Gmail apps alias unable to send

My domain is hosted by Google Apps, mostly so I can use gmail. However, along with my name I have a number of aliases which I use for various mailing lists, social media sites, etc.?

My Burning Man group is transitioning to , starting with our organizing committee. I joined our little group using my burning man name. However, I cannot post to the list from that name, because when I'm logged in to my gmail account (mbergen@...) but change the "from" line in Gmail, the header says "mbergen is sending as othername." and will only allow me to post from my mbergen account.

Is this a fixable issue? We want to extend to our much larger group, and I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one who's email is setup this way.

Thanks!?

Michael,

I'm a little confused by your description. You ought to be able to post from the email address which is subscribed to the group.

... because when I'm logged in to my gmail account mbergen but change
the "from" line in Gmail, the header says "mbergen is sending as
othername."
That shouldn't matter, I think, if Gmail is putting your burning man name in as the From that's what should match your group subscription and allow you to post.

and group.io will only allow me to post from my mbergen account.
And that's where I get confused. If you joined under your burning man name Groups.io shouldn't accept mbergen. Well, part of the answer may be the fact that you're posting in this group with that name. Are you sure you didn't join the little group with the mbergan address and not the burning man name?

Anyway, here's how it works:

When you join a Groups.io group you subscribe with a particular email address, and that is the address where group messages are sent. You can also post from that address (subject to the rules of the group, of course).

You can have a second address to post from by entering it as an Email Alias. That's found on the Login page of your Groups.io account. But this alias address is "post only" - group messages are never sent there.

A second option, if you wish to receive group messages at both addresses, is to have a second account and second subscription under that second address.

Hello Shal,

I most certainly subscribed to the list as "littlejack@...", but when I try to mail the list from that address, gmail? send the mail with a From as "mbergen is sending as littlejack". Only if my mbergen@ email address is added to the list may I post to it, even as littlejack@.?

I'm subscribed to this group as mbergen as that's what I intend to use for another group I'm planning? to bring to once I have a more complete understanding of it.?

Thanks for the tip about an alias on the group login page. Let me try that.

Thanks!

No joy. I can't use this email address as an alias for littlejack@ since this email address is already on . I've added this address to our small group, and even when I post from my littlejack@ address, it shows on the list as having been sent from mbergen@.
?
I'm now starting to think that this is an issue with how gmail is handling sending from an alias.
?
Just to test, I'm going to send my next email to this group from my littlejack@ account, which should not go through.
?

Sending this as littlejack@..., which should cause this email message to bounce, since I'm subscribed to this group as mbergen@....

Michael,

LOL. Looks like the alias worked as expected. From this end it looks just as if you'd sent the message from mbergen - which is correct behavior for an alias, no one else should be aware that you used it instead of your subscription address.

since I'm subscribed to this group as mbergen@....

Yes you are. And only by that name (no second subscription under littlejack).

Ah, but it didn't work as expected. I did not set an alias for littlejack on , it's an alias in Gmail. Gmail should send the mail as having come from littlejack@... so the expectation is that it would have bounced. However, gmail must be sending it as coming from mbergen or else it wouldn't have been accepted to this group.

So it sounds like the issue is Google. I'll work on that next.

Thanks for all of your help troubleshooting! :)

Oh... Interesting.

I've successfully used Gmail's Send mail as feature to send mail as the -owner address of one of my Yahoo groups. And I know that comes out right because I generally cc the messages to the -owner address as well.

Maybe it works differently (or, doesn't work) if you are trying to "spoof" another Gmail address. But then they ought to tell you that when you try to set it up, or at worst when you try to use it. I know back when I had Verizon as my ISP email they wouldn't let me send mail as another Verizon address, but they were perfectly fine with letting me spoof a group's -owner address or any address that wasn't .

No problem. It has been interesting. I wonder what you'll find.
