Calendar you will see that it is an amalgamation of your main group calendar plus the calendars from any subgroup you belong to. At the bottom of that calendar is a subscribe button. Try using the URL from that to sync to Google or wherever. Andy |
Following my previous suggestion about subscribing to the combined calendar view I've done some testing and found that it does not appear to work properly.
I tried to sync to it using Outlook 2016.? Multiple errors were reported when processing the .ICS file and events from my subgroups were missing, although the events from all main groups I am subscribed to, including GMF, were shown. I've raised this with support (ticket 8862) and will report back with any updates I receive. Andy |
I've been in contact with Mark about the errors I reported and provided additional info for him to work on.? I have identified two distinct issues:
This is now back with Mark and I'll update further when I have some news. Andy |
The issue with newline characters in the ICS file has been fixed (as mentioned in this weeks' changelog on beta).? As well as loading correctly in Outlook, it also now works when syncing to Google Calendar.
Mark believes the issue with 'all day' subgroup events appearing on the wrong (previous) day is time zone related and he will investigate further when he returns from holiday w/c 29-Apr. Regards, Andy |
