Groups.io logos, nomenclature, etc.

One thing I'm struggling with as we migrate...how to cleanly advertise this on our web page and in our newsletter?

The groups.io logo is nondescript at best, and doesn't invite anyone to click on it. In web text and emails, it's very clumsy to repeatedly refer to the migrated group as "our new collaboration site". Calling it "our groups.io group" doesn't exactly roll off the tongue, either.

I'd be interested to hear what others are doing to mitigate this problem.

Yahoo Groups group is no easier than Groups.io groups to me.

True, but in my experience, most people simply say "Our Yahoo group..." :-)

Cheers.

Not exactly what you asked, but see also the Promote section of your group (under Admin) if you haven't.

Calling it "our groups.io group" doesn't exactly roll off the tongue,
either.
Too true.

In a context where you're not contrasting it with a Yahoo Group you could simply shorten it to "group" or "email list" (or just "list"). Or maybe "forum" if you want to emphasize the web presence, even though Groups.io is not a forum system in the normal usage of that word.

I've often seen the usage "our IO Group", to contrast with "our Yahoo Group". I'm not comfortable with that usage because it miscasts IO as the hosting company, where in fact it is merely the top-level domain for the service. On the other hand I don't have a better answer.

I chimed in before because I'm new here and was also pondering the nomenclature, as I think about migrating users.

I see a couple recent threads where people abbreviated this system 'GIO'.?

Maybe try "Our GIO group..." (pronounced 'Geo')?

I moved our neighbourhood group from Yahoo a year ago and I could not be happier. Here is the last message I posted to Yahoo regarding the move. And not a single person had an issue or question.

===========================
As discussed at the Annual Meeting, this group will be moved to a new group provider - groups.io. I am about to start the process now. I haven't done this before so I am not sure how many notifications will go out to everyone.

They will download the member list of the Yahoo Group and directly add everyone the new IvoryHills Groups.io group. They will add all members that are currently confirmed and not bouncing. If you get this email then you are not bouncing. Subscription preferences (email, no email, digest, etc.) will be preserved.

Every new user of Groups.io will also be subscribed to the [email protected] group, to receive updates about the Groups.io service. I have never received a message in 3 months of membership.

In addition to the member list, they will download the existing group messages (but not attachments) and add them to the Groups.io group.

They will send an email to each member when the move has completed.

Email me if you have any questions.

I suspect the nature of my problem still isn't well understood to everyone. That's on me.

Yes, I am responsible for doing the migration from Y@h00. In addition to doing this migration, I am the club webmaster, and I also edit our newsletter. It keeps me out of mischief. :-)

On our web site, and in that publication, there are several boilerplate references to the "Y@h00 Group." I am struggling to come up with a succinct and unambiguous replacement for this two-word phrase. The best suggestion I've heard so far is to call it our "GIO group."?

Thanks again,
Bruce

FWIW, our members have always referred to our neighborhood Yahoo Group as "the listserv". I'm guessing it's a holdover from back in the day when it actually WAS a listserv. And it would normally annoy me, except that's how 99% of our members use it, anyway. Most never login. They just do everything over email. That Groups.io lets them continue doing that ensures the "listserv" will live on. ;-)

But it sounded like your users would actually use it more of a collaboration site, so I didn't mention it before.

Bruce,

I pronounce it GriO ( as in Hi Ho Silver)? or GiO or GO ( Gee Oh, )

In my mind Grio Group or GeeO Group has a good ring to it. GO Group takes it to another level.

I suppose that after the absolutely overwhelming Y branding, marketing and self serving image, that Groups.io is bland and understated. I rather like that Gio is not competing with my sites branding.

OK,
Tony

??

For what it's worth, I've fallen into the habit of eliding Groups.io to Grio. Prefer it to Gio because it can't be confused with a small car I once drove... :)

It has never occurred to me to call it anything but “”. Just not that hard to type.

There is no comparison as far as I'm concerned.
